Accident Summary:
On the evening of 24 August 1968, aircraft UH-1B, 64-13957, departed Camp Evans, RVN on a last light reconnaissance mission. The helicopter proceeded from Camp Evans RVN generally to the south, turned left and flew parallel to highway 1 on a heading of northwest. An abnormal vibration was felt in the aircraft and the aircraft commander elected to make a precautionary landing immediately. An approach was set up to a clear area 1 mile northwest of Camp Evans. On terminating the approach, directional control was lost at an approximate altitude of 10 feet and the helicopter entered an uncontrollable right turn. The aircraft commander closed the throttle and landed the aircraft. On touchdown the helicopter sustained major damage to the landing gear, the landing gear attaching points and belly of the helicopter. None of the four crew members were injured

Accident Summary:
CPT. HEWITT WAS AT THE CONTROLS WHEN THE 90 GEARBOX SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED OVER INTO AN EXTREME NOSE LOW ATTITUDE AND A SPIN TO THE RIGHT. CPT HEWITT, IN AN EFFORT TO CONTROL THE SPIN, REDUCED POWER AND RPM. THIS HAD VERY LITTLE EFFECT SO AUTOROTATION WAS ENTERED, AND ENGINE RPM MAINTAINED AT 5800 TO 6000 RPM. AS THE AIRCRAFT APPROACHED THE GROUND, CPT. HEWITT WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE AIRCRAFT DOWN TO 10 OR 15 KNOTS. ABOUT 20 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, HE SLOWLY PULLED IN PITCH TO CUSHION IMPACT. THE AIRCRAFT MADE INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE GROUND IN A NOSE LOW ATTITUDE MOVING BACKWARDS. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED ONCE AND CAME TO REST ABOUT 10 FEET FROM WHERE IT FIRST HIT THE GROUND.\\
