Halloween 1967 found PFC William "Billy" Bones in the 1st Brigade LRRPs of the 101st Airborne, in Vietnam's A Shau Valley with the rest of his 6 man LRRP team. Now the A Shau Valley is about the scariest place in all of 'Nam because Charlie completely owns the place, it's his backyard. As afternoon was coming to an end, the LRRP team decided to spring an ambush before they were extracted. Thus they had set up along a trail and were silently waiting when four NVA regulars, in new uniforms, came diddly-bopping down the trail with slung arms. These four looked just like they were out for a stroll in downtown Hanoi.

TRICK-or-TREAT! The blast of claymores and the roar of M-16s took all four of Charlie down. Billy had his own problems that day because his M-16 had jammed yet again, and he was trying to clear the malfunction as his team searched the NVA for documents. Suddenly the unmistakable sound of an AK-47 on full auto sent the team diving off of the trail. Thinking quickly, Billy grabbed a new SKS and a bandoleer of ammo of one of the dead bodies and ran with the rest of the team uphill towards the extraction LZ.

Weighed down by the useless M-16, Billy placed it beside the trail with a grenade with a no-delay fuze under it. A minute later a satisfying BOOM! told Billy that the M-16 had finally done some good.

With the NVA hot on their trail, Billy elected to stay behind at a narrow place in a ravine where he would have a good field of fire, and slow down the pursuers. Firing accurate, controlled shots with the SKS, he managed to down several gooks and bought precious time for his team as the NVA rallied. Billy took off again, but stopped two more times on the run to the LZ to engage the enemy...

Billy's teammates heard the desperate battle behind them as they reached the LZ, and waited for Billy. Out of the smoke and fog of the jungle battle, Billy finally emerged and was pulled aboard the Huey as they made a hot extraction. Some teammates swore that Billy was much too light as they hauled him into the helicopter. He was deathly pale and covered with blood, still clinging to the SKS that saved them all.

He would never tell his teammates what happened in the dire struggle that took place back in the jungle, or exactly how he came out alive with what seemed like half the North Vietnamese Army shooting at him.

When Billy went back to the 'World' he took the SKS with him as a memento. He liked the heft of it, not to mention its accuracy and reliability. It was a rifle that had saved his life! Years later, Billy's nephew, who was into guns and SKSs in particular, told Billy that he learned from Survivors SKS forum on the Internet that Billy's ChiCom SKS was made in 1958.

Years went by, some good, others bad. Billy's wife had left him, and he was living in the old family ranch house up the canyon above his home town in the West. Hard times had made Billy sell much of what was precious to him, including his Super Grade Model 70 .270 Winchester, but he still had the SKS and a Smith & Wesson Model 19 .357 'Combat Magnum' revolver. There was often an aching in his heart, and he wondered why he had been spared in 'Nam when so many of his friends hadn't.

Lately Billy had run into other problems. It seems that he had discovered a meth lab being ran out of an old trailer, on some public land near his property. Billy turned this info in to a shooting buddy, and ex-Desert Storm Ranger, who was with the county Sheriffs Dept. A raid by the SWAT team had ended that source of pollution, but the biker gang who ran the lab had been hassling him lately and things were getting very ugly!

On this particular Halloween evening, Billy had just sat down to a lonely supper when he was disturbed by the roar of motorcycles in his front yard. Billy got that old "combat" feeling, and grabbed the Model 19 as he opened the door a crack to look outside.

The leader of the biker/doper gang, in a flurry of obscenities told Billy they had come to give Billy "his due." This outburst was punctuated by the blast of a shotgun, splintering a big hole in the front door.

Billy took a couple of hasty shots with the revolver. The first shot ricocheted off a Harley, but the next hit the leader in the shoulder. This was followed by a fusilade of bullets striking the house, fired by the surprised gang in return. The situation obviously was tactically untenable, so Billy ran to the back bedroom and grabbed the SKS and a bandoleer of ammo hanging from a peg. He then jumped out of the window and sprinted across the back yard and up the mountainside. The angry buzzing of bullets going by his head told him that he had been spotted, so Billy turned around and fired 5 or 6 rounds to suppress the fire. This allowed Billy to make the cover of a rock outcropping.

Billy saw smoke billowing from the house as the gang members advanced toward him. He took center aim at a guy carrying a sawed-off shotgun, and carefully pulling the trigger, and sent a Russian bullet toward the bad guy. The hollow point dropped the guy like a rock! Billy next lined up on a guy firing at him with a Mini-14. Once again, a double-tap from the SKS sent the dude to Valhalla.

When you are out-numbered and out-gunned, movement is the best tactical survival possibliity, so Billy ran further up the hill to prevent being flanked, stopping now and again to fire at the bikers. Fire, reload, fire. He ran 'til he thought his lungs would burst and his legs felt like they were on fire and made of lead too! Not as young as when he was doing this in 'Nam, he decided!

A burning pain in his left side told him that he had been hit. One of the bad guys had a lucky hit when he sprayed the area with his 9mm Tec-9. Billy stopped behind a Juniper tree and fired a couple of rounds at the man, hitting him in the face. Billy quickly reloaded with a stripper clip and continued the fight. The SKS was hot in his hands. He could smell the hot steel and oil of the gun. Still, it fired every time, sending 122 grains of death to his enemies.

The fight raged on and on. Pale and bloody, Billy wondered if he was getting delirious because the leather-clad dopers were starting to look like khaki-uniformed NVA. Past and Present had melted together...

Later that night, when a couple of shot-up low-lifes checked into the local ER, the Sheriffs Department began to investigate rumors of a big fight up in the hills. The morning of Nov. 1st found them standing in front of the smoking remains of the ranch house. Empty cases littered the area. Among them were steel-cased 7.62x39mm. Dead bodies and blood trails scattered up the hillside spoke of a desperate battle. Still, no sign was ever found of Billy Bones or his SKS.

Some say that he finally joined his comrades in the 101st who never made it back from 'Nam. Other locals say that if you go up the canyon to the remains of an old burned ranch house on Halloween night and listen closely, you can hear the sounds of distant ghostly yells. And sometimes, just maybe, you can hear the distinct "boom" of an SKS, although most will tell you its just thunder...

a letter to us all from else where.................Dear Vietnam Veteran, I know I should have written much sooner. I can't say why I did not. Out of fear of admitting to myself you were there fighting a war. Or maybe ashamed; ashamed that I never accepted the things you felt you had to do. Whatever it is, I know it must hurt. Believe me when I say it hurts me more. I have the burden of your hurt plus that of my own; the pain of not being able to show my true feeling toward you. I am not writing this for the months you served in Vietnam, but for the many years, you were left alone with only your brother Veterans. You served proudly and it went unmentioned. For a long time, I've wanted to express the words. The words an honorable Veteran needs to hear. For a long time, I've wanted to hold you during your times of pain. God knows I wanted to. And only He knows why I never found the courage. I do not remember what I used to say; maybe I do not want to remember. All I know is I hope that it is not too late to give you those things now. For years, you tried to be part of my world. Doing everything to please me, just to be noticed and given a little time and understanding. I look back and see the demands I placed on your shoulders when you were young. "Fight your weakness, and always show strength to others around you." Who was I to make such a demand? I sit here with tears in my heart, finally admitting to myself the one weakness you must have seen in me and never questioned. My inability to say the words that I know would have meant so much to you. "Welcome Home." You served your country honorably. Please hear these words now, from my heart. Please give me a chance to be part of your world now. The world I should have been part of long ago. Love, America

Judy, the only thing you can do is follow your heart. As you all know , i have spent many years dealing with this exact type of situation. I have seen MANY die & it has been very hard. Tom has to have at least some want-to or it will never work, my suggestion is as long as he can hold on to some hope for change, do what you can. Be prepared for the worst, hope for the best. Watch your own emotions & do not go down with the ship. My undying respect for your love & work,>>> Jim

I'm getting emails bounced back also(Jim O., Stacey, Cobra). If you change your email addy, please let us know. I sent information on a decent seafood restaurant chain that is offering a free meal to Veterans on Veterans Day, and several bounced back. If you might be interested, let me know and I'll post it here. Fred, thank you for inquiring about Tom. Joe and I did an intervention Sunday evening(he would have died, had we not), took him to the VA, and he was released yesterday. He has not contacted anyone, but we know he is with his girlfriend who will again lead him down the path of self-destruction. We're very worried, and along with several other people, have suggested that he go to a particular VA up north that will treat him for PTSD(part of his problem) while he attends AA meetings. If he does not, there may not be anything else we can do but leave him to travel his path without us. The little time and energy that Joe and I have, would be better spent on Veterans who are trying to help themselves. And although Tom has been a loved friend, and it breaks our hearts, the friendship may soon be over. I hope that doesn't sound cold, and that you don't mis-understand it. If you guys and ladies want to offer input, suggestions, advice...I'm open to it. We love Tom...but. Keith-no photos. What were they of? Dan H.!!! Bruce Crandell, the "Snake." Wow, did you meet a hero in the true sense of the word. Is he doing OK? And to our California friends-the magnitude of what is happening in your state is difficult to comprehend. Be safe, do not be foolish, and help those you can,if you can. Alex---now I'm off to unpack boxes, I envy your having that over with: my new address is Judith Singer, 7221 W. BLuemound Road, Milwaukee, WI, 53213-3634. The phone is 414-322-2160. You should all feel free to call and write----and send many, many checks for the Christmas fund. BTW-thanks Kal. For our Memorial Service after the Veterans Day Parade this year, I'm having ex-POW(Vietnam) Don Heiliger brought in by helicopter to participate in our POW-MIA Missing Man Table Ceremony, and lay a wreath in remembrance of our fallen and missing friends and brothers. I feel so honored that the words to explain my feelings are unobtainable. Phew! What a roller coaster this year had been...but his attendance will make the entire year worthwhile. "Nuff said. I saw that someone was asking how to attach their tail rotor chain bracelet so it can be removed. I recall using .42 stainless steel safety wire bent around so that it could come off in case of a very hard tug or a simple straightening out with pliers or a screw driver. I never did have problems wearing it. I only took it off once. That was the last time I wore it back in the '70's. I met someone last night that some of you might know, Bruce Crandall. He was the pilot depicted in the movie "We Were Soldiers". An interesting guy and down to earth. It was great to be able to talk to him. One of the people that works with me is realated to him. We plan on getting together again. This time I will bring my copy of the book "We were Soldiers" and have him sign his photo. He is a true hero. For all our friends in Southern California, hope you have enough marshmallows to go with that camp fire. 2,600 homes and 20 people gone and the count still climbing! What a mess. Keep cool and calm down there.

Man oh man, the fire around here is really spooky! The ash falls so heavily that sometimes it looks like snow flurries. Fortunatly I live in the middle of town and the fire appears to be finally headed in another direction. Unfortunatly there's a bunch more folks in the line of travel. We've had all entrances and exits blocked for about 24 hrs. but I think the west of the freeway might be open now. Jeeez, between the grocery strike, the Metro Transport Strike, and the fires, all we need now is an earthquake. What makes things even more complicated is that come winter and the rains, it'll be time for mudslides 'cause all the vegetation is gone. Woo hoo, I think I'll grab the marshmallows and head out to the hills!

Menigitis can be either acute aseptic usually resulting from a viral infection or acute meningococcal which is usually caused by some form of gram-negative cocci. The second form does have a symptom of intense headache as well as many others and can be very serious. Let us all pray it is not this type and Ray's daughter has a complete and speedy recovery.

Dave-very cool on the patch! Thanks for the heads up! Flight, we have't heard from Ray lately because his daughter Kris(who has been on the site) has been in the hospital for serous migrain headaches. Ray just emailed me that she has been diagonosed with a form on meningitis(Agent Orange? Anyone know?). Keep his family in your prayers, as we do for our other dear friends who have posted with illnesses. I'm sure this stress over the last week has set Ray back...so a line of support to him would help ground him. And for those of you who met my friend Tom(Marine, Vietnam 71-72) at Kokomo-he's relapsed. Joe and I, and another friend, did an intervention last night and took him to the VA for detox. He may have died had we not. He is struggling very hard with his addiction and making bad choices at every turn in the road-please pray for him also. Such a world:>( Love to all of you-every day is precious-let people know you love them, it may be the last time you see them. Saddened, but with hope, for all-Gently

Rick. Get the drug store to order you a product called cigarrest. Spelling might be wrong. Two different types. One is a gum the other is 21 tiny pills to be taken 3 times a day for 7 days. Get the one with the pills. Read the WHOLE book and follow direction EXACTLY TO A TEE. 23 years of smoking gone in 7 days and not one craving after the seven days. Good luck.

Hello My Brothers, Time for a little Christian Joke!!! The atheist and the bear An atheist was taking a walk through the woods, admiring all that the "accident of evolution" had created. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him. He ran even faster, so scared that tears were coming to his eyes. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer. His heart was pumping frantically and he tried to run even faster. He tripped and fell to the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw the bear, right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the atheist cried out "Oh my God!...." Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. Even the river stopped moving. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky: "You deny my existence for all of these years; teach others I don't exist; and, even credit creation to a cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?" The atheist looked directly into the light: "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask You to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps could you make the bear a Christian?" "Very well," the voice said. The light went out. The river ran again. And the sounds of the forest resumed. And then the bear dropped its right paw ........ brought both paws together.... bowed its head and spoke: "Lord, for this food which I am about to receive, I am truly thankful. God Blessing to you ALL!! Brother Joe

Good to hear from you Frenchie. I sure will let you know when hopefully I will fink out sonething new. I did read that from Carlin. Good advice that is Carlin's style the way he wrote it. There two kinds of people coaches and players we need to be both. That way we can help each other out and help our selves out. I am guilty of that. All we can do is try.********* Jim O. Watsup.. Rick I just got back from Fl. for Biketoberfest. WHAT A HOOT... The wife may have back surgery. Please let me know when it might be, I would love to be there. Road Trip... Kool. Jim I have a very bad case of CRS which Address was that? Great that you are flying high. A Best friend of mine sent me the Carlin Thing I hope you like it. Bill (His wife recently died...) Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - gross and mouthy comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent ... and so very appropriate post 9-11. A wonderful Message by George Carlin: The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete. Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever. Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side. Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent. Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you. Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again. Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her. 2. Keep only cheerful friends.. The grouches pull you down. 3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. " An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's. 4. Enjoy the simple things. 5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive. 7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is. 10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. If you don't send this to at least 8 people.... who cares? -George Carlin

Not that hard to stop the SPAM. Webmaster or someone with Admin rights, right click, view source, edit source, delete SPAM, File, Save, Exit. SPAM gone. Five minutes a day.

And put a SPAM filter on the web engine. There are several. If it is a question of money, I am sure the folks would be happy to throw a little into the pot.

Some of this SPAM gets pretty raw and is really not appropriate for kids and those coming here for educational purposes and the rest of us don’t need it either.

The real problem though is that it does nothing to honor the memory of those who will remain forever young.

My $.02 worth.

Bidders!!! I'm getting inquiries through my email about "secret" bidding, so I guess I have to change our closing time policy and paint a better picture for you. The reason I allowed secret bidding in the first place was in the event the bracelet was to be given as a Christmas, birthday, whatever gift. I certainly didn't want to get in the way of a cool surprise like that, and I'm sure you wouldn't want to either. I don't want anyone getting excited yet...no one has stepped up with a secret bid..but it could happen. So here's what we'll do: the highest bid at 4PM on 11/10 will receive the bracelet, whether the bid was made on the web or through my email address(The time had to be changed because because I'm leaving 4:30 on Monday and taking Veterans Day off to honor you, and our fallen brothers and friends). But from 3:30 to 4:00 I will keep posting any secret bids. This will afford(no pun)the rest of you a fair chance to continue in the bidding. I will announce the highest bidder and amount,if this person wants the name mentioned, as soon as I am able after 4PM. The secret bidders will have to keep an eye on the web site bidding to stay in the game. If you have a better idea, I'm open for it. The main thing is that I keep the names of bidders to my email, confidential, ....the bid itself will be shared. Yes, Don, you've got me in over my head on this one. I pray there are won't be any problems to Don's beautiful gesture, and that everyone trusts that I'm being honest and fair. Geez............With smiles-Gently

Well it's 8:45 AM here, and my eyes have welled-up to the point I may have to put some Preparation H on the bags beneath them. Fred, my gentle giant, what beautiful words and heart-felt feelings you presented to us today. The 129th is here for you, and we are warmed by the fact that you know that and shared with us what may be a turning point, or at least some closure. You have proven to everyone on this site that there is a very strong brotherhood here, and that the deepest of emotions can be shared, understood, and responded to with the greatest of love. This wonderful group of soldiers and supporters is here for exactly those reason. Thank you for reminding us that this is a healing place, where pain and concerns can be shared, safely. I know you feel the warmth we are giving you today. I've known you for a couple of years now, Fred, and you have become a much loved friend. Our friendship is strong because of the type of man you are. My arms are wrapped around you today, and my heart covers yours. We are with you-Gently

Fred hang in there!! I know alot of emotion pouring through you right now. The memories will always be there. But, I found it easier after the Charlotte reunion. All us 129th Brothers sharing our haunting memories. I found out for the first time since 1968 that I could shed those tears. I still always wondered why I came home!! And the rest of our Brothers didn't. But, my Brotheer Fred were all beside you, and always will. It's tough but, you will make it though this!! Rick glad to here the Iron Butterfly is coming along. Knowing your wetting your pants for it to be flyable!! HA! Ha! Ray was good talking to you on Sunday and you and Gail are doing ok!! Don Miller great idea on the tail rotor chain. But, I hope all of you Brothers and Sisters donate to the Christmas fund. Whatever you can donate will greatly be appreciate, And thanks to our Sister Gently for heading this project. She did a great job last year. As matter of fact everyone did with there donations. Thank you all!! let's have another banner year. LZ Indy!! the 129th has grown every year in attendence. Brothers and Sisters of the 129th! I plan on making Indy 2004 reunion and the Bite % Striles of the 129th will be there in record numbers. The Dark Horse of the cav. got the word out and they had 237 members show up. And I know if we all work hard we can fill up one of the huge meeting rooms. And we will. Will keep everyone informed on the exact dates. As I stated we are moving so I will be bown for a week or so. But,inclosing I would like to thank my wife Liz and all the wives and women in our lives of our unmarried Brothers as of yet( Gale ) for the support and understanding they given through the year. As a VHCMA President I Have seen the devotion spouses have given to our seriously ill Brothers. Brothers and Sisters a 24/7 job. But they they do this not caring about thier own self. But, for that veteran on his last flight. Words can express the honor and respect I have for OUR!!!!!!! Wives and Ladies in our live. They walk beside us all the way!! Just as we walked together in Vietnam. A huge Thank You to all you Ladies of the 129th and whom are with all or Veterans and military today!! THANKS!!! Alex 129th 65-68 Always A Brother

Its been a long lonely journy, barren ofmuch except dreams and impossable hopes. Its been a wandering path, hilly at times, foggy at others. As most of you know,I have been searching fot the familys of my 2 kia room mates from the 60th ahc.I recieved a letter today from daytona beach, from someone i didnt know. Inside was a letter from David Stovers Mom,one of the fellas we saluted in kokomo at the fallen brothers prayer. Seems her grandson went into the Vertiual wall site and downloaded my comments. It was wonderful when i relized whom that letter was from. With tears in my eyes, the sun has finally shown into a few of those dark corners on that damed path.I have put the letter away, to read again and again in private innerself moments.31 years,5 months and 27 days have passed. Will this path lead to closure? I hope so. Lots of feeling swirling around, cant make sense of them yet,but i am smiling. Those of you who have a path like mine, there is hope after all.Talk to you, my brothers, later.(and sisters)

Evening Flight, WOW what did I start here ? I thought it would raise a couple bucks for the fund but I never thought it would do anything like this. Rick it is just a bracelet not a whole chain. I wish it was ..... I'd have a gold mine LOL. I am trying to find some more chain but at this point I am having no luck at all. I sent Gently pic's of it so she knows what it looks like. I will post the pic's on my web site and put the URL in here for all to see. so you aren't bidding on a "pig in a poke". for those that asked if you click on my name below it will take you to my web site for the 129th MIA/KIA's. it is a work in progress so hopefully it will get better as time goes by. Don Miller--I have just visited your beautifully up-dated web site. You put a lot of love and labor into it as is evidenced by the variety of information located on it and linked from it. It saddened my heart to read about your nephew, and I was saddened even further to see that we still do not have a photo for all of our 129 POW/MIA/KIA's posted on your site. If anyone has old photos of our friends and brothers-please get them to Don. On the otherhand, I did see more than the last time I checked. And Katherine, our Mr. Shanley now has a photo there. Don, you should be very proud of your heartfelt and loving site and thank you for acknowledging this web site on yours, and for posting the note pertaining to the 129th. You are doing some very healing work for all of us. Thank you Don. Gently ($75---let's go!)

Checked my calendar this morning and it says "Columbus Day Honor Veterans! Fly the flag!" (Even though it is observed tomorrow.) It reminded me that Jim and I stopped by the Highground outside of Neillsville WI a couple weeks ago. It was the first time we had stopped that the gift shop was open. The volunteer working there saw Jim looking at things that said "VietNam Veteran". She asked if he was a vet and he said "yes". She shook his hand and said "Thank you for serving! Welcome home!" Later on the manager of the shop stopped us. He came up to Jim and shook his hand and said "Thank you for serving! Welcome home!" and he turned to me and said "thank you for taking good care of him". Even now remembering that brings on the tears. It was so affirming. I thought in light of what the calendar said, I'd share our experience.....in honor of all you Vets!

I just got an email and some photos from one of the crew members of the Air Force Husky chopper that rescued some of us (including me) after Bulldog-868 was shot down! He found our web site while doing an internet search, trying to identify one of our ships from a picture (Cobra-725) and find out what the armament on it was. The picture was taken in June or July of '66, at Phan Rang. Great picture, and if anyone knows who was crewing the ship then, let me know and I'll send a copy. He also verified that it was Phan Rang where we dropped our stuff so we could go on the emergency mission, and apparently where I was taken to the field hospital after being rescued. (The story of "The Death of 868" is on our Stories page at: http://www.129th.net/stories/868.html I'll have to update the story, as 'Cong Son' needs to be replaced with 'Phan Rang.') Very exciting to hear from someone who was there after all this time! Bite and Strike!

Randy, Alex can tell u all that stuff or u can go to vhcma (vietnam helicopter crewmen assc).I think its in june, not real sure. was at work a few days ago and had a customer ask who I flew with ( had on the 129th hat). Seems this fellow was a hook jockey over there.228th maybe? anyway, we got to talking about the reunions as he had ben to a few of the pilots (vhpa). I ask him y they didnt have their reunions with vhcma. He didnt know but said he would love to see some the people that crewed with him as a pilot.I invited him to the vhmca reunion but dont think he will go. I agreed with him when he said we ned to do something cause helicopter people are disappearing fast.He had the same story as many of us have...a few bad relationships, bouts of drinking ect.I guess that took its toll on our brethren in many different ways.( I for one am lucky to have survived or no prison terms.)I guess the point I am trying to make is tht one never knows when a brethren is near and the only way is to wear a hat or shirt or something.Didnt someone in here see a bumper sticker(129th) at a gas station and find a unit member? hey Dave Powers, u have snow yet?

FRED ALVIS!!!! Pickin on poor ole Rush....Now ESPN knew what they were getting when they hired him, it wasn`t a "pig-in-the-poke" type deal....ESPN knew he would bring ratings up...and he did!!!!! But my problem is, Rush and his "drug problem"...HARD DRUGS!!!!! He`s never been a advocate of rehab or education, paid for by taxpayer`s money....of course if they would legalize "pot"..the taxes they could charge for that alone would go a long way at cleaning up "OUR" budget deficit. But big drug companies is not gonna let that happen...always amazes me that what drug you take for a illness has some sort of nasty side effect...but I`ll leave that alone. Back to Brother Rush, I`d like to see him do a little time for his use of drugs....not federal time...state time!!! Amongst the inmate population....Put a little lipstick on Rush....OOOOO baby!!! SQUEAL PIGGY!!!!! But it will never happen...he`s got money and you don`t go to jail if you have money.

Geez...what a pain getting through all that SPAM!!! Jim W:>))), and others seeking information, the idea behind the Christmas Fund is that we, 129ers and your supporters, collect monies to help one of our 129ers get to the re-union. If we know of a situation where the money would be more meaningful, such as, needing help with rent, car, food, medicine, etc., then we would help in that way. It is given to whomever is selected by Alex, Mark, myself, based on suggestions recieved from all of you via emails to me( I take phone calls at 414-607-0527). I will converse with Mark and Alex periodically throughout the "Giving Season," with the suggestions you make. Last night I recieved a check for $100 for the Christmas Fund, and you all know the darling who sent it(kiss, kiss), you're just not going to know his(their)name. YIKES $100!!! Not being named is also part of it. No one knows who gives what(except me, and I don't tell)... it keeps those plentiful fives and tens comming in:>)) I also recieved $30 at the time of my fathers death for the fund(thank you soldier...my friend), so now we have $130! Not bad...not bad. We need suggestions as to who could use our help, and, of course, we need your money:>))) Please, please, do not hesitate to ask for help for yourself...no one knows better what you need. Don't go without help, or not join us a the re-union, because of pride. You must know and trust that this is a very confidential and loving project. If I remember correctly, last year we collected $600+, and it got a 129er and his wife to the re-union----very cool! And, to this day, very few know who they are. I bet we could help a little more this year..so lets dig a little deeper....these are your brothers, and our friends....in need. Gently

please click on the bottom ady and try it for 30 seconds..wowAs you know, September is National Eye Care month. Do yourself a favor and take this simple vision test - an early test for cataracts - simple to do and it's actually fun to take!! Remember, cataracts know no age boundary; young and old can have this "preventable" eye disease. When you've finished, send this on to those you care about! http://home.mn.rr.com/t1camp1/Focus.swf

Big mouth ,let me twist the facts or leave some out, Rush finally got exposed for the hypocrit he is. I have leaning toward the right( came with age I guess) , but that man talked a good game until one started to listen to one sided facts. As far as Arnie , out in kalifornia goes, jeeze, that was a different time. Doesnt excuse anything, but sure glad my past isnt plastered on the front pages. We all mature (hopefully). He doesnt seem to be the skirt chaser clinton is. I am neither for or against him, just an amused by stander. Fred Alvis, please keep your pants on & I will make Indy. I keep looking at the big map here & Indiana & Wyoming remain stubborn & refuse to get closer together.Have a long Road Trip in the planning stages for then on The Harley & may need help from a few of you as far as a place to crash. They had an official ceremony for me & i am retired on medical disability. Would gladly return to work if they would take all these diseases from me. Gently, send me a separate e-mail on what you have in mind OK? As far as the Grass, I was always taught it should be used before it gets to old as a person can always get more---( but remember, i never inhaled) Love & respects, Smitty

If I utilized all the penis enlargement procedures I could save on my water bill by just urinating in the people across the street toilet. Jeez I am tired of this stuff! You know we have a saying in the medical arena "It used to be your pride and joy-now its just your water boy"! Maybe that is the proper diagnosis of all these guys pushing penis enlargement.

I've also been enjoying "The Blues", although haven't caught them all. I liked Clint Eastwood's interaction with Ray Charles, and also the Electric Mud segment. Welcome Randy, Hope that you are feeling better & plan on taking part in some of our "intelligent" conversations. Also hope you can make LZ Indy next year. Flight, beautiful weather here in Indiana today & hopefully the next few weeks. Newport,Ind.(10 mi. no of here)just had their annual "antique car hill climb competition" and monster car show. Really had some great restored & custom cars this year.I'm sure some of you have heard of it....as well as the "Covered bridge festival" in this area that's about to begin in a few days and go for 9 days. I see that we still have'nt heard from Mark....has anyone talked to him lately? Well, I better get out and mow my yard for about the last time. We've had a couple of frosts amd that slows the growth way down. Later, Gale

Gale...Can`t believe that...I listen to the same radio station when I was young and being raised at my grandparents farm in Kentucky. John R. was the DJ`s name, sometimes the records would "skip" because they were so old, and you could hear the popping of the records. For years I thought John R. was a black fellow, only to find out years later he was white. My grandma would tell me I was listening to the "devils music" at night....LOL..By the way Gale, my grandpa had a 1951 Chevy Pick-Up truck with the "three-on-the tree" and the wood bed. That`s what I learn to drive drive on.I really enjoyed last nights Blues program...Jeff Beck, Tom Jones, Van Morrison and those session players. And it worked....amazing stuff. I really liked how the "young rappers" and The Electric Mud Band put it all together on thursday night. Rick England you remember how we talked about J.B. Lenoir, he was doing songs like "Viet-Nam Blues" in 1965!!!!! Way ahead of his time. Well I`m gonna throw on some McKinley Morganfield(Muddy Waters) cd and get my groove on.....

Don, glad to hear that you are being treated so well by all. Everyone at the VA Hospital is great. Like they're wearing "kid gloves". The "DAV" does represent me (so to speak) on my claims, but, when I speak with him on the phone....it's just like I'm speaking to the VA big whigs. He shows no concern, compassion or willingness to help. It's like he's reading from the same script as those jerks. Maybe it's just Indy. Fred, I watched some of them blues.........great stuff. Reminds me of my teens. I used get home & sit in my car with the Nashville radio station (can't remember the call letters) on for a couple hours. It actually came from Gallatin, Tenn. I do recall that they advertised "white rose petroleum jelly". Of course, the battery in my 51 Ford would be dead the next morning. Clear, Gale

Evening flight, just thought I would put my 2 cents in here. I went to Phoenix monday morning to file my V.A. claim. I went to the D.A.V. to file instead of the V.A. as I've been told they ARE the ones to help you out. well it went something like this: I sign in and don't even get to sit down before I am called. asked a few questions and given a paper to fill out. take the paper back and the guy asks if I want to just turn in the paper or do I want to talk to someone. I want to talk. "OK SIR please have a seat and you will be called". ( at this point I am glad there is a good movie on the TV to watch so I don't get too bored ) I sit down and don't even have time to break the chill off the chair and my name is called. so in less than 15 min. I am talking to a caseworker. I couldn't believe it. sure it was early in the morning but there were about 6 guys in there at the same time as me. but the DAV workers made me feel like I was the only person they had to help that day and they were not going to let me get bored waiting around. on a personal note Rick, sorry I missed you, it would have been great to see you again. and Fred A. I still haven't heard from Bill Jarvis, I'll try again next week. take care all and have a great week-end, Later, Don

Dave Powers....the digital camera picture of the bull is funny. That`s on the cover of a book. Ernest Hemingway wrote about the "Running of the Bulls" in Pamplona,Spain in vivid detail, but when the truth came out, he was never closer than a "second floor balcony". He was a great writer, with a great imagination.....Hell they got his own line of furniture now...Hemingway Collection...I don`t know who`s getting paid... He`s dead!!!! But Kim and I went to Pamplona in July of "99" for the Fiesta De San Fermin " Running of The Bulls". It`s in the Northern Basque Region of Spain. Northern slopes of the Alantic Pyrenees. Gorgous country side. But I thought I would take a "Run with the bulls", but my wife put a quick end that thought. How would I have explain to my HMO, I was drunk and got hit by a bull!!!!! They would have said, "Bull!!!!!". Has anyone been watching PBS`s special on the "Blues"????? Outstanding Stuff!!!!!
