Flight - Thanks to the 129th postings, I was encouraged to go back to my Veteran Service Officer for our county. I'm lucky; it is a veteran who really cares about the vet. Today I found out I was awarded a 10% disabiity for tinnitus. They tell me my hearing loss isn't from working on the hueys. Yeah, right. But I'm further ahead than I was a year ago. Thanks for sharing enough of your stories so that I'd try for it. And Gently, Sue is doing really well. She gets tired if she has a really busy day, but she'll be going back to work Monday.

Awe yes Monica.......But it seems to me, with Congressman Mark Foley's adventures, the only thing the Repubs got mad about, was the fact that Monica was a female. I guess it`s OK if you like "young male interns"....

Bill Wolf that was a great tribute to the ones who gave all from the 129th. I just got back from placing Flags in the Susanville Cemetry for Memorial Day. A friend of mine who I work with asked me for one of the bumper stickers I made for the San Francisco VHPA Reunion. He was a Navy Riverboat Guy and he thinks that two 129th Aircraft saved his life on March 4, 1968. He told me that he was pulled out of the water by a Slick with the same Bulldog on the nose as my 129th AHC window sticker (Compliments of Matt Casey) and my Vietnam Veteran proud member of the 129th AHC bumper Sticker. If anyone out there remembers this??? he told me today that he was pulled out of the water at approximately 1300 hours, on March 4, 1968, near Vung Tao. Sounds a little out of the way for the 129th but who knows. He also told me one of the aircraft was having problems and the other one was with him to make sure he got to a safe haven. Thats all I know about his experience so again anyone out there in the n129th you was in Nam March 1968 and may have a memory of this get back at me so I can pass on the info to my friend and Vietnam Brother. Regards Bulldog Cherry Dick Muirhead. Note e mail address in in the contacts section of the 129th Web Site. and he sure would like to know if he could contact the personel

Alvis, I found out last September that a bunch of guys get together at the site in Kokomo in June for another get together. Several from my PTSD group go to it and keep telling me to go and check it out. That is about all I know and not sure if I will take my camper or not yet, or just drive over next Saturday. My Brother In Law that lives here is having Keymo the middle of the week so not sure how he will feel. Just found out last night that the VA bumped him from 40% to 70% ?? Not sure how that worked but the VA doctors are giving him less than a 15% chance of living past six months. Three years ago I was busting his balls about going and filing with the VA and when he did he got 40%. Him and his wife would have been really hurting now if he hadn't but cancer was not in my mind. Well Flight, have a good & safe day, REMEMBERING ALL OUR BROTHERS WHO ARE NOT WITH US TODAY.

Good afternoon Flight! I've been slacking off a bit too on checking in. I talked to Larry Stokes the other night and he let me know he is no longer working. His non VA shrink decided that he couldn't do his job with PTSD and put him on medical leave. So wanted anyone to know that his e-mail address was at his work. I am hoping that he can make it to Mark's or Kokomo if gas prices don't do us in. I told him he can stay in my camper for either event. My one brother in law's cancer is really bad and I don't know if he can make it to Kokomo later so I am hoping to take him for the get together next weekend. Is anyone from the 129th going to be at this mini?

Jim and all, I'll be taking extra books to the reunion to have people autograph (as many as possible). I should have a final cost for the book in a week (still figuring shipping). It will probably be between $25 and $30 a copy. I know that may seem a tad high, but keep in mind the book is 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 323 pages (thats a big book!), some color pages, and a cdrom and we only had 300 printed. The cost also covers postage and mailing boxes. I've added a small amount that will go to the 129th Christmas Fund that helps some of our folks out during the holiday to for about a dozen books that are going to VIP's. I'm not keeping a penny more than what I paid to have it printed, boxed, and shipped (it was a privalge and honor to put it together). Thanks to Bill Whelan who owns the print shop, the cost is going to be MUCH lower than if we had gone to another commercial printer. I know that Bill Whelan did a few things to the book to make it even greater (some color pages, laminated cover) at his own expense. I'll keep you all posted. I'm stuck in Phoenix (thanks to US Airways) but will be home for the weekend. Can't wait to see you all in Orlando!

May I make a suggestion? I know that Jim would like an autographed book, too, but it seems unfair for one person to collect them for several people. What if several "spare" copies were somewhere on a table where everyone could sign them, and then first come first serve on who got them? Jim is unable to come but I know he wants a book, Bill. In fact, we'd like 3 if the cost is not prohibitive because we're going to donate one to our local library. Only one would need to be signed. I understand if it isn't possible. Thanks. Sue H.

He has been going through chemo since January for lung cancer and we saw him on Friday evening at which time he told us it had spread to his brain. He starts radiation tomorrow for 10 days to slow the progression of this hopefully. The outlook however it not very promising. Please keep Charlie and JoAnne and their family in your prayers and thoughts. If anyone would like to send him emails or cards, please send us an email and we will forward the information to you. Fred Alvis, I`m still here, I`ve just been busy with a new job......I took a job with a church organization......Fellowship Deaconry, a well-regarded, international Christian organization that`s based in Germany. Fred, I like working jobs that are redeeming, and you help your fellow man(person). I`m in Plant Operations, of a 72 acre Christain compound. I had to get a FBI fingerprint and background check, credit check( which I thought was a bit to personal), and references .......And I passed my drug test. But they work on a "European work schedule"....35 hours a week. My benefits are almost as good as Civil Service. They have a outstanding payscale( gotta keep those unions out), so I`ve really been into my new job.......They are Germans, Swiss, Austrian, workers. We have "sisters", kinda like nuns.....but they are nurses......But being Europeans......Everybody likes to have a beer, ......we have over 60 different beers in our on-site 4 star restruant.....employees can drink after work (within reason)can`t get screwed up. We have a full 62 room state of the art hospital.....doctors, nurses.....everything in a normal hospital. We got a on-site bank, barber shop/hairdresser. But our last "independent living" stand alone home sold for 1.4 million, so these old folks are very wealthy.....The old fellow who bought it was on the Board of Directors for J.C. Penny. I have access to a three bay maintenance garage....I can work on my own car, after work if I want to. So I`ve been busy, but I`m around.......I hope when I get to the gates of Heaven, St. Peter will let me in......"Fred Skaggs, you`re welcome here, but you have to go to the "left side" of Heaven. Because Jerry Falwell don`t want you over on the "right side" of Heaven"......LOL

most of you that have been to a vhcma reunion know Charlie Rains and his battle with cancer. It started in his neck and thought it and been beaten. The following is a forward... I have been informed that Charlie Rains is not doing well. As most of you know, Charlie has been battling cancer for the last two years. It started in his neck and though many chemotherapy and radiation treatments he has been holding his own. I have just been asked to post the following. Charlie has asked that the Board and the membership be informed of his condition. He has recognized that the organization is very important to him and that his brothers would want to be informed of what is going on with him, as he was always wanting to be informed of his brothers well being. In November 2006, Charlie was re-diagnosed with cancer. This time in the lung. He has been through numerous chemotherapy treatments since January 2007 and it seems that the cancer has continued to grow involving the ribs. As of May, tests indicate that it has spread to the brain. He will be having radiation treatments for the next two weeks to help minimize the potential side effects related to the brain cancer. Please keep us in your prayers as he continues to fight this disease process. Joanne & Charlie Rains ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well 4 weeks to LZ Orlando. Looking forward to another 129th reunion along with our VHCMA Brotherhood. It will be an exciting week for everyone whom attends. Alot of folks are bring the grand kids. I scoped out the hotel and it looks great. 2 miles from the attractions. And about 45 minutes to Daytona Beach. As for the 129th Brothers and Sisters whom are coming. We have some special things going. Bill wolf will have the 129th Book with him. And Hopefully we will have Fred Alvis, Ron Paye and Mark Jackson to tell about their trip to England. Hello Flight. I can't seem to find an upcoming events page,is there one? It would be nice to have a separate page to collect info on reunions and gatherings like Orlando and Kokomo. I grew up about 40 mi from Kokomo, by the way. OK, Bill where's the book? I am anxiously awaiting my copy! I am about to publish my own book which includes my tour with the 129th. Anybody who knew me then, especially those of you who crashed with me, I'd love to hear from you. That is if you're not still mad at me! None of them were my fault, I swear! Just kidding, I'd enjoy contact with everybody. It's been too long. Your Brother, Bill Heilman, wheilman@valornet.com

Ray, brother take care and I hope to see you and Gail in Orlando. I have made arrangements to have the Blackhawk flight simulator scheduled for the last period of the day on 18 and 19 Jun. There will be 2 vietnam pilots as instructors to show you guys and gals some of the newer stuff our soldiers train on these days. I can also schedule to get into a couple of other trainers, the apache and avcat, which is a combined arms trainer. I just need to know if anyone heading to Fla wants to stop in Savannah, you might enjoy the side trip. Robert if you will google "Army Aviation Hertiage" it will take you to a wonderful site, where you will find their show schedule and you should be able to get that Huey ride, some of our guys took rides in Atl at the reunion. I look forward to hearing if anyone is interested in the sim, just post here so that I can get an ideal of how many might like the tour. And Gale, looks like I will be in Orlando by myself, don't drink anymore but I sure will be glad to buy you a beer. Take care da stickman is outta here.

Forgive me for intruding in your log but after reading I wanted to share a bit of my story. This letter was written last July. My wish is for it to show my pride I have in each of you. Subject: 334th and 189th > Good afternoon to all. > I am writing to what few contacts I have for the 334th and 189th. A > couple of years ago I wrote on a board about looking for someone who > knew my dad,CW2 Bernard E.Meister Dragon 39. Some of you I talked to > and some even gave me valuable information. Well time has a way to open > things up when you continue your personal searches. > What have I gained from this search? Well for one I know my dad did two > tours. > First tour was with the 189th and I am the proud owner of a Ghost Riders > patch. > I now know that my dad was Dragon 39 during his second tour with the 334th. > I have had two major gifts since my last contact with any of you. These > gifts include all of his medals from his service. What I was proud of > the most was his DFC with the orgional citation and orders. See only > last week did we bury Bernard Edwin Meister's mother. The day before > the burial I was given a duffel bag full of stuff. Medals, letters, high > school diploma, vast amounts of some military records, flight time > records and most of all personal photos of my dad at various ages and > times in his life. > Along this journey my mother and I mended a relationship long overdue. > she then gave me what few items she had. > Finally my cousin gave me what items he had. Hince the medal collection > was complete. > > I spent this past weekend reading letters from my dad during his last > tour. I met the man behind the pictures. I saw his depression for not > getting a direct commission, I saw him being very proud about being a > pilot both as a Cobra and Slick. I was semi able to walk with him > through his tour. Wanting cheese and Lipton soup. Loving the ac and > hating the lack thereof. > I walked through his last letter in the field where he had a chance to > go to a survival course for his last days but he decided flying was much > better than eating snakes and worms. I walked through the red cross > letters and finally through the telegrams.... Then through sympathy > cards and letters to his mother. > I am proud to be his son and am glad I have had the chance to meet him > somewhat. Some of you mentioned that you may have pictures of him or > his helicopter. Some may have pictures of the time he was there. I > would love to see some of them. But most of all I want to meet some of > the men he served with. To all members of the 334th. The information on > the web is poor for the 69 onward time period. I would like to change > this but I need your help. To the 189th I thank you for giving me the > desire to learn more and the future chance of meeting some of you. > > This last request may be bold but understand from whom it comes. I > would love to have a 334th patch from the Cobra era. This is one that > means alot to me. Also I dont know how to go about getting a set of > wings to complete his medal collection. Forgive me if this is a brazen > request but it is not intended to be as such. > > My last goals are for me to get his name correct on the wall. His middle > name is incorrect. I also want to correct records that have him listed > as a CWO and not as a CW2. I am now in the process of getting his > tombstone corrected. Lastly I want to fly in a heuy. I will never get > the chance to be in a cobra so I have to accept that. > > Well thank you for reading this lengthy discourse. Thank you all for > your help and I am proud of each and every one of you. > Robert Meister son of CW2 Bernard E. Meister Since this letter was written I have accomplished a few things. I got a full replacement set of medals and even a few not expected. I also recieved a set of wings from a fellow vet,Huey ride? I am still dreaming on that one. His tombstone in memphis is now corrected. It has been a journey the last couple of years. I have since recieved a couple more items that are dear to me. My mother gave me my Dads Saint Christophers medal that he had on when he died. My aunt also had a set of dog tags, guess what? One was my Dads and the other was my Grandfathers from WW2. Along with that I discovered in the belongings my Grandfathers ribbons and medals. The pride being his Purple Heart with the orders tucked away with it for over 60 years. I didnt mention that I am going to an important meeting in less than 30 days to convince a University to build a war memorial but thats another story I write this to say thank you each for who you are and what you did. Boys to Men and a bound of Brotherhood that I can only envy. I salute each of you. Proud son of CW2 Bernard E, Meister 334th AHC, 189th AHC, Robert Meister

Alvis, you are absolutely right. Not doing screenings and mammograms is like playing Russian Roulette, esp. once over 50. (Gave my age away, eh?) I was fortunate to have an excellent doctor who while treating me for gall bladder, did scans and ultrasounds to make sure nothing else was going on. It was then my tumor was found. I had no symptoms. The second best thing you can do for yourself - all of us - is to be your own best advocate for your healthcare. Do not expect anyone to do it for you - we need to insist on answers. That's how I got a great doctor who gave me the "heads up" I needed. Some days it seems that there is no one out there who cares, but then when you all responded and have been so kind to me, I am reminded that there is. Thanks. Sue H.

Go figure, I finally get a chance to attend a reunion, and the rug beneath my feet is pulled away. The insane world of Trucking Management has once more struck again. I now find myself back behind the steering wheel I got away from in 2000. So, instead of attending the reunion, I will be most likely delivering foodstuffs to an Publix Market somewhere in the Southeast. I know Wink will keep me updated. Later gotta roll.

Hurrah! Good news at my doctor's appointment today. I do not have to go back to Madison again unless something else "pops" up. No radiation needed. They tell me that if one had to have a cancer, this is the one to get. Stitches were removed (thankfully) and things were very good. Because this is such a rare tumor, everyone at the doctor's office wanted to be in on the appointment. I had three doctors, one med student, the physician's assistant and an LPN. Beginning next week I will start taking a preventative medication called Gleevec which in the last 3 years has been proven to stop this particular type of tumor by stopping production of the protein on which it grows. If I would be in the 15% for which it doesn't work, then because I will be getting regular CAT scans, Dr. Mahvi will "cherry pick" them out. With luck, I should not have to have major abdominal surgery for this again. All in all Jim and I felt very good after the doctor's visit. Thank you to our 129th family for all the emails and support shown on the web site. It is much appreciated!

Good evening Flight. Had gone through my records with Social Security after leaving the VA yesterday. If anyone is dealing with them, check the files yourself. I called them again today and asked what the SSI Doctors report ment by saying I alleged having hearing loss & ringing @ 27db & 5000 Hrz. She than stated my hearing is normal. They only requested records for nine months before the filing date, so where she read Carpel Tunnel is my right hand, she commented that I had not sought any treatment, etc. This was the case for about everything I listed & the shrink did the same thing but mostly pointed out that I did not see my shrink in the past six months. I don't know if they even know what PTSD is but is also alleged. So that is the TIP!! I am going back and getting copies of every record for the past 35 years. You all take care and hope this might help someone before they end up with the run a round.

Some News, my oldest son Graduated from Purdue this weekend after ten years. Happy to see the day come. ALSO, today I went to the Indy VA for an MRI & PTSD Group. On the elevator they had a nice little poster with a map of Vietnam and unit patches, mostly major ones. BUT ON THE LEFT SIDE was our unit Patch. It just had a note from the VA Library. I may have looked like a nut pointing at it and the pin on my hat. Has anyone seen this anywhere else?

update from Simon...Evening from the UK. Spoke with Samira at ABC yesterday. she rang just as I was about to leave the office. New York Office liked the piece she had cut but had asked her to add some more and different pictures, so she phoned me asking for some more footage. I sorted some out for her last night at home and then with the help of News 24 I fed the new pictures down to her earlier this afternoon (Friday). She was then going straight back into the edit suite to re-cut her piece with the London reporter. She sounded confident that it would be shown this weekend. I would hope it does as they were keen for her to recut it asap. So unless some earth shattering news story breaks over the weekend then it stands a good chance of seeing the light of day. As Samira said in her first e-mail if it doesn't go to air then she will pop it on the two web sites, but hopefully it will get broadcast first.

If it does not air this weekend, I will put it up on one or both of our digital platforms: ABC News Now or ABC.com. Would you like me to send you a copy of the piece and if so, what format. Thank you again for your help. Samira (ABC, London) So fingers crossed guys. Hope all is well with you?

Good Morning 129th. Just Checking in & copying "the mail". Alvis, that was one trying moment - changing the flat. I guess the moral of the story is buy regular/normal size tires.

After reading all the stories about the six NJ jihadist boys I think, since they want an Army post so badly, an apt and just punishment would be to just go ahead and give them Fort Polk!!! That would teach them!!!

Fred, important thing is, as you said, you can look back and laugh at the day now. Ain't that the way it always goes? I used to call that when I was turning wenches for dad " Basic mechanics, with a capital B". Stuff like, If there is something for the air hose or extension light cord to get wrapped around, it's gonna. Or, as I was setting on the tire and up on the frame of a truck and dropped a wrench, you can be sure it landed all the way on the floor and exactly in the center of the truck underneath it and had to climb down and use a extendo magnet to reach it. Take care all, we love you.........always a brother...........

Jeeze. Susan called me from her work yesterday evening,at my work. Seems she had a flat, needed help changing, ect. No problem right? pretty basic stuff. It gets better. Susans little sports car has low profile tires.Susan hit a pot hole, whatever, ripped a 3 inch gash in the sidewall.( stuff happens,no problem). Lug nuts are special "splined" type, found on custom wheels.Someone forgot to leave the lug nut "key",or adaptor, in the car when we bought it.grrr, cant get the wheel off.OK, drive to Wallyworld, get 2 cans of fix a flat and a "plug in the ciggerette type air pump". Seems the gash contained a hole just large enough to expell air, almost as fast as we could put it in.grrr..."ok Susan,I am off tomorrow and we will just leave the car here and i will fix tomorrow".Next day. Grab my tools, off i go.Stop by the place where we bought the car 6 months ago...you guessed it,no deal left behind. Stop by tire shop..nope, we need a lug nut to see if we have a "key".Stop by a specialty custom tire and rim place..."need a lug nut to find the correct key".Try to hammer a "just under sized" socket onto the lug nut. No deal, shape of the rim pervents it.get out hammer and punch..no deal..but back punch...replace with chisel..works great at screwing up lug nut,no deal on getting it off,or even starting to turn. starts to rain..again.Lug nuts have been put on with the impact wrench from hell.Several missed hammer blows result in swollen fingers and lumps on back of hand.It starts to lighting.and rain harder.Did i mention the constant strem of people giving helpful advice? such as " hey, weld a nut on it"( sure, going to pull a welder out of my back pocket and plug it in 2 miles away)ect. Put tools up,went to Auto Zone, looking for a type of screw/bolt extractor, but one that would fit nuts.no deal.went to NAPA..they had one..yesssss...was a one time use tool and cost 60 bucks...no way am i going to do that.Did I mention i had a Dentist Appt, fast approaching time limit? it stopped raining.Torn lug nuts,no progress, few options left.Go home, collect Susan, make desperate plan.Grab portable air tank i have, plug in my compressor to fill.Blow circuit breakers AFTER looking for hose and connectors, for what seemed like hours.fill tank,go back to car.Tell Susan to get car ready to drive when i say go. fill tire, yell go. car goes maybe 100 yards, tire flat.refill tire, yell go. same thing again.Have made it to major crossroads, longest light in town is red.hop out, fill tire just as light is turning, yell go.whew, made to "Big O Tires".Had been there hours ago, seeking lug key. They remembered us.Young guy that also works there, over hears of conversation. He walks to his tool box, bingo, has the "KEY". Manager say they will have to tourch the rim off cause of distroyed lugs.( custom rims,I dont think so). Buy TWO keys for lug nuts, grab hammer and 4 way.off they come.no problem.Jeeze, the guy could have saved me 1/2 tank of gas, hours and hours of wasted time, sore fingers and hand,if he had simply ask his macanhic.laughing to myself now..whew,what a day.Oh,it didnt rain anymore,Dentist appt was switched (their doing) to monday and ran out of smokes. hope this makes someone smile,it does me now.

*** BOOK UPDATE ***: I know many of you are anxious to get a copy of the book, so wanted to update you. I got an email from Bill Whelan (129th'er) who owns the printing company where our book is being printed. He says the book should be done around the end of the week and then he will be shipping them to me. Bill indicated that he is going to laminate the cover which will make it look even better and be more durable. Even though Bill has given me a price per book which is basically his cost, I know he has done some other things with the book at his own expense. Thanks to Bill Whelan, I'm not sure this book would have made it this far without his help!! As soon as the books are ready and I have the final cost per book, I will send out emails, post the info here, and update the information page at: http://www.wolfcms.com/book.html. I'll also be bringing some to the reunion. Bill

Many years ago,a book was written about a very far away place. The book was titled,"Hell is a very small place".The book is about a battle fought over 50 years ago.A long time ago,but this battle took place after we were all born. Some of us had already started to school.Today is the anniv. of that battle, lost by the french F.L. Hell in a very small place is used to discribe the battle for Dien Bien Phu,a small villiage in N. Vietnam. The rest is history.

It's been a long week in Madison while undergoing abdominal surgery. Recovery from that is not fun! We got home today (Sun). Glad to have that behind me. I had a rare tumor that reoccurs. The last one was 15 years ago. There is a new drug now called Gleevec which they will put me on so no further tumors grow. It works in 85% of the cases so am praying I fall in that percentage. I'm sure Susan and Alvis know all about percentages, and for the most part, I'd just as soon not hear them. Seems my luck has me in the low part! This time though the recovery involved much better pain management, so now I will sit home for a while and heal. Jim kept me posted about the phone calls and good wishes on the 129th. We both really appreciated knowing your support was there for us.

Hey Ray and Gail, I hope you had a great aniversary!! Mine was on the 1st, 36 years, so we aren't too far apart. I forgot all about mine till 10 minutes till midnight, when I saw the card on the table. So I was able to at least say "Happy Aniversary" on the right day, lot of good that did me...Being retired makes me forgetfull I think.. Vickey, welcome aboard!! It looks like you are the official voice for the Stickman now and we are looking foreward to meeting you in Orlando. I just hope he gets out of those ropes in time. My reservations are in and the room is booked so things are moving right along and I hope to see lots of the 129thers there. Sue, I hope your hospital stay went well and you are well on your way to recovery! Fred Alvis, I printed out a couple of the maps that you directed me to and used them with Google Earth to pinpoint the Lane "South Hotel" landing pad pretty closly. As I see it it is 13d 48min North, 109d 05min 50sec East. It looks like you can just make out what appears to be the "V" where the big "H" was located. I wish they had a little more resolution in the maps of the area. Thats it from here for now. Take care and "Think Orlando", as it is coming soon. L8r... Hey gang%%%%%%%for the mini here at the cabin in Ohio I have set aside the days of the 12th,13th,14th,and 15th of July. That's a Thursday, Friday, Saterday and Sunday. I think if you just "Map Quest" this address 5029 ST. ANTHONY RD. CELINA, OHIO 45822, you will be able to also find hotels in the AO for those who don't do outhouses. Remember though, there is camping available here, with electric hook ups at the cabin and room in the cabin for many. The room above the garage is huge. Just bring a bed roll or I will try and find a place to aquire some bunks. Come all the days or any of them. Hope to see lots of you here............always a brother.................
