hi flight someone once wrote that a plane is designed to fly itself, but a helicopter is designed to destroy itself and that a helicopter pilot just prevents that from happening. well i want everyone to know that in the 129th we had the best damn destrution preventers in the whole damn army. i am convienced you guys to fly a washing machine if they had put rotors on it. so a hand sluate to 129th pilots. this is one crewchief that is grateful that he served with the best. clear up left.

Subject: Living will Last night, my wife and I were sitting in the living room, and, I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent upon some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug." She got up, unplugged the TV, and threw out my beer. Bitch . .

Animal, his name,I believe is Dennis F..something or another...not sure.Interestingly enough,at the "WALL" dedacation in DC,back in the 80s,there were only 3 129thers there that I knew of.It was the 3 of us off that aircraft,,,Mr. Gibson didnt show.None of us knew the other 2 were on the ship till we started talking..you could have knocked us over with a straw when we discovered it.I forget the crew chiefs name and where he was from, but the PP was going to Dental school in Texas somewhere.Heck of a nice guy.Would still LOVE to find Gabby,,,Mr. Gibson. That would complete one of the circles for me.

Alvis....late summer, 71? I remember the story of a ship that went inverted and recovered. We thought the pilot was a hero, as we were always told that a Huey would not recover from inverted, instead, he was put on report for pppt. Rick. about time biffle broke through, still wish he drove a Chevy. :>)) Thanks for the refresher on 632. Junior posted on this site a couple years ago, but I haven't heard from him in a long time.

TINS...His hand was shaking as he lit his smoke. He was flying as gunner and they had just nursed the ship back to a safe A.O. A cold sweat spotted his flight suit as the MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY still rang in his head. Stepping out of the ship and onto the ground ,was as sweet as anything he had ever experienced. He now knew he had cheated death and was on borrowed time.Life tasted sweet, full and amazing.Big trouble lay down the road, but that was secondary,he was alive. They had been flying out of a special forces camp near Tuy Hoa.The sky was blue and the winds gentle, another day of paradise, as only Vietnam could give.Picking up a load of civilian Vietnamase, they had headed across the mountians and bad guy country. They headed thru no fly zones, but the air was good that day.A happy mood was on board, the crew were all friends and the crew chief was 2 weeks short.Gabby, the pilot ,offered the chief a chance for a "short timers" stick time. The gunner, who had never flown on the chiefs side, wanted to sit there, knowing both his guns were in tip top shape. The Peter Pilot, didnt care,he just wanted to sit behind a machine gun.All changed places at 4000 feet. What the heck, helicopter crews lived a dangerous life and became bored very easily with everyday dangers, this was new and exciting. The Vietnamase hadnt a clue what was happening, and stared in wide eyed astonishment as the crew climbed around seats in mid-air,laughing and smiling. After a few mimutes of prep talk, the crew chief had the 'stick". He was doing ok,so everybody relaxed and enjoyed the flight.Quite suddenly, the ship was hit with cross winds and the crewchief lossed control. The ship twisted and turned many ways ,then started falling out of the sky. Just like in the movies, the sound of a shrill whine of an aircraft crashing was heard.Wall insulation was ripped down by the wind, ammo belts were twisted around the gun mounts, altitude was fast disappearing, trees were growing bigger and bigger. The Peter Pilot ,back in the gunners well was calling out,"air speed Gabby, for Gods sake, airspeed. Then he started calling MAYDAYs and telling our position.WE were dead.Out of control from 4000 feet, falling like a rock. The civilian passengers were all screaming and praying. The gunner made his peace with GOD,a feeling of calm came over him.He felt at peace, for the first time in his life,,,he knew he was going to die.He thought of his mom,and the hurt he would cause her by his death.Somehow, perhaps it was lady luck,or just good piloting, the ship pulled out just at tree top level.Looking around the ship,it was a mess.People crying, insulation ripped off the walls, pasengers "luggage" scattered everywhere.Everyone just sat back and couldnt believe they were still alive. The airforce spotter plane that had responded to the MAYDAYS,was told to disreguard.Flying at a very slow ,tree top level, they collected their thoughts and actions. At that time, they were flying above a VC or NVA training camp, with dirt trails from trucks evident.Just then,a NVA solider, jumped out from under a tree and ripped off a clip of AK-47 rounds at the ship's belly.Incomming, incomming ,the gunner screamed into the mic, grabing the butterfly handles of his M-60. He couldnt fire back, his belted ammon was wrapped around the gun mount from the wierd airsteam. The Pilot was yelling "who is firing, who is firing?"Incoming, incoming "screamed the gunner again. By that time, the ship had flown out of the fire zone, but new worries settled on the crew. All were checking the guages and looking for tail- tail smoke or fluids slipping out into the slipstream in a thin long cloud.Making a 180 degree turn, they headed back for the special forces camp..a place of safely to sit down in.Thats when the cold sweat started..where we hit? What kind of damange was done to the ship pulling "over tourques? They limped back to SF camp, accompied by the still crying passengers. They landed, passengers scrambled off the ship,as if it were sinking at sea.The crew, shut down the ship, and then all went to sit in the shade of a tree,in silence. Even the non - smokers, lit up a smoke. After perhaps a minute, the gunner started to check out the ship. Then the crewchief and pilot joined him.All was clear, till the gunner spotted some "anti tourque" screws missing off the tail boom. The ship was then "red Xed",it couldnt be flown again, till repaired.Radio calls went out and the crew was "rescued",to be flown back to base.At every dip in the air,the crew of the stricken ship cringed.Later that day,a Chinook was dispatched to pick up and sling the huey back to base.Flying over the south China Sea at 5000 feet,a sling broke loose. The gallent ship started to swing back and forth,so it was "cut" loose,to fall into the china sea, never to be seen again.Meanwhile, back at the base, the shit hit the fan.Who cares,I am still alive today.

Welcome Home again guys, I see you have been chatting amongst yourselves about 632. It great we have together started something. My fondness for the Hueys and Cobras from my days an an engine mechanic with 11th Armored Cav has become a love for this ship. As information has come in from the units she served with it is now a desire to tell her stroy and the men who knew her by writing a book. I can't do it without your help. I am looking for stories, pictures of the ship, men who served with her or anything that will add to it's history. I see you have been talking about getting her painted like she was in your unit. Unfortunatly we can not do it for everyones unit. At the moment the current plan is to see if we can get her painted as she was with the first unit she served with the 134th but your unit will be recognized. You may not be aware of these facts that led us to this decision. 632 was originally assigned to the 134th as a new ship and they picked her up in Ft worth and eventually took her to Nam. She served 2 years 67-69 with the 134th. She saw heavy action during Tet and was part of a 3 ship flight who got 11oo confirmed kills during Tet. She also flew air support for the Battle of Hill 875 "Hamburger Hill" as well as saw action around An Ke and the Ashau Valley. She flew over 1200 hours on her first tour. For these reasons we have decided on the Devil colors of the 134th. However we intend to recognize the other units she served with by having the Cougar (57th AHC) and your Cobra patches put on the front 2 doors. Please guys help me out despite any disapointment our plans do not include. I have talked to Don McCort but neglected to get his email and street address. If anyone can help please do. Don is sending me the Call Sign plaque from 632 to display in our Museum in Monroe. If any of you have items such as this our museum will display it with recognition to donor. Again please help, Don

Mark, the Cobra was also painted on the tail. The nose art you pictured is from 212. It was on her before I took over as crewchief.

Shorty, I have a couple pictures of 632, one with Roberts and Chico, another with Danny Samsel. I'm trying to remember who might have crewed her between them. Lupo? Davis? Did smitty have her before Samsel? When Samsel was there, 632 was a light setup, he got shot in the foot when he was clearing a minigun. Hope this helps you remember. Jerry Heckathorn, I made a quick trip to Gettysburg this past weekend. I'll be heading down again this summer, hopefully we can catch up with each other. Fred Skaggs, I came back up 287, how far are you from MAHWAH?

I am in touch with the person setting up the deal with the helicopter 632. He did say to me that he would like to but 129 on the doors so if anyone has pics of a door with 129th, can you seed them email to me. Also he would like to but the Cobra back on the nose piece as it was in Nam. Mike LoveJoy was the pilot and I believe I was the crew chief but do not remember who was co-pilot or gunner. It might have been Stantly (Love Dog) Roberts but not sure. Anyone remember that day we were hit and made a emergency landing on top of a mt at a old sleep over place. I remember the helicopter had to be shorted out cause the wires were shot in too. The big bolt out of the four that hold the tail boom on was missing and after talking to the Bell Rep in Pleiku where the helicopter was taken by a Chithook. The bolt was the biggest one and the rep said the tail boom should of fell off, god was on our side that day. Please if anyone has some good pictures of nose piece or he doors it would be helpfull. Good flying to you all and keep the head above the clouds. The tears came to my eyes when I saw that ship again after almost 33 years. Shorty Howard Boling PLEASE IF ANYONE REMEMBERS THE OTHER CREW MEMBERS PLEASE LET MARK OR MYSELF KNOW, PLEASE?

Hi there flight, been off line for a while but thats all changing thanks to chapter 31. I have some pictures of our guns, not sure on the tail numbers, eyes don't see as good as they use to, so if I can help let me know.....Mark I have a picture of the back of my bike that some might enjoy......How do we make that happen???....I look forward to seeing as many as possible at the reunion.............I be going up with a door gunner from the 213th. We met in Germany after our tours in Nam, we both got assigned to post detail as there were too many crew chiefs for the birds they had. I did finally get to fly there, ended up a the company commanders ( a full bird ) crew chief. Bad new was the first sergeant went every where with us and he hated me.

ONE OF YOUR VETERANS HAS BEEN FOUND! Hopefully this got your attention. I am a member of VVA 142 in Monroe Mi just south of Detroit. We have a great VN Memorial Park and Museum in Monroe just off I75. Included in the park is a UH1 Gunship (originally a B but on your rooster shows M) tail number 66-00632, It has been there since 1987 and we proudly display it. I am now trying to compile her war stories, pictures, or even artifacts relating to the ship any of you may have. I really want to tell the vistors to our museum and park what she did in Nam. If any of your group can contribute to her story, I would appreciate it. After all her story is yours too. Re: 632.....I last remember Lovedog Roberts and El Chico Smith as crew on her. Maybe Griff or Shorty Boling can give a little more detail from the crew side. I'm sure Alemaster or Baron 71 can fill in some of the blanks..... The weather pattern has gotten wierd. We had a super mild winter, a dry April, then nothing but clouds and rain for the last couple weeks. New England is full of rolling hills and small streams, so there's all kinds of localized flooding going on. As I said earlier, I live about 75 feet above a river, with low land to my east. When the river floods, it's more of a niusance than anything else. The 3 mile drive to town has at times taken an hour of back road driving.

After finding this site, and one very good friend I flew with,I decided to stick around a bit.The days passed, the posting by different folks led to finding more friends I flew with. And,I made friends in here. There is a little piece (peace as well?)of me in here.So after reading this and that, about "Pop a Top",I decided it was time to "test" the waters, dispite my fears.I decided to have my "first" reunion.Pulling up to the "Pop a Top",one sunday, parking,I saw a gentleman and a lady, doing chores on the side of the building, near the side door. They greeted me as I walked up,and we bagan to talk.First off, they said,"Sorry, the bar is closed on sundays"."Just my dumb luck",I thought.Talking a bit more, they found out I was a 129ther.I found out it was Mark and Dee I was talking to.A few hugs, and welcome home brother, they then invited me in for a, well recieved beer. Now ,this is when my reunion started. As I walked around the room,I saw many things you all had sent, and Mark had collected. What really caught my eye,was the chicken plate Jim Westwang (Smitty) had signed ,then sent.As my eyes traveled over the plate,I saw names that flashed into memory, accompanied by little slices of memories,of a life once ,long ago.I saw names from this site, friends, one and all.I was amazed,it touched me.It was the first, of the last few chapters,we started long ago in a bloodied land that touched us all.It was part 3,of my NAM experience.I wont even go into 2,most of you know that story...drugs,alcohol,women,jobs,jail,ect.or any mix of those.Anyway,Mark kinda left me alone,to brouse and look, alone with my memories. But i wasnt alone, you signed names were there with me and the times we had. That was my first, thanks Mark and Dee.

Smitty I might be able to organize the 129th at LZ Phoenix. Had some experience since I organized the 129th mini-reunion back in 97. In 98 there was two 129ther's Glenn pearmain and my self so, that was really the first reunion. Liz got me a 129th flag when they was up for bid. Liz and Gently worked that surprise. So, we will have our colors there. If wasn't for the VHCMA where would we be? All our brothers ans Sisters will be missed. This is the 20th anniverary of the VHCMA. Been asked to run for office again. I will decide once I get there. Baron have safe flight. It's a once an a life time experience to make the RFTW. We'll never get too old to make a trip to the wall. Well flight have a safe day. LZ Pheonix in about 6 weeks. We need to try figure out how many of us is going to be there, so we can get a room. Always A Brother Alex

Well, Thursday is the big day. I’m on a mission. I pull pitch at zero 7 hundred. I pick up my wingman, Mike Huber a crew chief from the 129th. In Fort Stockton Texas on Friday. Then on to Phoenix where we will be joined Darrell Jenkins by a medic from the 498th. We’ll arrive at LZ Ontario Sunday Night; sign up then it’s off to the Wall. We’ll arrive Friday of the following week. L.A. to D.C. I’ve done parts of the RFTW, but this will be the first time I’ll go ALL THE WAY. By the time I get home I will have put about 6000 miles on my Scooter. I’ve been told, I’m too old, I’m nuts. The fact is I’m over the hump, and Gittin short. This is something I’ve got to do. So say a prayer for me, and all the guys that can’t ride. Bulldog 257, Cobra 959 and all the POW & MIA’s. If you live along the route, come see me. If you want to call while I’m on the run, my cell is 337-319-9980. You can see the Maps at www.RFTW.org . “Gone But Not Forgotten” BARON

Well Goodmorning flight: First of all Congradulatons to Art and Family. Also, Mark and Family. Kal sorry won't me making the reunion. Will miss all whom won't be there. This old broken down 129th Bulldog will get in on Thurs.22nd. I am supposed to have a room with two beds in it. Will share with a non-smoker. As some has mentioned the VHCMA is nice because of all the different units, along with our sister units. But, also the time has come to consider a 129th reunion. We have grown in Brothers over the years. I think we need a commitee to over see finding a location and time frame. Transportation and hotel will be a major factor. Because we are scattered all over the country. Alex

Kal, you should fly down to Phoenix. I'm sure there will be plenty 129ther's there. It's just too far for me and Debbie's working. I enjoy the VHCMA reunion also, but, personally I could have just as much fun with a "129th only" reunion.Remember how great it was at Ron Payes party at Indy? I'm all for a "first" 129th in Ohio next year and see what happens. I still feel that we could attract more 129ther's if we could meet in some smaller cities.........and I feel like that should be top priority. We're not getting any younger and there's lots of "newbies" out there. Meanwhile, you are all welcome at my house on May 27th for a mini 129th and my birthday (64th). Kal, Alvis, Mark, Ron, Rainer, Paul, Gently & Joe??? I can't put ya up, but, I sure can feed ya!!! Luv you all.

Good evening Flight. It is with great sorrow that I must inform the group that I will not be in attendance at the VHCMA, Phoenix, reunion this year. It is just too far to ride alone and riding alone that far just don't excite me at all. J.W. Wilson, I tried to email you as I did Smitty to inform you B4 posting this but it bounced back to me as "undeliverable." You will need to make a hotel reservation as I do not have one now. I was really looking foreward to this and just hope next years will work out better for us. It appeard that a lot of the regular attendees will not be there this year and a lot of folks haven't been heard from in a long time that would have committed by now. I am just hoping that with all the talk about a seperate 129th reunion next year that the VHCMA reunion doesn't just fade away as it is quite enjoyable. JW & Smitty, I hope I haven't messed up your plans and that you have a great time!!.. Take care all... C U L8r.... Kal...>>>

I just don't know what else to say. We have just way to many things going on back here this summer that it is impossible for us to attend. If the offer still stands though for a 129th gathering here in Ohio next year I will make the arrangements. I am so sorry about this and I kinda feel like I am letting the 129th down. It's just that we have a new grandchild on the way, and we will be starting construction on a new home in June. I'm just not going to be able to make it. Howdy to Art Foster! I think I bought a Mamiya Sekor 35mm camera from you back in 1971, with a homemade aluminum flash bracket (ring any bells?). I still have it, but took it "swimming" once on a canoe trip. The light meter is broken, but I think it may still work if I put some film in it.

The smoke rose, curling thru up thru his fingers. The hint of a smile was was highlighted by the spring sun, shining brightly on his face. The troubled eyes were,I suppose, turned inward toward memories, resulting in the smile. If you could read and hear those eyes, you would hear laughter of young men and helicopter blades, the sing song language of the vietnamase, spoken by saucy young ladies and the sounds of military life at ease,in the background. You might see the smoke off of tires from some brightly painted muscle car, loud exhaust, and the poping of beer cans. The chatter, sights and sounds of lifes road, accompied by a good friend. That sun shone thru the new spring leaves,on his face, spring,a time of new beginnings. He was sitting on the curb,no-one can smoke inside anymore.Inside, was a friend,a good friend.A close friend as only war can make,as only shared dangers can make. Not many can understand this, but those who have been thru it can.Its a bond closer than brothers.Perhaps, that was what the smile was about, times remembered and shared.Ahh,the good life,to be young and free again, lifes promise, streaching out into the misty future, unadorned with the problems of family or responseability. There was sadness in those tired eyes as well. The weight of lifetime.A sadness of the circle of life, which all must travel. With the sadness, hand in hand, was pain. The pain of friendship ending, yet again to another friend. The sadness of helplessness, the failure of being able to share the pain,to lessen the burden, the failure of being able to give badly needed strenght to a friend. The spring sun shone on his face,a face waiting for his friend, perhaps for the last time. His friend lay dying, perhaps the last gift of agent orange, or of the war that savaged his soul.
