Mark I live in the sticks, I mean pump in sunshine sticks in Mississippi. We used to have a lot of problems with field mice. Got these electronic gizmos from walmart that you plug into an outlet. And they really work. Don't know if they affect pets or not. Mama is my only pet and she don't mind. But one draw back thier not as much fun as claymores. Love you all. Ron in the sticks.

Ron, It`s where my wife`s job is located, if they had offices in Columbus, we would be home. Jeff, do you remember the Aussie Bush Hat`s? Cpt. Guilfoyle wanted the 2nd plt. to have unigue hats. He wanted to be like the Cobra`s, with their black hat`s. That was a tradition, and well deserved. So without taking a vote or asking anyone, other than the orderly room. I think the Company CO and the 1st Sgt. was under the impression that it would be a normal blue baseball cap, with wings and Bulldogs on them. But he come one morning with a big box full of camo Aussie Bush Hats. I think he got them at Jip Joint Charlies or what ever that little shop was called. Most of us kept a regular hat with us, so when we were away from him, we`d wear them. One time we were working out of English with 173rd. So we had to eat there that day. Well Cpt. Guilfoyle was the PP with us that day, and we walked into the mess hall. All these hard core grunts and LRRPS look at us, they were literally falling on the floor laughing at us.

FREDDIE, THE LT WAS HOWARD "BUCK" FISHER FROM SOMEWHERE IN PA. I REMEMBER OUR PLT LEADER THOUGHT WE WERE IN SOME KIND OF STATESIDE TRAINING PROGRAM NOT IN A WAR ZONE WHERE BOYS WOULD BE BOYS. I SAW HIM ONE OTHER TIME AT MOTHER RUCKER AROUND 75 OR SO. HE WAS A HUEY IP. BUCK FISHER WAS OK THO. I REMEMBER HE FLEW THE AIRCRAFT THAT PICKED UP THE VIET PETER PILOT THAT WAS ON ROCKY'S AIRCRAFT THE DAY PAUL NOLAN RECEIVED HIS FATAL WOUNDS. AS CUPS SAYS THAT IS ANOTHER STORY.

Jeff, Who was the 1st Lt. 2nd platoon short stockie guy, he made Capt. before I left. He was like second in command after Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle he was a piece work, I wouldn`t give that poor guy any respect. He was ROTC from the U of Cincinnati. I would mess him alot. I would say," Sir, why didn`t you go to Ohio State, Woody Hayes teaches ROTC there. He use to locke my heels and say,"Don`t roll your eyes when I`m talking to you". I would say," It`s the rotor wash sir, something got in my eye. Also I remember Guilfoyle got Curt Frank busted from SP/5 to SP/4, Guilfolye grabbed Curt, and Curt was drunk, after hours, Curt knocked Guilfoyle on his can. Curt would have killed him if we didn`t break it up. Guilfoyle like to do these " late night " strolls thru the second platoon.

Howdy, Flight... Just checking in. I wonder if anyone can help me locate any information on a "shoot-down" report for aircraft 635 sometime in 1971 (I don't recall the date). We were one of several slicks dropping ROK's into a pretty hot LZ, west of Song Cau, I believe. I checked the Gold Book record on this website, but no mention of it. Jesse Hancock, Rick "Rebel" Smith, (possibly Dennis Faucher?)and I certainly remember shutting her down at the PZ to assess the damage, and finding several small arms holes and B40 damage to the tailboom. Also remember the slingloaded ride back to Lane via a Chinook... No one was hurt! Thanks.

Good Morning, Bros and Sis`s and Friends, and Ron DeBates. Sorry Brother I couldn`t remember everything, the mind is a terrible thing to waste. Sure your right, about Ohio being insignificant.Ohio hasn`t contributed much to society. Why we had these two brothers named Wright that thought they could fly like a bird. They invented this thing called a airplane. I don`t know what they thinkin. Then some guys started playing with this little oblong ball, they called it a football of all things. And they got together they played Sunday`s, later on they started playing on Monday nights. then they started this team called the Canton Bulldogs, called themselves the first professional team. They thought they could make a living playing that game. Then these idiots, built a building called the Football Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio. People still visit that building alot. I can`t understand what they see in it. Then We had these two fly-boys name John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, thought they could go to " outer space". They must have been drinkin VO and 7. Then this John Glenn wanted to run for president of all things. But being that Ohio had more presidents than any other state, he thought twice, two of them had been assassinated while in office. Guess they didn`t like boys from Ohio being president. Then there was this DJ in Cleveland, Ohio named Allen Freed, he had a " Whole Lot Of Shakin Goin On ". He like that music so much, he gave it a name. He coined this phrase" Rock and Roll". They said this music went on to define a " generation ". Good Golly Miss Molly what was he thinkin. Here`s the real stupid thing, they took tax money and built a place called " The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame". They got pictures in there of people named Elvis, Jimi,Janis and Little Richard. They even have group in there named after insects, call themselves The Beatles. Now here`s the kicker. In Coldwater, Ohio they got this "ole boy" name Mark. Now he got this idea that he could get on a computer and make a web-site. He wanted to honor some soldier boys that served overseas in a place called Viet-Nam. They called themselves " Bulldogs and Cobra`s". This ole boy Mark must have been drinkin to much VO and 7, on second thought make that JD and coke. I don`t understand why Mark would do that for "a bunch of nuts" as they were called. Ron DeBates, I love ya Brother. Just having fun with you. You know how I love to ramble. Ohio is a pretty good place to live and grow up. I still can`t figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

Respects to all: Ron DeBates: Mark: C.P. here. I was with you in the 129th, callsign "Poppasan", but was in the 1st flight platoon. I saw on the flight log that you asked if I was the PP that was with you and Cpt Hall when you were shot down? No, It wasn't me. I had already left country by then in Apr 70. I'm thankful you're OK. Sometimes, when I mourn the loss of our comrades, I'm even more amazed that we didn't lose a lot more than we did with the type missions that we flew. Mark & I talked about that when I visited him at the Pop-A-Top back in April. It could have been any of us, and sometimes I wonder why not me, but I can't come up with any answers. I asked Mark if he felt any resentment or confusion over the fact that Larry didn't make it when others did? Mark being Mark said something to the effect that "No, he didn't resent it, and as a matter of fact, he was glad we made it through and that all he asked was that we remember Larry, and the others, so their loss wasn't in vain" MARK, YOU CAN EXPLAIN THIS BETTER THAN I, SO PLEASE DO. I hope I'm not misstating our conversation, and that we came to the rather un-original opinion that it was the "luck of the draw". We do know that Larry and the others are proud that Mark started this site as a remembrance to them, and that without their loss, we wouldn't be where we are today! On this memorial day, I said a special prayer for those that went before us. Thank you! Ron, do you know where Ken Hall is these days? He was a good man and I would like to get in touch with him. Good Evening Flight. As Freddie said, 32 years ago today 495 went down outside of An Khe. We'd spent all that time in Cambodia; got home thinking we were free for a while, cuz we saw some shit in Cambodia, (remember LZ Phillips?) and started a morning flying with pilots from 1st flight. Captain Hall was the AC that day. PP - can't remember - sure wished I could. We thought the reason the pilots of the 1st Platoon liked to fly with us guys from the 2nd flight was because we took better care of our helicopters than than 1st flight!!!! LOL Had a bad feeling that day. We flew into An Khe; found a hole in the clouds; refueled and went out to resupply some company from the 4th infantry. Second time in we took lots of fire. 13 rounds went into 495. The pilot, Capt. Hall had two rounds right between his legs; out the top; missed his head by inches. PP had two rounds miss him - also by inches. Gunner had three rounds go between his feet - missing by inches. Crew Chief - ME - had one round ricochet off the back of the pilot's armor seat ending up going through both legs. Not buttocks - (like Freddie says) but lower thigh-cheek area. OK - fine. It's still my butt. Even Freddie always thought it was nice... Anyway!! Was not wearing chicken plate at time. Damn. After that - it was glued to me!! Another one of the 129th aircraft dusted me off the the hospital at An Khe. For all these years, I never once had the opportunity to thank Captain Hall for coming in with that crippled ship. It was shot full of holes. Fuels cells leaking. Transmission shot - literally. To the fire base we sat down on - out of the clear blue sky - these guys had just sat down to a hot meal that another 129th aircraft had delivered - they threw their meals down and came to our rescue. THANK YOU. Whoever you are - I never found out. But you sure saved my butt - literally. If you are out there reading this - sign in and let me know you're still there. But regardless - THANK YOU. To the pilots and crew of the 2nd flight that stopped by that day in the hospital - and after that - I appreciate your concern - thank you. Captain Dunn - 2nd flight platoon leader at the time - Mr. Witcher (from Texas?) thanks much. (And you thought Mark and Freddie rambled??) I've waited 32 years for this. Finding the 129th website opened a whole new world. Isn't this something? Thanks to Mark and Dee for making it all happen. I found this almost a year ago; just about the time of your Louisville reunion. Now find myself pulling suitcases and maps out for Phoenix. Mixed emotions - just hope to see many of you old friends there; and ready to meet many of the new folks too. And the biggest thank you goes to my wife Jamie for 25 years worth of May 29th parties; flying in my sleep; still fighting the war. Some wounds never heal. God Bless You All - and huge hugs to Freddie for remembering - even if you are from Ohio or some Gawd Awful place like nobody ever heard of. There's no place like Montana. Trust me. Ron signing off - too many VO & 7's. Formerly 495 (After the second time it was shot down - same PP both times!!! Who are you??? How many lives do you have left? We're weren't too good together! After that, 697; went to Germany; from there - home. Finally. Uncle Sam never sent a Christmas Card or thank you - but I get a token allowance every month which I call TV money. See you all in LZ PHOENIX. Anybody still need a hat? Got a couple left. Speak now. Will bring a few to Phoenix. God Bless All Brothers and Sisters. Ron

Flight, Brothers and Sisters and Friends, Today marks 32nd anniversary that Brother Ron DeBates was wounded in RVN. As I remember, we had just come back from Cambodia campaign. As I recall his gunner was Brother Jim Pecknold and they were flying in Bulldog 495. He was on a diffrent mission that day and took a round in the buttocks. Sounds funny now, but if it would have been a bigger caliber it would have killed him for sure. I remember thinking, Ron made it back from that Hell Hole in in Cambodia, only to get wounded in the company AO. When you came back from the hospital, everyone wanted to see your wound. Of course, jokes were made and lots of kidding went on. But I remember, brother Pete Rhome and myself walking away from your hooch saying," Damn those army doctor`s butchered Ron, why don`t they send him home". Ron you don`t owe anyone anything, you paid forward a long time ago. Words can`t articulate how we feel about you Brother.

They are our biggest employer, and a lot of folks depend on them for a living. On another subject. Wheres Mark and Dee???? Good question. I looked back through the log and see its been 3 (THREE) weeks since we've heard from them. Thats not normal. I certainly hope and pray that they are OK. MARK & DEE, WHERE ARE YOU???????? C.P. Hello to all members of the 129 th AHC. This is Ed Wagner (Menace) May 1969-Dec. 1970 checking in. I surfed in and out of this web page for several years without commenting mainly due to the fact I'm terriable with names. Recently a few names did ring a bell and I would like to say hello to Paul Bloomfield And Larry Kwiathowski. We all flew together many times in Viet Nam. Hopefully life has been good to both of you and I look forward to seeing your comments on this web page in the future. Paul I was surprise to see you live in Lebanon Mo. I used to make it out their often, I work for Copeland Corp. Which has plants in both Lebanon & Ava Mo.

Last year at this time, Kim and I were still in Europe. So for Memorial Day, we made the trip to Normandy to spend the week-end and honor our vets. I had a plan to do something special that day. As I viewed the cemetary with the each cross with a name and unit my emotions over took me. "I have to do something", I said to Kim. My favorite Uncle Elza Lyons, 1st Infantry Division, a retired Baptist Preacher, had been in the first wave of the D-Day invasion. So I walked to the edge where slopes toward the beach. A barrier that blocks the entrance to beach had the the normal sign`s saying" Do Not Enter ". But breaking the rules, which has not been uncommon for me to do in my lifetime, I jumped the barrier and started my stroll to the beach. Someone yelled," You can`t do that". I turned and said," I`m a Viet-Nam vet, watch me". It took me a good 20 minutes to get to the beach and that`s going down hill. It`s a lot longer haul, than the movies make it look. When I reached the beach, I filled a " baggie" with the red tinted sand and picked up a couple of stones. As I looked back up the hill. I couldn`t imagine how hard it must have been going up that hill under intense fire. I made it back up the hill and had acomplished my mission. On returning to the states, Columbus, Ohio, the first thing I did was call Uncle Elzie, I told him I had his "piece of the rock". When I gave him the sand and a stone that I had ingraved with his name , division, and June 6,1944, he broke down and cried and I cried with him. He will be 83 years old in August and I truely love this man. I always felt that they were the "Best Generation of America". I do not " short change" us Nam Vets or any war vet. But so much more was at stake at that time and period.

Gary Carlson was from Michigan. I was in touch with him for a few years after we were home. Made a cross country trip with him in Nov.-Dec. 1972. Last saw him in 1975. Last phone contact was late 70's. Mike Miles and Fred Skaggs I remember you both. I was Cobra Platoon's armament guy. Known as Charlie Brown or C.B. There from May 4, 1970 to May 25, 1971. Arrived home 31 years ago this Memorial Day. Does anyone have a photo of Shakey Pete's (CF Jay Hillen) gunship I painted with the Captain America theme? It had the chunker turret and ammo box painted with red and white stripes and a field of stars on blue and the Ziz-Zag man on the pylon covers over the mini gun's mounting area. Heavy rocket pods and A/C pilots helmet matched the chunker. It flew like that for about a week or ten days until word came down to make it OD green again. If you do, please arrange to forward a copy. Always regretted not having a picture of that. Thanks

Good Evening Bro`s and Sis`s, memories do come back when I look at pictures from Nam. Picture of a Pilot named Mr. Carlson, we became good pretty good buddies. He brought all the new music from" the world" when he first came into country. He turned me on to a new group from the south, they were a pretty good group. They were called The Allman Brothers Band. "Idlewild South" was name of the album. Can`t remember Mr. Carlson`s first name or what state he was from. Every time I play the songs "Whipping Post" or " Dreams" I think of Brother Carlson.

Just reading down through some of the last few weeks posts, and had a good chuckle. It's nice to see I wasn't the only one to "punch off" some Korean water barrels by mistake. Anyone remember the bulldozer that was dropped from the Skycrane somewhere southwest of Lane? Landed in a dry rice paddy near the base of a hill, instant scrap iron, even the muffler was bent. I'm rambling here as I remember things this page jars loose from my memory. Good memories NOW.

But I want to take this moment to thank you men for serving, for going, for doing the very difficult under very difficult circumstances. It has been my pleasure to be part of this group, to be accepted into this group, and to correspond with so many of you over the past 4-5 years. A questiuon for all. I keep getting mailings from the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association that keeps referring to July in Vegas foer the reunion. Is this true 'cause I thought they were running their reunion at the same time and place as ours. Also, if you have AAA you can get a discount even further than $89 at the Airport Marriot. ben to a few other nam sites lately, looking around, snooping.its good to see brothers trying to reach out, find each other,or themselves. What saddens me,is all the kids trying to find friends that knew their dads and family menbers doing the same. This whole history, from the word go,about vietnam and us, has been like going into a dark room, blindfold on,with hands out, trying to find something familar. Its so sad to see people serching for those that knew their loved ones.My heart goes out to them.We are very lucky,my friends, that mark has brought us all together. You see, when i was transfered down to nin hoa..the ghoastriders...i lost both my room mates, kia, i kave been searching for there familys for 30 years now. Good Morning, Brothers and Sisters and Friends, Haven`t been around for while and thought I would check in and see what`s up. While on my travels, I stopped in Lakeland, Florida to see a old " Nam Bud "( Elton"Glenn" Vicent). We actually met years after Nam in Columbus, Ohio. He was with the 173nd in 67-68, 3bn/503nd Inf. But he was at English when they took over from the 1st Cav. He`s always been very aware of who the " Cobra`s and Bulldogs " are. But in conversation he ask me about a mission or operation called " Lam Son 719 " , at the time, I knew nothing about it. So I checked my history, I was gone, but the " Lam son " operation took place in Feb.71 thru Mar.71. My question is, was the 129th a part of that operation? I worked with a "brother"(Kevin McMicheal) who was with the 48th AHC " Blue Stars", we had done CA`s with them. They were in support of the White Horse division of Koreans. But the 48th was part of "Lam Son" operation, because I checked their web-site. Could anyone tell me about it? Fred

Goodevening Flight: Well alot of commo here lately. And want to extend a Big Welcome Home to our Brothers that have found us. Well the Phoenix reunion is a little over a month off. It looks like a good turn out for the 129th. As most of us have found out, these reunions have become habit forming. We have come along way, since Mark Jackson started this site. Alot of 129th Brothers have reunited. We carry alot of emotions about vietnam with us. But, when were together at these reunions. It seems like it's alot easier to let the emotions and pain we have carried flow, because your Brothers of the 129th are with you. Even this flight log helps everyone in expressing their thoughts. We are a large family. There is alot of Brothers still out there, waiting to be found. And I know Larry and the rest of the 129th KIA's are proud to see the job Mark has done bringing the 129th home. Mark Thanks My Brother!! I know there are Brothers whom check this web site, but, don't log on. Hey! were all family here!! Always A Brother!! Alex 65-68

Respects to all. C.P. Bloomfield reporting in to the 129th(Again). Served as a crew member May69-Apr70. Callsign (Poppasan), but sometimes called(Big B). Was in 1st Platoon and my last 6 months or so, I was mostly on "Tiger Wagon" as well as on oyher msns. My favorite memories are of how we worked together as a crew. None of us were more important than the others and I know that without ALL of the crew, we could never have went into some of those hover-holes, CA's, Resupply Msns, Sling Loads,(even though I dropped some Water Barrels) and even the VIP missions. I was enlisted for 8 yrs, spent my first tour in Pleiku, then went to Flight school, and went to the 129th, and then spent a third tour down near Saigon flying fixed wing. I remember the 129th more than the others primarily because of the "Teamwork" we had to get the job done. My sincere thanks and respect to all of you. Now I would like to thank Mark and Dee Jackson. I have been hiding in the background for a few years, and finally got up the nerve to "Sneak" up to the POP-A-TOP and meet Mark and Dee Jackson and it was a real awakener. I have to admit that I didn't think there were such caring folks like that around, and when I slipped into their little establishment and saw what they had done for Larry, the 129th, and all veterans, I was absolutely astonished. No, I'm not going to get all mushy & weak in the knees, but I do acknowledge they REALLY made me feel good about the trip up there. When they gave me a big hug and said, "WELCOME HOME, C.P.", It was if they were apologizing to me for all that negative stuff that has been said to and about the Viet Vet. I will remember their kind hearts. Also, Mark wouldn't let me pay for my pizza & soda pop. (I'll remember that too.) Folks, thanks for the memories. (Poppasan 69-70)

Robbie - do you have email addy for Mr. Bloomfield? I need to know if he was with the 1st or 2nd Flight? The big "B" on the helmet jogs my memory. We got shot down on 5/29/70 in 495. I was flying with two 1st PLT pilots; Capt. Hall (Grace) was the AC but I can't remember who the PP was. We were flying out of Ankay (sp?) in the Central Highlands. Have tried for years to remember who he was. Can anyone find out? Coming up on 32 years. Butt still hurts. Thanks guys. Ron

Flight, I got an email from a C.P. BLoomfield yesterday. I believe he got my name off of ebay because he sent it to Bulldog265 which i use as a code name on ebay to bid on things. He was a warrant officer that flew with us 69 and 70 and if you were at lane during this time frame, you might not remember his name but you would remember his helmet. He had the Bumble Bee with Big B. underneath on the back of his helmet. I remember one day we were on a resupply mission as usual and had just lifted off with a 50 or 55 gallon drum of water for the Koreans and he was listening to music on the radio and playing with the buttons on the Cyclic and all of a sudden i felt the ship jump up a bit. I looked underneath and could see that drum of water headed for the ground. The Korean guide we had that day didn't notice until i had him look under the ship. He sure was surprised. I told him to check out the web site if he has the chance. Mark, I am going to send you the pictures he sent to me and if you can, please post them so anyone that knows him could contact him. Welcome home Big B. We're damn glad to hear from you. Robbie.

North Witcher, Great to see you are still kicking. Sorry I have not responded earlier but my Dad has been very ill. Five weeks in ICU but is finally on way to recovery. I had to take family medical leave so have been very tardy with keeping up. Am going to attempt to reply via E-mail. Let me know if you get it.

Fred, I just talked to Ron about a trip to Coldwater, but he's busy for the next two weeks. So maybe we could plan a trip for the weekend of the 18th? A practice run-if you will. Gently

Hey Mark, Here is a joke for the Pop-A-Top. How well does cold water clean? A man went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of the state he lived in. After spending the night, his grandfather prepared breakfast for him consisting of eggs and bacon. He noticed a film like substance on his plate and he questioned, Grandfather, .....are these plates clean? His grandfather replied.... those plates are as clean as cold water can get them, so go on and finish your meal. Later on that after noon, while eating the hamburgers his grandfather made for lunch, he noticed tiny specks around the edge of his plate, and a substance that looked like dried egg yokes.... so he asked again.. Grandfather, are you sure these plates are clean? Without looking up from his hamburger, the grandfather says...... I told you before, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them, now don't ask me about it anymore! Still later on that afternoon, he decided to get dinner in a nearby town. (Coldwater) As he was leaving, his Grandfather's dog started to growl and would not let him pass .... Grandfather, your dog won't let me out. Without diverting his attention from the baseball game his Grandfather was watching, he shouted........ COLDWATER, GET YOUR ASS OUT OF THE WAY!

For those of you who watch E-Bay, there is what appears to be an original 1st Flight Platoon theatre-made patch for sale. The current bid is $109.50!... man, I would've saved all my stuff if I'd known that!

I just read where Vietnam produced 100,000 lbs. of "rat meat" for human consumption. No wonder it took so many cans of " 33 " beer to wash that hamburger down back in QuiNhon in 68. Gale
