A friend (Ray Greiner) posted this on Vietnam Vets Only: The Real Reason for Reunions "I now know why we who have been to war yearn to reunite. It's not just to tell war stories, look at old photos, and drink beer- although we do all of that. We don't do so to laugh at our past mistakes or dry one another's tears either. Warriors gather because they long to be with buddies who acted their best, men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped raw, right down to their humanity. I did not pick these men to share my year of toil and torment. They were delivered to me by fate and were the best men of my generation. I now know them in a way I know no others. Never have I given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me into the future. It was also part of the unwritten code, the reason we were willing to die for one another and our country." - George Marrett

Theodore Roosevelt's philosophy on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907. "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Well been AWOL for a while. But, found my way home. Been spending alot of time at the VA. PTSD and hearing test. Some minor surgery on my right ear a few days ago. I have had a hard time reliving vietnam again for the ptsd claim. My memories that I have tried to shut out. I hoping to have all the paper work complete and sent off to Nashville. Those are the people whom think were lying about all we done and seen in Vietnam. Of coarse they didn't walk in our boots either. Always A Brother Alex PS. Has anybody else recieved a letter about Charlie Rains resigning as EXC. Dir. of The VHCMA? I hate to see that. Because Charlie has taken the VHCMA from about 50 to 2500 actual members. Thanks Charlie for great job Done!!

Alvis, Thanks for your concern, but fear not, the only suffering I'm going through with the weather here has been mild depression from being couped up. There has been some scattered sunshine the last couple of days and I even got to do a little bodyboarding yesterday. My Mainland trip was as well as expected. My Dad (85) starts Chemo again and I don't have to tell you how that is. My apologies to Jack Alexander for not hooking up in Texas. Dad took most of my time, not to mention the Freeway phobia I experienced. The weather there however, was very Hawaii like. Best wishes to all, Greg

Mark, J.W., et al. I haven't been on the 129th web site for quite awhile, but just logged in after receiving an email from Mike Walker's daughter. Will send her a short email tonight, and get my thoughts together for a longer email in the near future. A friend was in Washington D.C. last summer and got me a rubbing of Mike's name off The Wall; I've been meaning to get it and a picture of Mike framed and matted, but it's one of those painful things I keep avoiding. My nightmares have gotten worse, and sometimes Mike is the subject. (I'm sure tonight is going to be pretty bad.) Speaking of nightmares, the drug the VA was giving me for them worked pretty well, but started causing heart problems, so they took me off it. Does anyone know of a good drug for them? My primary-care doc says she'll prescribe something if I can come up with a med that isn't contraindicated with my other stuff. JW: What painted rock? I haven't seen it. Mark: No, I didn't know the gathering is going to be out my way, but will go to our homepage after posting this and see what's what. Don't know if I can make it, though; I've turned into quite the urban hermit, and rarely leave my mobile home. Bite and Strike! Max

Guys All unit patches are designed, produced and paid for by the individuals in the unit. They are not military property and are worn only with the approval of the commanders, They are not a official patch. Yes, the original Copra patches were donated by the Shelby Co. but they were a gift and the patch on the website is a copy, not an actual Shelby patch. I see no property infringement concerning the patches on the website. Jeff

Ladies and gentlemen.............It has been brought to my attention that we might want to get the contents of the 129th web site under a "Copyright" and also get the logos under a "Trademark". I have been doing some checking on this and we are talking about some $$$$$'s to have this done. My question to you is, Do you think that we need to get something like this done?.....and........can anybody tell me if the "Bite and Strike" patch work and all the other patches on the front page of the web site were issued by the government?.....I recall talk of, that the original "Cobra" patch was giving permission to the 129th to be used by a Mr. Shelby of the famed Shelby Mustang. But in some cases I see that the 1st Gun platoon patched changed , along with the original Bite and Strike one over the years of the Units tour in Vietnam. I am not looking into this for monetary gain, but lets face it. you guys are the 129th, you are the Bulldogs, you are the Cobras, the Snow-snakes, the Tiger Wagon Crews , and I would like to see those images belong to you, and only you that served under them. Along with the "Stories" that you have also provided for the site ...................this is open for discussion.....love to you all...........

the helicopter in the An Khe Pass picture on the ROK website is " 697" as best as i can make out.captian Chung states it was taken during the battle (april 72) and the reason they couldnt land was because the firebase was under morter attack at the time. Its a reall y good pic of a 129th bird dropping out cases of supplies from about a 3 foot hover. The gunners "60" is in a gun down position and it appears he is throwing out the cases.

Dear Mr. Fred Alvis, I would like to offer my deepest thanks for your particular hospitality you have shown by visiting Korean Vietnam War veterans' website to convey sincere thanks to Korean veterans for the cooperation interacted more than 30 plus years ago in the Vietnamese battle field. As one of the ROK leathernecks, I too well aware of the various difficult situations you ,the US chopper crews have suffered in the battle areas because a US Marine radioman was always attached to our Korean marine unit while we were flown by US AHC to take part in the operations. Whenever ROKMC casualties arose, the US anglicoman swiftly called for the Medivac, and evacuated the wounded soldiers in no time. I still remember a case that I have never forgotten for several decades, to which I owe great thanks. It was an incident contingently occurred at the 175th OP in the mountainous area being covered by 6th Company,2nd Battalion under the 2nd Brigade of ROKMC (Blue Dragon) in the vicinity of Kheson, Vietnam back in August,1971. When we, the ROK marines were about to move a bunch of potable water from the bottom of the hill to the top, a US chopper pilot attempted to help Korean marines, and the ROK marines were just about to load it into the helicopter. At this very moment, a booby trap blasted off leaving 2 KIAs and several WIAs. Right after the tragic incident, I saw the US pilot bitterly mourning while holding the chopper's body over his crew's unexpected death. We all soldiers there were loudly weeping too. None can be blamed for the accident. Another Medivac chopper had promptly arrived to lift the casualties. There were 6 US servicemen working together with a ROK marine platoon at the out post. According to my faint remembrance, there was an Asian-American soldier too. We also well aware of a story that they once transported Miss Korea pageants to the ROK units while they were on the leg of a consoling tour to Korean units . In the attached photo you will see some of the US soldiers sitting in front of the water trailer located at the out post I had worked. I respectfully salute to you gentlemen. Good luck!!! Choi, Cheol-sik ROKMC

Yes, i remember the big CA, I had a .50 cal on my side of the ship & use to use it for light missions, destroyed a small hootch with it one night but then was out of ammo because i could only take 400 rds due to the weight & the .60 on the other side would about even out with a 1500 rd minigun can. I was stopped from firing a couple times due to rds coming back at the ship ( remember how big those .50 tracers looked). I was finally forced to take it off due to it "beginning to crack the gun mounts". Remember the head spacing tool & how the head space had to be just right to keep it from blowing up. Loved that big gun !!! Damned Army>>>>> respects>> smitty

flight...I posted in the Tiger Div. site.I guess what i said touched a nerve or two,and their were a few responses, which need to be shared here,as they are really to all of us.The translater's English is good, but its not like reading a letter from home. Han, Ho-sung: I am pleased to hear from you, a former US AHC member in Vietnam. Though I am not a soldier you have mentioned, I in fact would like to convey my sincere thanks to all of you, the US AHC members who had served during the Vietnam War. I have never forgotten an occasion since I returned home from Vietnam , which I had witnessed while I was participating in an operation about 39 years before. As a matter of fact, I have been seeking an opportunity to thank to those US comrades. Today, I hopefully can have a chance to do so, and can be freed from a burden that has long suppressed my shoulders. The story I still vividly remember is that: At about 08:00 Hrs on May 16, 1967 right after a fierce hand to hand combat with vietcongs, a close comrade of mine in the platoon, Sergeant Yang Jeong-mun was lying down with being seriously eviscerated. At that critical moment, I can't exactly remember who that was, either US helicopter pilot or a crew, I could just confirm that a US soldier was giving an intensive care by performing PSR to the heavily injured Korean soldier while no same Korean fellow soldiers had tried to do emergency actions. Such great humane action as you US AHC soldiers had shown shall never be vanished from our heart forever. I do personally hope this genuine thanks be surely extended to the gallant US AHC unit soldiers served in Vietnam. With warmest regards. Park, Yong-whan: I also have found a common fact that the soldiers who have participated in a war, have strong sentiments regardless of nationality, MOS and age. I hope the Korean soldier whom you had humanely evacuated to an adjacent MASH, be hopefully contacted in no time if he has been alive. Seo, Kun-jak: First of all, I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Mr. Alvis, a former US AHC member for your great contribution. Though I was not directly involved in the operations you had participated in, I do have similar combat experience as a combatant under the ROK Tiger Division. I have long thought that I would have not been possible to return home without you guys' sacrificial contribution rendered by the US AHC soldiers at each battle field. The resupply mission was only able to be smoothly performed owing to AHC's helps at all times. My endless thanks is again given to you guys, brothers in arms. I pray all of you the best luck and health. Regards.

Did it happen or did I hear someone talk about it and made it my own in some mixed up way.Times and como like this, are a real value to me.We all did things together but each one of us fought our "own war",each arriving and leaving at different times. The years passed, and time mist things, fuddle them up or together.I knew this happened but yet ,no one ever heard of it.Thanks man.

yea Bernie, the ship was hovering on the side of a steep hill,a squad of ROKS ran DOWNHILL ,smack into the rotor blades. Was just one of those very stupid things, that happen, and ends up hurting ,or killing ,people.I think the ca was over by the time we droped of the rok, cant remember that either.Where was that CA ?I always thought it was south of lane, closer to tuy hoa, first time there and think i never went back to that AO.

Bernie, I was also on that C.A. .I didnt know the 61st was also. I was flying ( i think) on the C and C bird. We landed and took on one of the ROKS.For the life of me, I cant remember where we took him,but I clearly remember him, and us sharing my smokes. Its almost like he was using me for an emotionial life jacket.Hope he lived.

Alvis, I ead your post on the Korean website, the helicopter you mentioned was a ship from the 61st assault I was on that ca at the time and it happened after we had left with a load of Korean troops. My friends Sp4 Harman and Sp4 Bullock were the gunners at that time, I don't beleive anyone was hurt real bad. I was told that when the ship touched down on the LZ and it was small one the mountain sloped down and a Korean soldier walked into the main rotor blades (I wonder what he was thinking)the blades were damn close to the slope and thats when the ship flipped and went down the mountain side. When you go on the Korean site again check out the Korean version and click on the Tiger Division patch and it should show a menu for pictures there is some interesting ones and shows picstures of the An Khe Pass and 1st. company firebase that we were resupplying.Bruno you also check it out. Lenny " Fire ".......didn't notice any ramblin' on your part. Looked like words from a wise man........shirts/hats/decals/129th stuff/......well no one person was ever in charge of that stuff. More was an individual thing going on with stuff coming form many. It should be all centralized I think, but nobody, including me, has stepped up to the plate........................................Bill Wolf----> That 1000 dollars you and Kat offered up could be put to some use at the Museum that the 129th stuff is in the process of being put on display at now. If interested contact me and I will direct you in the right direction to do so. It's a bonified war museum, and the 129th stuff will be separate from the rest. Kinda like having our own. Best idea I could come up with. The address to see the web site of the museum is , < www.museumofthesoldier.com > check it out and see what you think................take care all, and God Bless.........always a brother............

Just a quick hello. Lots of things happening around here lately. I got a job, thats the biggest for me. Some of you might of heard of some of the grass and range fires going on around the TX Panhandle. Thats about 40 miles to the east of Amarillo. Have had allot of family friend that have been affected. One of the fires jumped the Canadian River and is still going since Sunday. They are saying WELL OVER 800,000 acres burned and the end result from all of the 3 big fires in the entire area may reach a million. Scary stuff. Were supposed to get rain this weekend. I pray we do.

Afternoon Bite n'Strikers! Long time,no write..Sorry..Thanx Mark for the reunion info. I can't confirm as yet if I'll be able to attend. My oldest son is back safe&sound from his tour in "The Sandbox".The other one is still at SUNY Potsdam on a USAFROTC scholarship, majoring in Physics.Pie R Squared?..Elke's annual check-up was excellent, thank the Lord! Alvis,we are praying for a Total Recovery for your Susan. It was tough watching my wife go through that.Don't know what we would have done without the Lord in our lives..Faith Brother! Mark,I'll keep your "Word"study in prayer also. I graduated from IBCT with a Theology degree. It's strenghtened my walk. Rick Benedict: I lived in Muncy,Pa.,when I was transferred out to Montgomery from Grumman. They were developing the "Putmobile" and the LLV for the US postal service. I also played in a band called GNP. Did quite a few Gigs in Wmsport & vicinity. If it's ok, next X I'm in your A O, I'll give you a ping& visit? I'm not gonna comment on the Iraqi Freedom thing except, I was at West Point last night with my 2 sons& my close friend who is a CSGTMGR Retired. We were celebrating the return of my son Lenny & his rapid promotion to Sgt. & my son Daniels'competion of his AAS involvement as an Air Force cadet. No war stoies, just a time of good fellowship, and the food wasn't bad either. I'm extremely proud of our gals & guys in the service of our country. Alot of sacrifice, not too much complaining out of these kids. Hey "Tripper":enjoying your emails. The T shirt is a good idea too. How do I procure one? Also need a 129th decal.?/// Leave youz with one thought: "Freedom is both the plan of Heaven for humanity and the best hope for progress here on earth" The advance of Freedom is the calling of our time;It is the calling of our Nation. I truly love this band of bros! Sorry if I rambled on a bit much..Stay happy. Clear Left!

Corey's cousin, Brent Dan, was a very good baseball player, went on to play D-3, good kid, good family. Maine has lost a dozen or so, between Afganistan and Iraq. It's sad, give us another few months, and the majority of this country, who initially supported this ignorance, will be turning against the soldiers, just as they did against us. Just what America needs, another generation of us. A few kids I coached were in Mosul, just left the mess hall when the guy blew himself up. They learned what I told them, you're not fighting for mom and apple pie, it's your buddy next to you. no body else

Sgt. Corey Dan, from Norway, Maine, died in Iraq this week. He deployed for his second tour in December, the same day his son was born.....never got to see him in person. I hate that misbegotten S.O.B. in the white house more than I've hated any politician in my life. I only wish Corey died for something honorable, instead of some neo con wet dream. 2300 and counting

wrote this awhile back..for and about Susan...i was the most surprised when it won an award for poetry.. Belle of the Ball I watched you cry, every time they touched you. I watched your pain, the drugs, and needles too. I was there when they cut you; I was there when chemo started. I watched them poison you, They were so cold hearted. I held you when you cried, and when you hair started to fall. I told you I loved you, you were still the Belle of the Ball. I pushed you when you were too sick to walk, or saw you crawl across the floor. I tried to feed you things you used to like, You wasted away, didnt care to eat anymore. My heart cried out in pain, I tried to help, not much I could do. I couldnt give you my strength, my best was just to hold you. You cried in your sleep, and when you thought I couldnt hear. But I was attuned to your every move; your every sound reached my ear. I have known bravery in battle, the killing fields of war. My Love, I saw your fight, your face of courage that you wore. You were so helpless, but tried to be so brave, so full of pain and hurt. What those drugs did to you, on the inside you were so burnt. You finally got better, and then you thought to leave. you got the better of cancer, but it ended by hurting me. One week you were gone, before you started to think, of the man you left behind, who took care of you till you were in the pink. I let you go, gave you my support, that was what you needed in the end. I watched you go with heavy heart, hoping would return once again. You began to cry over what you had lost. I was home waiting, the mind is last to heal. You called, said I wanted to come home, I said I love you, thats the only deal. Cancer treatments are over, almost 3 months of late. Our love is stronger now, and your new hair looks just great.

Lou, See if you can find out the complete tail # of that ship. We can asked the VHPA about it or look it up on their page ourselves. I was on that page just before and could not come up with that number, but they have tons of numbers on their site. Good to hear from you, and Little John, you too, and you also Joe.........something around here next year for a 129th gathering works for me. Not much to show ya, but can git ya tons of good ole' Mercer county hospitality. By then the 129th stuff will be all set up in the museum over in Portland too. WE can plan a trip there. Just 20 minutes away from Coldwater...................I think it is really cool that you guys give Larry the claim to the start of all this, and rightly so, he is the reason for this dream, but we wouldn't be hear if it were not for your hearts tuggin' away at us. We are what we are today as a unit because all of you did what you did....Praise God that he gave us this gift. He didn't have to.............We love you guys............

Joe , how ya doin' buddy? Good to hear from you and a great story! Rick B., that's a very generous offer and I'm sure we'll take you up on it. As Fred S. mentioned tho....we should have the first "real" 129th AHC reunion in Coldwater in honor of Larry. Without Larry & Mark we wouldn't have any of this. I motion that we make plans for a 129th reunion at Coldwater, Ohio(or the general area)for 2007. We will still need to move it around the country to involve all 129th brothers & sisters. Let's "gitter done"!!

Avis nice story about the turtles in Camron Bay. I too had am experince with some wild life there. After a bit over two years in country I was headed home for discharge. I got bumped off my exit flight because I didn't have a field jacket. Nautrally supply was out of then but could tell me where to buy one in town for $20. It was late Dec of 69; Out behind our quarters were some sand dunes and a lagoon encoumased by mangroves. I decided to take a swim and cool off, there was about a 12' sandy clearing in the mangroves that provided access to the water. I had a nice swim how ever on my way out of the water, about knee deep, I was stoped dead in my tracks! There was a huge monitor lizzard streached across the the exit, I was butt necked and defencless with no where to go; it stood there stairing me down and wagging a two foot forked red tung (that is how they smell food) to my good fortune there was and on shore breez and it eventually saunred off into the mangroves. ( I'm sure glad he missed lunch that day!) I can still hear my heart pounding in my ears from my last trill in Nam.

Flight, I talked with Mark about this years ago. I have a farm in the country that is very comfortable for get togethers. I have hosted party's for up to 700 before, It has a 3/4 acre swimming pond that we can camp around but still close to the house. It is secluded but accessible. I have been planning to offer this site, but I have been doing renovations and have been under construction for the last few years. Well the end is in site. I am situated in north central Pa. 12 miles north of I-80, near Williamsport Pa. I am three hours from NYC,Philly,Pittsburg,DC,and almost Cleveland. My business is such that I would be available late July or August. It could be for a weekend or a week,or whatever. There is good golfing, fishing, biking, near by. Well its an offer Little John 70-71

AUGUST 12th, 1971 I had been in country for the best part of 3 weeks. I hadn't been assigned a duty station yet because I had gotten snagged to pull guard duty around Cam Ranh Bay "AO" with a fistful of other new guys (cherry boys). That night unfolded as many nights did there; utter black, with cool sea breezes blowing in off of the South China Sea. As the night passed and I stood alone in a guard tower next to the sea, two things happened I would never forget. First, the beach seemed to erupt in tiny movements. Seemed like thousands, everywhere I looked. Come morning, I saw that it was sea turtles hatching and moving toward the sea. Very beautiful sight, one I am happy I witnessed. The second thing this day brings back to memory is that as the night passed, me alone in that guard tower, I remembered it was my 21st birthday. Little did I know that night would be a microcosm of my life after Vietnam; alone and witnessing beautiful acts of nature. We were alone for many years, and then started talking to other Nam vets. Now it's OK. Be at peace my friends; we are OK.

Kim, did ya have drippy nose?? Ha! Alvis, I remember having "shingles" over there. Had to go into Qui Nhon for shots. Mark, I think that would be great. A few of us have discussed this a bit before and I think it may be better for us. We would have more access to smaller cities and rural parts of the Country which might get more brothers & sisters involved....especially since we don't have "Pop A Top" anymore...........sniff, sniff. Brings a little tear to my eye. Let's have some input on this everyone!! Gale

Second voice: "NO!!! You can't be doing that! I'm holding at 3000 over that pad!" There was a brief moment of silence. First voice again: "You idiot! You're my CO-PILOT!" Youall take care. Beat me to the draw Kim.......LOL....I see the wealth down here in Jersey...Kids don`t go to "public schools" ....they go to $20,000 a year "prep schools". The prep schools pay better, so the better teachers go to work at prep schools.....Public school system is in dire straits here in Jersey.....IF....you can "play sports", you might stand chance getting a scholarship.....or the prep school will pick you up....rich kids ain`t got time for sports...To busy driving that BMW or Porche....that belongs to them....Not Mom or Dad. They don`t rent a tux, to go to the prom...they OWN two or three. My wife over heard a "stockbroker" talking about his "bonus"....He could pay CASH, for a "summer home" in Vermont with his bonus.....

Fred A.....What you mean is there are not any sacrifices on the home front......with the exception of the Mothers and Fathers losing Sons and Daughters......and that price is being paid heavy by the middle class and poor.....and with this economy...middle class is becoming obsolete. Sure the economy is growing, but only the wealthest 5% of the population is enjoying that growth.

Smitty, Alvis, I have lots of theories about this business, the biggest point, in my mind, is that no case was made for national sacrifice. It's like, we have an all volunteer military, poor people were using the reserve and guard for educational purposes. The rich folks can afford to send their kids to college without the G.I. bill. Our president has his agenda, tax cuts for the most wealthy, to hell with deficits. Who is paying? who is sacrificing? Where is the national sense of urgency? It's galling to me that the biggest proponents of this mess never served, never had to kill another person by setting their sights on him, and pulling the trigger. We,redneck, blue collar, patriots were quick to rally in support of our nation, and trusted people who never deserved our trust....we're stuck for now, stay and be damned, pull out and be damned. Now Mr. birdshot is threatening Iran???? Maybe we'd be better served if we followed Europe's lead in this, or, let Israel take out their reactor when the time is right. I'd like to see our nation focus on bin laden, like we started. Maybe, finish one fight before we start another?.....It's not the media, it's our national lack of focus, lack of commitment. The least the ruling elite could do is lend a little moral support, a few dollars, especially if they're unwilling to send their kids to pull the triggers.

Smitty, the thing that stikes me the most similar,is as follows. When I,you, and the rest of us,returned from vietnam, something was missing. It took me a long time to figure it out,but now i have put my finger on it ,for myself anyway. What was missing, you ask yourself? The war. There was no war footing at home, all was still the same.Grand ma went to get her hair done every wensday, teenagers were still driving around looking for kicks and thrills, all the boys waited for the next issue of hot rod magizene..thre was no sign..none,of the war.It was out of sight and out of mind, just like today, except a few remimders by the nations media at 6:30 PM.No -one really gives a shit,or is it they are to wrapped up in trying to make a living from greedy CEO's?Does this make sense?

Well Jim, some of us still have a "bad taste" in our mouths about Viet-Nam, we supported going to Afgan....reluctantly...But we knew it had to be done....But we wanted a all out assault on Bin Laden.....Then...IF NEEDED....lower our sights at Iraq and let them know they were next.....If they didn`t "cool out"......Iraq is on the brink of a "tribal cival war".....and we are gonna get caught in the middle.

Flight, i was concerned that if this Iraq business drug out too long we would run into this sort of thing. Is it beginning to smack of say (Vietnam), sure does to me. War on this planet will never be the same, probably due to media. Our Fathers (mine) were allowed to go & win with full support & Hitler had to die in his damn Bunker & Hirohito had to send hes envoys aboard the Missouri & sign unconditional surrender. In my view war has to be that way All or nothing ( no half measures). pretty soon the Iraqi Army will be in control of the Fire Zones & our troops will have to call them for permission to fire. Just like we had to do toward the end. If it sounds like i am angry about this you can bet that it has been with me every day since. WE NEVER LEARN>>>>respects>>> smitty

yer right Alvis.....what was I thinking??? Steppenwolf's 'Monster' comes to mind.. Bruno, unfortunately, they are. People have been twisting the words in the bible to their own advantage for centuries, and even worse, when the words don't fit their beliefs, some just write new chapters. Thankfully, they are in the minority with their beliefs, ( I think)

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) - Hundreds of mourners - many carrying American flags, wearing military fatigues or motorcycle gear - paid tribute to a soldier at his funeral Monday, while a church group that has protested at military services across the country failed to show. The Westboro Baptist Church had publicized on its Web site plans to picket the funeral of Army Sgt. Rickey Jones. Gov. Mitch Daniels cited the planned protest as one of the reasons he quickly signed a bill into law that makes disorderly conduct within 500 feet of a funeral a felony. Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps and an attorney for the group, said members decided not to attend Jones' funeral after hearing suggestions that the group might be behind vandalism at the soldier's home. "Every person in the free world knows that's not what we're about," said Phelps. The Kansas-based group has protested at services across the country, claiming that soldiers are dying in Iraq because the United States harbors homosexuals. The group last week offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who did vandalize Jones' home. Relatives and neighbors said the home in the city 50 miles north of Indianapolis was egged and that someone had called the family saying they were glad Jones was dead. A noticeable police presence did greet 300 to 400 mourners, as did 200 to 300 supporters lined up outside the Crossroads Community Church to pay tribute to Jones, 21, who was killed Feb. 22 in Iraq. "We're just here to support the family," said Dick Forrey, a Vietnam veteran from Greentown who acts as a spokesman for the Howard County Vietnam Veterans. Daniels said before the funeral that he hoped the new law will help keep protesters at bay. "I hope," he said. "In honesty, what will make a difference, is when the news media stops taking pictures of hate-filled people." The Westboro group also did not show up for a funeral Saturday in Missouri, which recently enacted a law that bans picketing and protests at funerals. Other military groups at Jones' funeral included the Patriot Guard, VFW, Marine Corps League, Rolling Thunder and Abate, a motorcycle rights group. Three members of Abate held a massive banner: "We are here to honor this brave young soldier. His courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten." Besides Daniels, U.S. Reps. Chris Chocola and Steve Buyer, all Republicans, were to attend. Disorderly conduct at funerals, burials, funeral processions or viewings in Indiana is now punishable by six months to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine. At least a dozen other states, including Illinois and Ohio, are considering similar measures. Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has already signed legislation banning protests at funerals. Alex, I don't believe they support anything but their own agenda. They use this stage for shock value. It's gotten them national media attention, which is their goal. What makes them, or us, any different from Islamists? Someone preaches what we don't like, we take them out?.....I certainly don't like their forum, but, we can't just support free speech because it's what we want to hear. Along with that stupid statement "freedom isn't free", we have to respect differing views, or admit that we're NOT FREE. My feeling is that people use legal methods to make sure their rights are balanced with the rights of grieving family members to respect their dead loved one's......a bumpersticker on a friend's car....I was not raised in YOUR image of God!!!

this is taken off todays channel 13 news, here in indianspolis....Chris Proffitt/Eyewitness News Kokomo, March 3 - Sgt. Rickey Jones of Kokomo is the latest Indiana casualty of the war in Iraq. His armored vehicle hit a roadside bomb and caught fire. They'll bury Sgt, Jones in his hometown on Monday just days after legislators passed the so-called funeral protest bill that is designed to thwart protests of soldiers' funerals by the congregation of a little known Kansas church. "I told someone this morning in Kokomo that bill's not going to reach my desk. I'm going to sign it at the front door," said Governor Mitch Daniels. Members of Westboro baptist church plan to protest Sgt. Jones' funeral as they have for others killed in action in Iraq. The 75-member church, led by Pastor Fred Phelps, made a name for itself protesting at the funeral of murdered gay college student Matthew Shepherd. "It's profound and divine," said Phelps. Once described as a hate group masquerading as a church, the group is virulently homophobic, insisting at protests and on its website that dead American soldiers are punished by God for protecting a country that protects homosexual rights. "The concept is that America is rotten and our soldiers are rotten. You shouldn't be worshipping them. You should be thankful when god deals with them," said an angry protestor. The Indiana law, a direct result of the church's protests at Indiana funerals, states that protesters must stay 500 feet from a funeral, burial, procession or viewing. Breaking the law is a felony offense. The church tells Eyewitness News it plans to sue the State calling the law unconstitutional. "The first amendment does not say that if you don't like the speech, you can run it off the street," argued a protestor. "To mock the jarheads, I say whoo-ha. Thank god for IEDs." It was an improvised explosive device that killed Sgt. Rickey Jones and so many American servicemen each day in Iraq. The protests are a tragic irony for men and women fighting and dying for democracy and the rights protecting those who choose to protest their funerals.

Sorry Bernie.Just got back. My broher called me & went out to breakfast with him. He was paying - couldn't refuse. Man you shoot the rabbit & I'll cook them up. Texican style rabbits & rice, beans, tortillas ( flour or corn ), homeade hot sauce. I'll skin'em too. I've known to do that. Been a while though. Save the Rabbit's paw for good luck or put them on a key chain. You can even flour them up & fry them like chicken - the front & rear legs. Get the oil good & hot & look out. Man o man wish I was there. Don't shoot more than you're going to eat. Be careful with the rattlers. They should be coming out of hybernating. The males are very agressive, hungry & in the mating rut. So be carefull.Try & use a .22 cal "short" for the rabbits. they dont mess them up. E'nuff Said - Clear left 426 out.

Sue, that is happy news. Thanks for the update. BTW I will try and get those photos of the reunion you and Jim were at up soon..........It's a good day today already. Just begun, and we are blessed with good news. WE just finished up a Bible study of the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon rants and raves the whole beginning how life is meaningless. Vanity, all vanity. As if chasing after the wind, and for me, it is if we go around life with out Christ in it, as Solomon concludes at the end of the book. He tells us in the last chapter that life is short, to embrace it, to live it.......sooooooooo....with that being said.... If plans fall into place today, I am going to do something that I haven't done is years. Well, since I was in the Corps. Our bike needs serviced and the Harley shop is about20 miles away. I'm gonna ride it over there, leave it, and hitch hike back home. I havnt hitch hiked in 35 years. I know, it ain't much, and probably no big deal, but, I am going to embrace life today, live it , and live it different for a awhile. Should be interesting................you all have yourselves and blessed day.
