Flight: Well alot of commo about the reunion. It was a pleasure to meet all our new brother and sisters. At least now I can put a face with the name. I'm asking all of you to help get our guys to Indy. I know some are leary about these reunions, but it's up to us to get them there. The DarkHorse of the cav. had 157 in attendence. They worked hard all year to get the Brothers there. And Tom P. hope we can work to get more of the 129th pilots to indy. It's a team effort. Also if any one out there that wasn't in a crew. Please remember your still part of our 129th family. We want you all here with us. Still trying to locate a 394th maintence whom worked on our birds. I know alot don't post. But, all were asking is at least know your out there and OK!! And we of the 129th will be waiting to Welcome you Home!!!! Alex Past President Of The VHCMA 129th 65-68 Always A Brother!!!

Joe J. would you pass on to Stacey your Hept C info experience. And welcome back. Robbie, thanks for moving....Bud loved his little "toy(did you make it?)." But next year just stay with us, the odds of winning anything more exciting than you are not in our favor anyway. I'm getting photos of the re-union from some of you...and thank you. Please pass them on to Mark or the webmaster so they can be posted on the site and seen by everyone. J.W., quite the "dashing" suit photo! To Gale---putting comments on your photos is very funny. You're nuts! LOL!!! Be safe this Independence Day everyone. Gently

Great Reunion. I just got back to work and my computer today. I had a good time in Hotlanta and got to see and hug my doorgunner for the first time in 33 years. Got to watch someone propose to someone they love. Got to ride on a huey again after the same 33 years. That sure took me back. I saw some woman come back from her ride and she jumped out and fell to her knees and started kissing the ground. She was a bit white in the face and blue in the gills. Got to see old friends and made some new and got to play a round of golf in Atlanta. Man was it hot on the links. Then it rained. I was expecting someone to tell me i could put my poncho on after i got good and wet. Something the drill instructors at Ft. Knox used to do to us in Basic. I'm glad i got away from the first table i was sitting at for the dinner dance so at least Bud Rainey could win something. It was too late for the other table. The whole trip would have been good, but my Oldest brother had a heart attack when i got back to Virginia. He's getting better now, but had to postpone his operation to remove 1/2 of his colon because he has a tumor and needs to have it removed. I just hope it doesn't spread while he's trying to recover from his heart attack. Well, back to the grind stone.... Hope everyone else is doing ok... Rob

the stuff i had to inject into my legs and stomach was alpha something interferon , which had to be kept refigegerated, was another pill they gave me to ,to work on the hep c. the rest was for side effects. prozac, for rage control, some temazepan for sleeping disorders, asprin for the heart, some stuff for blood pressure, ibufrofen for aches and pains. am off all but asprin, colesterol meds and ibufrofren.chuckle, they had me on a sucide watch when i was taking the shots and ask me how i was feeling. said," i feel like pulling a fire alarm and shooting everyone as they scurried out. Thats when they gave me the prosacic. They should give that stuf to football tems, makes u mean as hell. Thats all passed, am my calm cool self again. It was like the worst case of flu, crossed with malaria, when u first start taking the meds.uncontrolable chills, then fever,no engery, cant sleep, muscle aches, poor temer control, sucideal tendicies, sweats,no appitite..runs,lots of stuff, all bad. most pass within 3 weeks of starting. As i said b4, they have refined the procedure. Its not so bad anymore and they have tremendious more success rates now.most of these side effects no longer happen, but from what i understand, its still no picnic. The cost is about ,or was, 1,200 a month.I can truely say, thank u V.A. for saving my life. the drugs were free to me as this was a testing phase, all cost was picked up by the drug manifacturer.I did lose a few friends and almost broke up a relationship as this stuff made me quite crazy for a while, functional, but wild .Hep c kills more people per day than aids does in a year. They didnt even discover hep c intill the late 80s or early 90s. Lots of NAM vets have it, so please get tested. It can be passed thru body fluids, sex, using a toothbrush after someone with it,use of needles, tattos, and sometimes ...sometimes, they dont know how its passed.it isnt airborne.

I just recieved an e mail from someone in our group that has tested positive for hep c. I went thru fed trials to approve this treatment for use. V.A. wanted me and about 100 others as guinea pigs. out look was 9 in 10 die with out treatment. with treatment, it improved to 50/50. Since that time, the treatment has improved, and less side effects. To this person, i say, please take the treatments. The first 2 weeks were pretty rough, but its better than dying.I had to shoot myself, 3 times a week, once in the stomach per week. They had to put me on prosaic, sleeping pills, anti anger pills, anti sucide pills anti nausa pills, chills all the time, sick, flu, ect. Its gotten better, the treatment,as most of this no longer happens. It worked for me,there is no sign of the virus in my system now.The trials were in the late 90s i think. Please contact me if u want to talk or need a helping hand. I helped blaze that trail and am thankful that i did. u will be too.

Dear 129th,
Louise and I wanted to extend to each of you our sincere gratitude for making us feel so welcome the past weekend in Atlanta. My intention was to come by and visit for an hour or two - we ended up staying the entire weekend! I truly enjoyed meeting all of you, hearing of your experiences, as well as sharing the many pictures and photo albums.
I had an opporunity to present to my 84 year-old father the 129th pin given me this weekend as a momento. He was deeply touched, and knowing him, that pin will remain affixed to his jacket indefinitely. I also presented to my sister, Ken's KIA candle (Gently-thank you).
I hope to join you all in Indy and wanted to again express my sincere thanks for welcoming us.

Jim, Susan cracked up when i read her ur comment on masters degree. It also seems you have gotten civilized since i last saw you. In the many positive adjectives I would remember u by, dear, sweet and gentle wouldnt have been included. chuckling here. You were unmerciless at spades, quite the opponet ,with that trump gleam in ur eye.We passed many an evening slamming cards and using very descripive, non complimentary words. it was great.Am happy u made it to a reunion, met the guys and ladies. great bunch of folks.Next year, we will get together. I challange all, yes all, to beat Jim and I in a game of spades.Anyone up for a tourmament?

I want to challenge each of the brothers of the 129th: You NEED to be in Indianapolis for the next reunion, this includes the pilots. I promise it will be the best 3 or 4 days you spend. I will be working on getting the word out about INDY!!!! So, we can have another great group of Brothers and Sisters. Those of you that didn't make it, you missed alot!! The huey rides, what can I say. Thought I was 18 again. Our presentations of the Joe Cline print and the quilt that Tom's wife spent two years making and Gently thanks for our KIA candles and to top everything off Gale and Debbie's engagement, Liz and I wish you the best. To all of our first timers. I hope you finally been Welcomed Home from your Brothers And Sisters. I personally want to thank all my 129th family for sharing another reunion with me and Liz!! also all our VHCMA Brothers And Sisters!! What a re-union.....we should have one every six months! Dancing with the ever-so charming Jim Westwang...there are no words, Jim; Dancing with Rick E. and Charlie(Bud) R, I have lots of words....you guys can really get down!; Gale Beard asking Debbie to marry him...Gale, you never fail to surprise us, what are you going to do next year? We are becoming more and more familiar with that quiet, secret side of you, and it makes me smile delightfully with fear; Congrats you two, can't wait for the wedding(I'm inviting Joe and I); the beautiful quilt hand-made by Tom Pedersons' wife and presented to Dee and Mark; our memorial service for our KIA, MIA, and POWs of the 129th; Kal driving his bike to Atlanta and back to Michigan totaling 24 hours; Rainier and his wife driving 22 hours total; the long trip to downtown Atlanta to eat taken by 21 of us, only to return to the hotel to eat(another Mark Jackson great idea!)because downtown Atlanta was basically closed; always finding someone from the 129th in our hospitality room to talk with; hundreds of photos to look at from your tours in Viet Nam; videos of the same brought in by some; happy but hesitant first timers; more wonderful fun-loving wives attending; Barry Winkler(quite the character!) bringing his very nice children; sitting poolside with the women and laughing(the re-unions are healing for us also); the photo ops; the laughs and the tears. Saying good by to everyone on Saturday, after the dance, was very difficult for me. With everyone one of you I hugged, the tears fell and my heart ached ..the tears want to fall right now remembering how sad it was, but my smile while remembering all of you will catch them. You are a wonderful family and I am very happy to be part of you. To Ray and Gail Gagner....Ray, you have come a long way in a short time, and now that you have met most of us personally, you know we mean it when we say that we are here for you. Make sure keep us posted on the Vet Center progress. Friends, these re-unions are wonderful gatherings and for those of you who were unable to attend, please, please join us next year in Indianapolis. We are all getting older and some of us are not that healthy anymore, so we need to take the opportunities presented to us to gather together very seriously. We need to meet the face on the other side of an email or of a posting on this site..before the opportunity passes us by, and it's too late. The memories we create when we are together are to be cherished and will live as long as we do...please do what you need to do, ask what you need to ask, to make sure we see you next year. The experiences of our re-unions cannot be equaled in any way, they are not to be missed. Fred, Ron, and Curt we looked for you every day, we looked for all of you everyday, and even though you were not there physically, you were there in spirit, and your spirit laughed, cried, and remembered with us. To the new men and women I met...you touched my soul and will remain with me forever. To my friends from previous gatherings...my heart is full of your love. Always,Gently

Fred Alvis asked for some como on the reunion...
Well as for me, The chopper ride was probably tops but up near there was the tour of Atlanta that Tom Pedersen and his daughter Megan gave us. Megan being a recent graduate and art expert... took us to an Asian restraunt on our tour which has some of the best food I have run across. Thanks Megan, and Tom.
Also up near the top was the presentation of an quilt to Mark and Dee that Tom Pedersen's wife had been working on for a couple years. It was VERY WELL DONE and I'd say it was professionally done. It had a big 129th Patch in the center and must have been the center of her life for a long time.
There were many more things that were great to exprerence also and hopefully there will be a lot more of us at Indy next yeat to share in them.
Well, enough of that for now. C U all L8r.... Kal...>>>

Fred we were talking about that at the reunion. That would be the way to do it. We talked about taking care of our hats, patches, decals, shirts, pins, and the web. Also setting up funds for what ever. This is probbably going to take some time to reach this goal but we have to start some were. The non-profit org. is a good idea.

WOWOWOWOOOOWWW!!!
12 1/2 hours on the bike and I am home!!! The a** is not near as sore as it was on the way dowm!!!...LOL..But I did get one he** of a sun burn.. Oh well, it sure was worth it!
I thought Louisville was good, and it was, but Atlanta was the best yet and I can hardly wait for next year, at Indy!!.. I must admitt that there were quite a few follows that didn't make it that were thought of and missed. Matter of fact a lot of names were mentioned and talked about...As already said, the Huey ride was GREAT!! And I am sure others will pretty well cover all the other happenings. It was GREAT seeing everyone and feeling us grow closer in our brotherhood. Later.... Kal..>>

Some of Guys told me they had sent me E-Mails but I have not been receiving them, and I looked back thru all deleted items and could not find any thing from you. Clear J.W.

Flight: Well have afew minutes to enjoy my 57th birthday (Friday 13th). Mark glad you and Dee are home!! One Day at a time. Yes!! Liz and I will get into Atlanta on Monday. Just got the tail rotor blade painted and Charlie got the lettering on it done. We recieved the prints from Joe Cline that he donated for the raffle on saturday night. Also donations from plenty of others including a friend of Jack Gilnmore's. Looks like a lot for the raffles. Ron the t-shirt the guy was wearing was signed by alot of the guys at reunion in Phoenix. I started with one t-shirt for a member whom was ill and we end up with about 10 t-shirts for ill brothers whom couldn't make the reunion and the wrestler was one of them. Well, I am really looking forward to meeting all our new Brothers And Sisters. Max (sgt. Twiggy ) maybe one day before we get to old!! As I look back to 91 when Liz encouraged me to make my first reunion. A handful ful Vietnam vet whom were in helicopter units, but just me from the 129th. 7 years passed before Glenn Pearmain came on board at LZ Dallas. But, LZ Denver Bernie H. and Lary Buller. Then LZ Charlotte with the help from Mark Jackson the reunion's took off. Every year the 129th gets larger and larger. Wiil must head out. Have 50 hours in at work and and just a saturday night closing to go. Don If your working Saturday night at the Zone give me a call. Always A Brother!! Alex

How many of you have written a similar letter home from Vietnam? (I found this one on the web). Enjoy! Dave
Short Timer Letter
A standard Short Timer Letter was sent back to "the world" when a GI was getting close to going home. A copy of the complete letter (from 1971) is included below:
Dear Civilians, friends, draft dodgers, etc.
In the very near future, the undersigned will once more be in your midst, dehydrated and demoralized, to take his place again as a human being with the well known forms of freedom and justice for all; engage in life, liberty and the somewhat delayed pursuit of happiness. In making your joyous preparations to welcome him back into organized society you might take certain steps to make allowances for the past twelve months. In other words, he might be a little Asiastic from Vietnamesitis and overseatisitis, and should be handled with care. Don't be alarmed if he is infected with all forms of rare tropical diseases. A little time in the "Land of the Big PX" will cure this malady.
Therefore, show no alarm if he insists on carrying a weapon to the dinner table, looks around for his steel pot when offered a chair, or wakes you up in the middle of the night for guard duty. Keep cool when he pours gravy on his dessert at dinner or mixes peaches with his Seagram's VO. Pretend not to notice if he acts dazed, eats with his fingers instead of silverware and prefers C-rations to steak. Take it with a smile when he insists on digging up the garden to fill sandbags for the bunker he is building. Be tolerant when he takes his blanket and sheet off the bed and puts them on the floor to sleep on.
Abstain from saying anything about powdered eggs, dehydrated potatoes, fried rice, fresh milk or ice cream. Do not be alarmed if he should jump up from the dinner table and rush to the garbage can to wash his dish with a toilet brush. After all, this has been his standard. Also, if it should start raining, pay no attention to him if he pulls off his clothes, grabs a bar of soap and a towel and runs outdoors for a shower.
When in his daily conversation he utters such things as: "Xin loi" and "Choi oi" just be patient, and simply leave quickly and calmly if by some chance he utters "di di" with an irritated look on his face because it means no less than "Get the h___ out of here." Do not let it shake you up if he picks up the phone and yells "Skyking forward, sir" or says "Roger out" for good-bye or simply shouts "Working."
Never ask why the Jones' son held a higher rank than he did, and by no means mention the word "Extend." Pretend not to notice if at a restaurant he calls the waitress "numbah one girl" and uses his hat as an ashtray. He will probably keep listening for "Homeward Bound" to sound off over AFRS. If he does, comfort him, for he is still reminiscing. Be especially watchful when he is in the presence of women ----- especially a beautiful woman.
Above all, keep in mind that beneath that tanned and rugged exterior there is a heart of gold (the only thing of value he has left). Treat him with kindness, tolerance, and an occasional fifth of good liquor and you will be able to rehabilitate that which was once (and now a hollow shell) the happy-go-lucky guy you once knew and loved.
Last, but not least, send no more mail to the APO, fill the ice box with beer, get the civvies out of the mothballs, fill the car with gas, and get the women and children off the streets -----
BECAUSE THE KID IS COMING HOME!!!!!

Flight: unless there's some unforeseen financial act of God in the near future, I won't be able to get to Atlanta from Oregon, this time. Would some of you please ask around and see if anyone recalls running into Lt. Tom Wallace — perhaps at another duty station, if not in Vietnam? I'd really like to get in contact with him. Also, I mentioned in a previous posting about hurting my back while moving into my new digs. It was still bothering me after a month, so I finally broke down and went to the VA hospital emergency room. Got there at 3:30 in the afternoon and it was packed, wall to wall. Left and came back at 8:00 that evening; two guys who had been there at 3:30 were still waiting! Finally saw the ER doc at about midnight, and he said it was just a bad sprain, and gave me some meds. Saw my primary care doc later that week, and she sent me immediately to x-ray. Turns out I've got a "compression fracture of the mid-thorasic vertebral body." No wonder the sucker hurts! Had to stop setting posts for my new fence, and other hard labor, for about the next month. Oh well... Take care, and have fun in Atlanta.

Ron in the sticks, a good friend of mine, Mark Coleman, won that UFC a few years ago. Mark and I played softball together for my mother`s bar back in 92 and 93. Mark and his wife(my mother introduced them) are good friends of my mom. Mark was Big Ten wrestling champ at Ohio State. I thought I was the only one who watches that stuff. It`s "outlawed" in Ohio. Mark brought Steve Severn into my mother`s bar back in 96. Both are smart guys and have their college degree`s and real even tempered. Steve went to Arizona for college. But I`ve seen Tank Abbott go at it...he`s more of a good "street brawler".

Yippee!!! Alex is working and I told him once I had this thing up and running I would drop a line to all of you. Take care and we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta. Liz

Mark,
It seems that i have to have some kind of theme for my web pages. You gave me that.
I hope this does not offend anyone as it is only what i have read from your stories.
This is only out of respect for your brother Larry.
Still a brother from Indy.

well, what an emotional roller coaster this is. I have wanted to come to the reunion & almost made it. Am separating from the VA due to Medical reasons & thought I might be able to get the time but alas it is not to be, i shall be swamped with other things. I also fell & hurt my left knee quite badly the other day & will be recovering from that awhile, not broken but maybe an mcl or acl tear ( for those of us who are football fans, we know what that means. Ray Gagner, Thank you for reaching out to someone you have never met, you are truly special. All who are attending the reunion, have a blast but be safe. I cannot drink anymore but those of you who do , please tilt a couple for me. I will be thinking of you.
Love & respects;
Jim

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF.....
On Day 71 of the Hunt for Iraqi W.M.D., yesterday, once
again nothing turned up........
Maybe we'll do better on Day 72. But we might have better
luck searching for something just as alarming: the growing
evidence that the administration grossly manipulated
intelligence about those weapons of mass destruction in the
runup to the Iraq war.........
A column earlier this month on this issue drew a torrent of
covert communications from indignant spooks who say that
administration officials leaned on them to exaggerate the
Iraqi threat and deceive the public........
"The American people were manipulated," bluntly declares
one person from the Defense Intelligence Agency who says he
was privy to all the intelligence there on Iraq. These
people are coming forward because they are fiercely proud
of the deepest ethic in the intelligence world - that such
work should be nonpolitical - and are disgusted at efforts
to turn them into propagandists..........
"The Al Qaeda connection and nuclear weapons issue were the
only two ways that you could link Iraq to an imminent
security threat to the U.S.," notes Greg Thielmann, who
retired in September after 25 years in the State
Department, the last four in the Bureau of Intelligence and
Research. "And the administration was grossly distorting
the intelligence on both things.".............
The outrage among the intelligence professionals is so
widespread that they have formed a group, Veteran
Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, that wrote to
President Bush this month to protest what it called "a
policy and intelligence fiasco of monumental proportions."..........
"While there have been occasions in the past when
intelligence has been deliberately warped for political
purposes," the letter said, "never before has such warping
been used in such a systematic way to mislead our elected
representatives into voting to authorize launching a war.".......
Ray McGovern, a retired C.I.A. analyst who briefed
President Bush's father in the White House in the 1980's,
said that people in the agency were now "totally
demoralized." He says, and others back him up, that the
Pentagon took dubious accounts from .migr.s close to Ahmad
Chalabi and gave these tales credibility they did not
deserve............
Intelligence analysts often speak of "humint" for human
intelligence (spies) and "sigint" for signals intelligence
(wiretaps). They refer contemptuously to recent work as
"rumint," or rumor intelligence...............
"I've never heard this level of alarm before," said Larry
Johnson, who used to work in the C.I.A. and State
Department. "It is a misuse and abuse of intelligence. The
president was being misled. He was ill served by the folks
who are supposed to protect him on this. Whether this was
witting or unwitting, I don't know, but I'll give him the
benefit of the doubt."................
Some say that top Pentagon officials cast about for the
most sensational nuggets about Iraq and used them to
bludgeon Colin Powell and seduce President Bush. The
director of central intelligence, George Tenet, has been
generally liked and respected within the agency ranks, but
in the last year, particularly in the intelligence
directorate, people say that he has kowtowed to Donald
Rumsfeld and compromised the integrity of his own
organization...................
"We never felt that there was any leadership in the C.I.A.
to qualify or put into context the information available,"
one veteran said. "Rather there was a tendency to feed the
most alarming tidbits to the president. Often it's the most
ill-considered information that goes to the president.................
"So instead of giving the president the most considered,
carefully examined information available, basically you
give him the garbage. And then in a few days when it's
clear that maybe it wasn't right, well then, you feed him
some more hot garbage."............................
The C.I.A. is now examining its own record, and that's
welcome. But the atmosphere within the intelligence
community is so poisonous, and the stakes are so high - for
the credibility of America's word and the soundness of
information on which we base American foreign policy - that
an outside examination is essential.....................
Congress must provide greater oversight, and President Bush
should invite Brent Scowcroft, the head of the President's
Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and a man trusted by
all sides, to lead an inquiry and, in a public report,
suggest steps to restore integrity to America's
intelligence agencies....................... THERE IT IS!!!!!!!
