Mark, Alex & All. I have an awesome story to tell. Before leaving for LZ Phoenix I made an enlarged copy of the 129th patch and hung it in the back window of our car. Mark & Dee actually saw it as they passed us just outside of Flagstaff. Anyway, when we left Phoenix I just left it hang there for the duration of the trip. Yesterday (Saturday), we were cruising on I-70 east of St. Louis and about 100 miles from home when I hear a horn honking and coming along side of me. Naturally I think it's someone from Indiana that recognizes me...wrong! This guy is along side with his window down,so,I roll mine down. Now here we are running side by side at about 70 mph and he's yelling something. Finally, I see him pointing to the patch in the window and yelling " what unit? "....I yell back "129th" and he tells me to pull off the interstate & he will follow. I finally get to a ramp and stop. As I get out of the car, this nice fella is waiting for me with a handshake & a cellphone with his buddy on the other end. Turns out his buddy is John Dillman from K.C.,Mo and with the 129th in 71. So, I had a nice talk with him & found out that he's already registered with in the "129th contacts" and he hopes to make it to LZ Atlanta. So Flight, show them patches cause that made a beautiful ending to our trip. I asked his buddy how he recognized the patch & he said "John has one just like it hanging in his home". Now in all of the excitement, I failed to get this guys name, so, John please thank him again for me and invite him to this site if he wishes. John, if you haven't logged in here yet...please do. If you have...I apologize if I've missed it. Welcome home Bro!! Gale

Greetings Flight - Ron and Jamie checking in. We have had two very hectic weeks - from reunion in Phoenix to L.A. for a couple days - home by late Tuesday and started American Legion Convention in Bozeman until today. We're wrung out, but wanted all to know that the highlight of our summer will be LZ Phoenix. Soooooooooooo glad we got to meet up with Bill W, Pete R, Don M. Great to see those who were there when I was, and meet their better half's. Cups and Soothslayer - awesome to see you guys. Try to get more of the pilots there? Sent the "new moon" photo off to Freddie with all our regards but haven't heard back yet?!?!?!? Our daughter's flight was actually on time Saturday a.m. so we scooted out to get the most of our day in LA. For all those we never got a chance to say good bye to - sorry about that. Not intending to be rude to anyone. We went into this blind - not sure what to expect. But want all those reading who haven't made a reunion yet to know it was the greatest experience since the flight home from RVN. Good stuff - strong bonds - great support from wives, girlfriends, significant others, etc. Not a negative attitude or feeling in the bunch. So to those wondering about going?? DO IT. It's great to see how far everyone has come from those early years. Who said we had to grow up??????????? Sorry we missed the "boogie" Saturday night, but we'll catch up another time for a repeat performance. Mark and Dee... you're a treat and we'd waited a year to meet you. We WILL show up at Pop-A-Top with our plastic drink chips in hand!! That was in Ohio, right? (Freddie???) Got the T-shirts ordered for all those from Phoenix that ordered. Jamie put a rush on them so should be getting them out soon. Love to all - please keep in touch. Ron and Jamie

I posted this after the Louisville VHCMA reunion. It's attribute to GIB's written by one of my favorite A/C's.He sent along crewmembers wings for all the GIB's who attended. I guess this pretty much covers it better than I ever could. Thanks Mr. B. Doug To the GIB, who made Viet Nam possible. The helicopter was the life blood of the Grunt. It took him to war, and it brought him home. It supported him with everything from water and ammo to air support and medevac. It hauled the Artillery, it scouted , it flew convoy cover, it did things the designers would never think it could. If someone could think of it, the Aircrews would, and did, get it done. But GIB was the one who made it work. You had it ready to fly sometimes for a 0400 takeoff after getting back at 2300. You'd fly all day, protecting us with your guns and your eyes, loading and unloading anything and everything. Sometimes jumping out in a Hot LZ to find and bring back the wounded , and then try to keep them alive en route to the hospital, there many people alive because of the GIB. After a long day you'd come home, clean the mess, patch the holes, clean the guns and get ready to do it all over again. There were good pilots and there were some that could have been better, but I've never heard of a aircraft that couldn't find some GIB that wasn't Crazy enough to give it a try. We flew days, we flew nights, we flew good weather, we flew bad weather, but if we were needed, we'd kick the tire and light the fire, pull pitch and fly into whatever was awaiting us and the GIF always knew the GIB would take care of him first no mater what. You earned your wings in combat. Please accept these from GIF who would not have made it home without MY GIB. Just reporting on the Reunion. Many of us gathered to honor Larry Jackson and the rest of the 129th. While we were at it, we all had a good time. Just for the record the following people made a showing. I won’t list the wives and girlfriends, so as not to get anyone jealous or in trouble. There was Barry Winkler, Bill Wolf, Rick England, Joe Johnson, Tom Shanahan, Billy Perri, Kal Bergstrom, Gale Beard, Norbert Miedowicz, Larry Kwiatkowski, Jim Masencup, Ron DeBates, Donald Miller, Curt Classen, Mark Jackson, and next year’s president, Alex Fernwalt. I am sure I am forgetting a couple of others. If you went to bed early you missed a lot of story telling. Thanks Cups for the imported rum! Great tasting stuff. A few of us can attest to that! All the 129th and their significant others are great people! It was like being with friends that you have known and loved for 30 years. Hope more can make the next one. Start saving the dimes and nickels for Atlanta in 2003. You will be glad you did not miss it.

Mark, Thanks for being there for us all. And thanks for that little conspiracy that you and several others, Innkeeper, Little John and more than I can name at the moment, contributed to with my brother-in-law, Jeff. The “B” model Cobra gun ship, 005, that he built for me was done to perfection and I was absolutely blown away. Looking at it in a quiet moment, I could hear the faint echo of “Clear” and the whine of the turbine and, Lane Tower, Cobra 005, ASAP departure Whiskey One, and already being over the perimeter wire on the way out as the tower came back giving clearance to take off. Rejoining the men (and the ladies) of the 129th was a joy and a privilege. Moving past the insanity of it together makes is a lot easier than remembering it alone. Alex, Gale, Joe, Dan, Kal, Jim, Billy, Glen, Sam, Bill Wolf, Rich England, Ron DeBates and the many others I did not get a chance to meet, thanks for being there. To the angel who held my hand and gave me a hug, thanks. Mark, Dee and Larry – God Bless you for bringing this together. Soothsayer, 67-68

Hello flight, well it looks like I have a page to write to myself since I'm the only one posting. ( just kidding ) tonight was even better than last night. we sat around and chatted for a while and I gave Mark something to put in the Pop-A-Top. then we all went down to eat. it was great food and the company (pun intended)made it even better. we danced and chatted and had a great time talking about everyone that wasn't there. ( see you have to come to these things to defend yourself) actually we just enjoyed being together again. wait till you see the pictures. BARRY, WHAT'S IT WORTH TO YOU FOR ME TO KEEP THOSE PICTURES OFF LINE ? ;-P I'm looking forward to Atlanta. I hope we can make that one too. Hello Flight, what can I say .... Donna and I went to the reunion last night with a lot of apprehention about how the emotions would go. well let me tell you ... if you EVER get a chance to go ... JUST DO IT. I can't wait to get back up there tonight. Mark and Dee are the greatest. everyone was great. I felt like I was home. some I never met before ... it felt like I had known forever. the guys I knew from Lane ....... well lets just say it brought out a lot of emotions and memories that I had tucked away for safe keeping never to be heard from again. and THAT is why I was worried about going. but do you know what ? it didn't hurt to talk about the things I had hidden all these years. because we were there for each other 30+ years ago, and we were there for each other last night. I guess I have babbled long enough. be safe and have a GREAT weekend ( I know I will :-D )

Flight, If Kim and I go to her hometown first, we`ll go to the Pop-A-Top on Thursday or Friday, July 11th or 12th. I just gave Mark a date to go on, when I would be home in Ohio. Wasn`t planning a mini-reunion. Besides, that sounds a bit to soon after the Regular reunion. I was just going in for a couple of hours and kick it with Mark and go. I wasn`t planning a evening there. I`d told Mark that a month ago. Just seemed logical to go to the Pop-A-Top when visiting Ohio. Plus I`d never been there before.

So we will make our pilgrimage to the Pop-A-Top on Saturday, July 13th. Kim`s parents live only 1 1/2 hour drive away from Coldwater, and I have so much to say to Mark personally. I feel now I have come "full circle" on the web-site now. Being in contact with Brother Fred(Charlie) Brown has been such blessing in my life. You might say we went to diffrent schools together, our conversations over the phone has lead to closure of many unanswered thoughts and questions. Also Brother Fred has helped me confirm that my lack of empathy and my brutal honesty about certain things about Nam was not unwarranted. Thank you so much Brother Fred Brown, you`re special human being and a man of honor. Also I would to thank two special brothers I`ve never met yet, Brother Dave Powers and Brother Kim LaVoie, you both are two special people that hope to meet in the future. Flight: Mark & Dee ride safely!!My Brother and Sister!! See you soon. Well 1 day and a wake up. To everyone who are attending the reunion. I will see you there. Well, alot of commo about the 129th, social look ups. But I hope it's all behind us. I respect everyones view. For 30 something years all I remembered was four names. They belong to the first crew that was the 129th's kia's, nothing else. Never talked about vietnam and stayed from all vietnam vets. But, I finally came out of my own little world. And with this web site. I have found Brothers from both my tours in Nam!! These last few years I will always cherish. I was the one whom drove the pol truck on the flight line in 67& 68 and pulled guard duty at the bunker or tower on either side of the front gate at lane. In 65 I aslo was pol until becoming a crewchief in the 1st platoon in the summer of 66. But, know what job I had to do I was always 129th. So, to me whether you were pol, company cleck, cook, part of the 394th or a crew in one of the flight platoons were we all 129th. As I have said on many occasion. Thank You Mark Jackson and Family!! Your Love for Larry to keep His and all our 129th kia Brothers memory alive through this web site. You have given all of us the option to say WELCOME HOME 129TH BROTHERS!!!! And as far finding Brothers by socials! I have found quite a few. But, it's there feeling not to come forth. for one reason or another. But, thank me for giving them the option and giving them a web site that they didn't know exited. So,I feel good about trying to track 129th Brothers Down. As some of you know I was able to put you contact with that lost Brother you were looking for. Well I have said enough. And Hope I got my point across. We all served in the 129th and we will always be Brothers. We shared an experience together that affected our lives in many different ways. But, together we can have that healing process!! Thank you Alex. I hope we hear from the brothers that are not posting. I don't want to sound selfish, but it helps us ALL to deal with our past. Right now you are the closes to my past. So be careful out there. I and I am sure thier are others out there that want to hear from you.

Good morning to all. This is FLAG DAY. It took more than the crew on the ships to keep them flying we were a team and a band of brothers no matter what group we were in even if we didn't know each other then, I respect all that was there. Now is the time to reunite and heal from the that tour. I am sure that is the reason that Mark and Larry wanted this homepage to accompish. And thats all I have to say about that. Be careful out there.

Flight: Fred and the rest of the 129th Brothers!!! In Vietnam we were a team!! It doesn't make a difference whether or not you flew or not. We had the 394th trans det. we had the pol and alot of other jobs. But, we all were part of the 129th. I respect everyone's personal opinion. I'm like Mark!! I want everyone to have the opportunity to find thier 129th Brothers. It's thier option to sit back or join in. I believe when a brother is ready, he will voice himself. Alex 65-68

i dissagree that it is intrusive.A small silent note,a whisper,a nodding of the head.I think banging on the door is out of line tho.I found this site by accident. I wish i had found / known about it years ago.As jim Westwang says, its a double edged swoard. or it was.The reunion in Louisville was a hammer.I went with trepadation, gut full of worms, skin uneasy.I stayed my 10 minutes and left to drive home, crying part of the way.Shrug,it was a healing process.I think alot of guys out there would love to know of this site.A few ,perhaps not.A small note or whisper is all it takes.if it is intrusive, its there opition to back off.But please, give them that opition. And there are many.like larry, that are no longer here.there are many, like Mark, that want to keep the brother/husband,son/father alive thru us and our memoiries, as we do.Iwish i had know larry,to tell mark some stories, some laughs we might have had, what his thoughts were when thoughts returned of home. This is where i found out shakey had been killed is a car wreckHope his family comes in here.Sorry guys, this is an emotional place for me alsoHeck,i found jim westw..here again.jim was a very good friend of mine there. we both kinda lost it after returnong.Shit,it took one year to get this way and am still trying,30 years later, to come to grips with...whatever it is.I personally believe, every single person that was connected with our unit should have the opition,or knowledge,of comming here once.shrug,it might help the beast inside die, for those that it bit. as far as non fliers comming in here, welcome home brothers.U were as much part of the team as any of us.I ,for one, am greatful for u being there.Things i learned from maintence, proably saved my butt.i was taught to checl transmission cooler by placeing hand on it and feeling for vibrations.Sat down once ..somewhere,way out there, checked it as always..sure enough...get home and red xed it.if it hadnt been for that little ..fyi by the way...who knows? So yes,u guys helped keep us alive and i thank you .Damn it, Gabby, where are you?Jim Westwang.......one day i am going to appear and say hello to u,Drink a cup of coffee with you.maybe even whip ur butt at spades again. sorry for the rambleing but i thinkthat opition is important.

Flight...I stopped writing, quite a while back. most of the commo was from people who were there, way before me, and, my litle corner of America is far removed from the heartland...I still enjoy reading the postings, though, and, every now and then I get a note from somebody who read my name from the list. If I have to give up a little privacy in order to hear from guys I served with, I'll happily endure it! Shorty....we had a big discussion about the Phan Rang episode, about a year ago. Dave Day, (Innkeeper) recalls all the officers involved getting a note in their OER's. Remember the smoke show, when we left there? I also recall when we lost our platoon patches, because of the black/white conflict. Knowing what I know now, we should have told the base commander to stick his orders up his ass! Remember Mr. Lovejoy, and how he tore his patches in half, and, left the borders on his flight suit. the guy had class!!! I won't be making it to Pheonix..to many irons in the fire at this time of year. Hope to make the next one, maybe I can convince Roger Austin to come along. He crewed the IRON BUTTERFLY, after? Rick England. Hope the reunion is a success. Stretch Mc Kinney...I haven't forgotten you.............Kim

I found this site by accident in 1997, I have been monitoring & posting some ever since. I asked a psychiatrist I was seeing at the time what he thought & he said it would no doubt be a double edged sword " help some & hurt some". I needed to decide to take the risk, well folks the "risk" has been worth it, I have been able to find some people I knew that had been kind of lost & forgotten ( some closer than others of course), I have relived some memories (Good & not so good). We must all decide what to do. I do respect the privacy of those who remain anonymous. I also respect those who post their feelings & the commo. I do not believe that this site is for flight crews. IT SAYS " HOME OF THE 129TH". Thanks to Mark & every person associated with this page. I will Stay. I may have taken the Mile Marker by now. We are all a little different but we have a common bond. Thanks,Jim

Flight: Well been working 6 to 7 days a week. Plus working on the phoenix reunion, also my computer had a slight malfunction. Didn't realize I have been awol for the last 3 weeks. I have been catching up on the flight log this morning. Well 4 days and a wake up!! Bags packed 129th hat on!! and all I can say is clear left! And next stop LZ Phoenix!! I seen some commo about finding our guys by social numbers. This is done in a confidencial manner. We send out letters and inform them that the 129th has a web site and the VHCMA. We realize alot of our Brothers would rather stay in the background. All were trying to do is to give the option to comunicate with other 129th members and we leave it at that. I personally was one whom stayed in the background until 1991 when I became a member of the VIETNAM HELICOPTER CREWMEMBERS ASSO. They convinced me to get a computer and Charlie Rains told me to contact Mark Jackson. The rest is history!! The 129th is a family of Brothers! Doesn't make a difference whether you were part of a flight crew. Were all worked together as well oiled team. I started out driving the POL truck or setting up refueling LZ's. I later became a crewchief! Take Care! Alex 65-66.

Don Miller I was a crewchief from day one, maybe I was Dumb or didn't know any better, probably the latter. I couldn't have worked on a Huey if my life depened on it, which it did but we left that to people like you and you did a wonderful job keeping us in the air. Personally I think we had the easiest job. We just flew around a shot up things, we had all the fun and you guys did all the work. 34 years later I thank all of you for keeping us up. When we did crash it was either charlie error or we did something wrong. But thanks for the good job. Ron in the sticks.

Mark, stay online this is how I stay in touch with Michael Shanley. I don't hear much about him but just knowing someone else out there might have known him makes me feel better. Through this site I have heard from some who knew him. It really has helped. I got to meet some of the 129th last Sept. and if you remember it was very emotional for me but it was great to know someone else who remembers Michael. Please stay on line. Thanks, Katharine

Hello flight, I thought I would put my two cents in..... First, I was never an actual "flight crew member" but I did fly some. most of my time was spent in the hanger moving birds in and out so they could be either worked on or taken out for a mission. this site, and everyone here has made me feel like I was part of the 129th family. we all had a job to do and we did it to the best of our abilities. yes I was trained to be a maint./crew chief. (weren't we all )when I got there the flight crews were full but maint. needed people. so that was where I went. I could have transfered to a flight crew later on but I felt I was doing my part by helping keep the birds in the air and as safe for the flight crews as I could. I have NEVER felt like I was not a part of the 129th. or that I didn't do my part. just the number 129 makes me feel proud (in fact on one of the state highways about 5 miles east of my house has mile marker 129... I have had to kick my self many times to keep me from stopping and stealing that mile marker.)but I still want it. anyway ............ I guess I am rambling .... sorry .... MARK this site got me in touch with a brother I couldn't find for 30 years. what is the total now 210? THAT my friend is one heck of an accomplishment. if it took Larry thumping you along side the head to get you started with this site then I am glad he did it and you listened. I am very proud to have been a part of the 129th and I am glad that I got to meet Larry even for a short time. and I will be even happier to meet you on the 21st when I can come to Phoenix. it looks like I will make the evening of the 21st and the evening of the 22nd. I guess I have babbled long enough. see everyone in Phoenix . BE SAFE

Mark I for one love what you have done here.I'm probably one of the hidden. I didn't talk about VietNam for probably 30 years. Because unless they have been there or had a loved one there most people don't know what your talking about. Here I feel at home because the people here know how I feel because they have been there. I don't remember a lot of the names but the faces are familiar. Even you and I share a common experence because of Larry and you and I haven't even meet. But your site has brought us together. I check this site 2 or 3 times a day, I don't post that often but I'm always a keystroke away because I visit and read. I under stand the ones that want to just visit and read and thats OK. Mark I think everone understands what your doing here and appreciate it. As for me I love it and thank you for it. And all the guys that do post, I love reading them.Ron in the sticks.

Since the topic of anonaymous 129th members has been opened for discussion, I'll add some thoughts. Having been one that visits often, but has posted only when I initially found the site (4 years ago) and just recently in response to a question Fred Skaggs had, I identify with the "observer" mode. Respecting everyone's privacy, as Fred Skaggs points out is important. That being said, I wonder how appropriate it is to gather and search social security numbers to track 129th members?....as suggested in previous postings here. Although I realize there is no malice or ill intent, this practice is intrusive. There are many reasons a veteran may want to remain in the background.....his reasons. The right to private information like a social security number and it's use belong only to him, no one else. Not even we bretheran. Hoping this entry is received in the open positive manner in which it has been sent. Regards, Fred Brown

Yea, I`ve been contacted by about 20 brothers that prefer not to loge in on the site. I always respect their request of being anonymous. Some are not " fly boys" like us. Some feel it`s a exclusive club, but I always tell them they are more than welcome. Some are cooks, motor pool people, supply clerks etc. To me they all served their time. Also some of the brothers prefer their "grunt units" that they served with, there is a certain closeness in that brotherhood. This is not a opinion, just a observation for what it`s worth. To ANYONE who served time with the 129th, WELCOME HOME MY BROTHER!!!!!!!! You know who you are.

Flight, There are a lot of 129th people that visit the site without letting us know who they are etc. I got a request for the 129th artwork from Sue Hydinger and she mentioned that her husband Jim (1966-67) visits the web site often. Welcome home Jim and the same to all the others that are a part of us but would rather not add their name to Mark's growing list. I hope that I have not offended Jim by listing his name, but if anyone remembers him, post a welcome.

CP, glad the emblems arrived OK. I have the artwork available on disk and can e-mail it to anyone that would like it. All I did was include it in the return label under envelopes in the tools section on my Word Program. I just shrunk it to fit. This artwork shriks down without loosing much detail. It makes an impressive emblem on the envelope. Anyone like it, just post or send me an email direct. Gently, I will miss you at the reunion! See all the rest of that plan on attending. I was with the 129th in 70 and 71. I was a crew chief in the Cobras. I lost a ship while we were on a mission near Kontum. I also flew front seat in the Cobra gunships when we went form the Mike models to the AH1G gunships. I can't remember the CO at that time but he was on of my pilots when I was with B Troop 7/17 Air Cav my first tour in Nam in 68 to 69. Also does anyone remember when we brought all those mattresses up from Phran Rang. My cousin Bob Bryant was a pilot in the 129th before I got there, I think he was there in 68-69. I found this site plus my other units (B Troop and the 170 A.H.C.) about a week ago and so far have contacted Dave Powers (who sent me some pictures today) plus Tony Vega who e-mailed me today and will said he would call me this friday. Vega and I were at Fort Hood the same time after leaving the 129th and spent a lot of time together. Please fell free to e-mail me if you can remember me. I will look over all flight log entries and e-mail all I know. Will write more later. Stand tall and be proud. Howard Call sign Shorty or MINI OIK

Respects to all:-- Dan H. Thanks for the patches. Especially liked the envelope. With your permission, I'll save and use the "emblem" on some of my envelopes. Good job. -------Scooter, I don't think I can make it to Phoenix, but maybe we can hook up at Marks Mini at the Pop-A-Top. Let me know if you will fly into Dayton aerodrome and I'll try to arrange my schedule to pick you up and take you to the booming metropolis of Coldwater.(Have you been there?) My wifes "Aunt Mildred" lives near Dayton and I will probably stay there, but I don't know if she would have room for more of us or not. Besides, I'm not sure if her knee will be healed up yet. Anyway, we'll see what happens when Mark lets us know more about when. -------------Bartender Stone, Please send me your E-addy again. Without trying to sound like somebody’s nursemaid — For those coming to Phoenix and particularly for those going on the golf outing and the outdoor activities, I would highly recommend a couple of things. Phoenix is in the middle of a rather large, rather hot desert. Temperatures will be in the 100's and the humidity will be around 6% (thus, it’s OK, it’s a dry heat). The friendly sunshine will burn you to a crisp very quickly. So, while you will be in a beautiful hotel with real nice accommodations, please plan on drinking a lot of water while you are doing marathons around the links and bring some good sun block along. I use Banana Boat SPF 50. Why, because I have already had one sun caused skin lesion burned off my forehead with liquid nitrogen and don’t want to do that again on other parts of my body. Bring a hat and sunglasses. If you have not been to Phoenix before, it’s a great place but please understand about it being a desert. Guys, make sure the ladies know about the SPF50 and the hats and such. They and you will be a lot happier. Just want to see everybody have a good time without getting scorched. OK, I’ll stop now. Soothsayer, 67-68
