Ray- I still remember every mission I was on. I don't remember any dates as while being their one day was just like the next. I was in the 129th for 6/7 mo before I came home. I spent the frist 3/4 mo with the 554 radare maint co. I mos was 154E Chemical Staff Spec but the 129th made me a gunner in the cobra plt at frist then I went to slicks. I never really got to know anyone by name it was always a hurry up thing to get aborn and when the mission was over everyone took off to where ever and I spent alot of time by myself and I stayed close to the flight line waiting for the next round.

I was talking with a young Marine helicopter mechanic over the weekend. He mentioned they still use Huey's and Cobra's and that earlier this year they started receiving updated models. I checked the Bell web site and was suprised to see how Bell has improved upon their design. It is worth checking out. They call them the UH-1Y and AH-1Z now.

Just a quick note that I talked to CW4 Lee Hendrix AKA: "Magnet Ass" for a couple hours last night. Again knowing what little history we have for later on like 1972. I am still trying to get his tape of them being shot down as it would be a great piece of unit history & having no idea if any copies remain. Just remember listening to it at night in our houch as I was the replacement CE for one of them. It is amazing talking to guys now as the memories are so different. Still he got shot down twice as a new Warrant and so many years later at his retirement still had the nick name. Of coarse getting shot down twice within two weeks in the 129th, he must have had it comming, LOL. For me it is hard to believe that in Sept it will be two years for finding you guys. I already wish I had more free time to just call and talk to the ones I have found through this site. Each call brings back more of my own memories but as I told him the time line is still messed up. Just can't remember dates or who I was flying with other than the gunner they stuck me with after he wrecked the CO's jeep. Than only remember his last name as being Hudson. Still it all plays into what we were doing at the minute back than in our own little world there. It took me awhile to go through everything on the Dust Off sight but it was so worth the time. Well to close, the only reason I am up so early is my stepson just wrecked our van on the way home from the bar. For those who went to Mark's it is Brandon's father. We also have him full time now I think as his mother could no longer deal with him. Still after my wife left to the hospital my first thought was thanking God for always bailing us out money wise. I don't know if we deserve it but so far when we get bad off something happens to keep us out of the poor house. Guess he knows that we are here to take care of so many people, well that is because my wife will take in every stray dog, cat or person. I deal better with little old ladies that think they are still in London during the bombing, feeling bad because we couldn't handle getting her in and out of bed so also had to let her go to a nursing home just last week.. Already miss her accent and comments. The crop dusters have been flying here for weeks and she kept thinking the were German's wanting to get all the kids in the basement. Well enough hot air from Ken for one post. Just can't go back to bed. All take care and be safe out there.

Alex......I'm so very sorry. God has a special place for Veterans and it is where Peace is found. Welcome to our 2 new brothers(FNG):>)) This is a warm, loving, ailing group...welcome home. Ray...I'm still playing your Alaska CD everyday, twice a day, while I drive to work and back home. It's so relaxing and calming. Thank you so much ..it's a wonderful gift. I recently deposited our money from prizes at the re-union. Sadly, it was under $500, but we all know that it will help get someone to the re-union next year. So thank you to all who participated. Sticks, I wish we had done a "drawing" for the knives. According to our friend and brother Jim(Dust Off) they were worth several thousand dollars: had I known that I would have made it fair across the board and done a raffle. Forgive me, I was out of the loop on the value of the knives, and I know how much you wanted them. Joe and I are busy planning a "Run for the Fallen" for Aug 24th...we'll be walking though:>))) We miss all of you. There was an article in our local paper this past week. Said the VA did an internal audit, with staffers calling the various VA hotlines and asking for information. The 'civil servants' gave the right information barely 15% of the time! Still wondering why so many get the run-a -round?

My job as a Medic took me into hundereds upon hundereds of hot LZ's,picking up wounded troops and many time takeing off just bearly with our skins.Recieving heavy fire going in and leaveing.Sometimes we even got shot down in a Hot LZ and had to fight our way out with the help of the troops.I have seen more blood and guts, bones then most surgeons here in america. And they think that I was on a Holiday.I just wish that I could take them with me on a few missions.

I often read the comments on our Flight Log. I am a relative new one on this log when compared to many of you. However, often there are comments made here that we share and the brothers out there share the pain and send in a word of support. Perhaps we can at times sing with the joy over a good thing in another buddy's live. It is all important I can see that. I was reminded this morning of this event that I saw last year so I would like to share it here - it needs to be said here. With so many of our 129th brothers are having so many troubles it seems that this story is very appropriate. anyway here it is. We have in this area - near Nashville - a road named 'Vietnam Veteran's Blvd'- a major road that runs north away from I-65. Yes very nice name, etc. (As an afterthought seems that the Korean war vets got a bridge on this raod named "Korean war veterans bridge!). Anyway - a major long time talked of extension to Vietnam Veterans Blvd. was just about to be opened ( May '07). I was driving north on morning, sitting at a traffic light and over to my right I was looking at this new section of the road where it comes up to pass over the old state road. Low and behold what I saw was a three legged dog running up the wrong direction of Vietnam Veterans Blvd.!! I immediately caught the irony and the full impact of this strong piece of symbolism. The dog was us running against the flow. And I thought of all my vet buddies - all those of you guys out there who did what you thought was right back in the day and so many of you paid such a heavy price that continues. My best friend, like many of you, suffers from PTSD and just finally had receieved a V.A. settlement. The symblolism of a 3 legged dog running the wrong way on a highway named for us is just too much. Keep fighting fellows - even running against the traffic if thats what it takes! Gerald

Back home from Indy after two days worth of appt. My doctor said that there could be a thousand reasons for the burning, numbness plus lack of control over our limbs besides Agent Orange. Also that not finding a cause is not unusial. The PT guys were more worried I might cut my foot without knowing it. Also not wanting me to use a scooter because my legs are to weak already, walk through the pain, etc. The eye doctor is sending eye drops for blurred vision & headaches. The best thing from my doctor was to write done in detail every problems, when & how it started to take to my neuro appt. So for my brothers with the same kind of problems she told my wife & I that even though I think we are having the same problems it is more likely from different reasons. It sounds like the party line but I still would like to hear from more people and wonder how many of our brothers are already passed. Still looking forward to Kokomo even if I have to crawl around the place. All take care!

Guys, beside AO there is a little Parasite that lays dormant in our system for about 40-50 years. Then it attacks our liver and colon, prostat glands. If you ever drank water in RVN. Sometimes they did not completly purafy the water and left some Parasiters.

Wow you guys have a lot of input over the issue and I had blood test back in the 80s from the VA but later was told it is in the tissue. When I called Ray it was over his post and than found out he flew on our bird spraying the stuff. That and they dumped out and washed the bird down on the ramp and in the river. I got there in 72 and do remember seeing hand sprayers being used, but never even wondered what was in them. I do know the Army hates to throw anything away if it works. All my other test are good and hope I don't have something else going on. The thing is after things started going wrong with my nerves it just keeps getting worse. Than Art was saying the same kind of things about legs not doing what your mind tells them to or no feelings. My one foot was so dead for three years I could hit my toe with a hammer, than in January it started feeling like a blow trouch is on it. I am also not sure about my mind sometimes either but my wife keeps telling me my face is twitching on it's own. The things she read on line last night does show nerve problems from Agent Orange but turns around and said it is within a year of exposure. I would have not found you guys if not for my medical problems, but now I am starting to see something isn't right here either. The doctors I see keep acting like I am nuts instead of sick but what if we do have something in common in our later years. So we do need to work together and share medical information. All take care..

I have had the screening test done and the exam by the VA Doc. They were suppose to set me up at the local clinic and that was about 14 mo ago and I can't seem to push it any futher for now. I know things take time but it appears alot of people don't care about us. I know I'm not the only one in this boat. I wish all a great day

Many times I have mentioned on this site that all of you need to go to the VA and have the complete Agent Orange Screening. My type 2 Diabetes and other skin ailments were connected to AO. I like Gale have become highly allergic to fire ants Bees or anyother flying biting insect. I must carry a "eppy syringe" when ever I go outside. Anaphalatic shock is not a fun thing, been hospitalized 2 times from bee sting. This all started a few years ago. As for the loss of feeling, consider this, if you have high blood pressure and have not taken your meds like u are supposed to and possibly overweight. What u may be having is a mini stoke. Have lost 2 drivers due to mini stroke. The cause was not taking their meds for blood pressure. I am sorry u all are getting crappy service from the VA. I have never had a problem with them since I got out of the Army. Please take these facts into consideration or don't, its your life u are deaing with. Dennis

I agree on the list. I have breathing problems and what I have is on the list but the don't want to do anything about it. My VA Rep say that agent orange is a dead issue. Alone you can't win but as a group that will be different. Plus we flew in and out of alot of area's and we never knew if we had been exposed. The prop wash would be enough to ster it up, so how is to say that we didn't get it.

Well good to see the commo. Ken, I am going to a new specialist this morning for both my feet. Civilan Doctors don't know much about agent orange or any othe herbicides used in Vietnam. In a letter from the VA. Stated that if we were in Vietnam for 24 hours we came in contact with the orange. But, only certain cancer's will fall under agent orange. Agent orange will have something to do with hypertension. You can file a claim on it. Email me your phone number or call me @ 901-487-0374 my cell number. Hang in there Art. We all are here for you. Ray take care will call you. Gale if you have pictures of the St. Louis Reunion could you email me some. Forgot the camara this year. Everyone have a great day. Always A Brother!!

I have something similiar. I get anaphlactic shock and hives. I carry chorlo and an anna kit or a beesting kit. They don't know what causes it. I am not allergic to anything I have had the tests, but no results. My arms go numb from the shoulders down to my hands. The Va says it has nothing to do with Agent orange.***** flight be careful out there

Ken, she is right,we slogged around on the ground and crawled thru the brush. We handled troops that had been on the ground and their clothing was soaked with the herbidside. Every time we delivered a patient to the Evac.Hosp.We had to was our hands, face, neck, arms which was burning our skin.Sometimes I thought we spent most of our time washing the crap off. What really, concerns me is the many troops that I picked-up with that chemical in their wounds, not just on the skin. Many of the Vietnames people are also suffering from the chemicals we sprayed on their country. And they do not have good medical personnel.

Jim you went ahead and said it because after my last post my wife was looking on line even though I missed the parts about nerve issues. I see my doctor Wednesday and it will be brought up. The EMG on my foot showed the nerves were messed up but they can't tell me why. Ray pointed out that sprayed it and it was dumped all over the place. Of coarse my wife read that it was supposed to show up within twelve months of exposure. You know better than the rest of us, how about the people who are living there now? That would be something to know and to compare notes. As long as I never see the same doctors it makes it hard to see what is causing it.

Ken,That is what happens you are exposed to Agent Orange.Your nerves are super sensytive. they attack the whole body. Some guys bounce off the walls. It hits different people in many ways. They will dispute it at VA.Some people cannot even use bug killers around the house or the animals.I put down my hands on a counter at McD.s and soon I have to take Benedrill to keep from breaking out all over my body.I carry those pills on my keyring 24/7.

Art that sounds like crap and I am sorry to hear it. I talked to Ray a few days ago about his medical problems which copies a lot of what I have had going on. You are sort of saying some of the same things as I loose any feeling or control over my leg for just a few seconds and I hit the ground. The nerves on the whole right side of my body are going to hell in a hand baskit with no answers from the VA which is what Ray gets too. Have your doctors been able to tell you what is causing the problem? Anyone else having these kinds of problems from our unit? Take care all but wanted to kick it around as I wonder if it is something at Lane..

Read an article the other day, written by Harold Meyerson of the L.A. Weekly. He expresses amazement at the current state of affairs regarding American companies doing business with communist countries, Vietnam included. Question.... how many of us fought over there, just so we could see our jobs exported because of cheaper labor, fewer environmental rules, and less governmental oversight?.....maybe we were better off BEFORE Ronnie R. won the cold war?

When I ask you to send me the video from the reunion that the 509 crew sent I ment the one from last years reunion in Orlando. You played it there for us and it was the one that Simon shot and a long version of our trip there. Do you no which one I mean? Simon gave me one but it's the kind that you can't play on most units unless you have a unit made in Finland or something. But the one you played in Orlando must work because you did play it. So if you still have a copy of it could you dub me one and send it. Thanks brother...........

Don, it appears to have really changed back into what appears to be "green area" over time. That suprises me with all the concrete hootchpads that were in place when we left. Oh well things change.. I believe you are close with your coordinates as I have 13 48 00 and 109 05 50 for the location of "South Hotel" or the main landing/takeoff pad. I think the designation that Google Earth is using is more for the location of the "North Hotel" pad near the Hook companys location. That area on the new Google map is pretty clear with some buildings and road area showing up, even though none of it looks familiar to me now. Simon I downloaded and then watched your video of the 509 taking off. (1 hr for my slow puter) The only thing I couldn't hear and I remember it distinctly is the sound of the main rotor when you're standing right under neath and it gets to a certain speed it would make a whoshing noise that would last a few rotations, and then it would go to it's operating speed noise. Great stuff though. It always takes me back and puts a smile on my face.... Rob

Mark, I think the reason for the short hours in company was that we were getting new "H" models about that time and it was turned in for a new one. I flew one ship down to Siagon about that time for an exchange so thats what I think happened. I emailed Ray with what details I had as I was there then..and told him about the "Helicopter" listings on the 129th Main Page.. Take care... Kal...>>>
