Leaning out into the wind, sighting over the barrel of the maching gun,he pulled the twin triggers, unleashing fire and smoke, ripped away by the slipstream. Empty brass cascaded in a bright tumbleing line, earthward, the sun glinting off the edges. It was the first lift, of a company sized cambat assault, arriving at the Landing zone. First lifts were always the most scarest, I suppose because of the unknown welcome we would sometimes recieve. Thats why first lifts always went in "guns hot".
That day, things were fairly calm,no-one shot back. A few more lifts and the helicopter crews went home, leaving the grunts in a very quiet, elephant grass filled ,rolling valley area. Things had been to quiet. After the ships left, the newcommers were welcomed by the NVA. All night long, their morters impacts ,danced in the moonlight, green tracers zipping in, smacking into flesh.
Early the next day,Dustoffs made the first vists, with us close behind. The pilot told us we were taking in replacements and ammo, for the men and the lead, that had been used up that night. We landed in a cold LZ. The grunts had secured a large area around them.I suppose Charley was resting up from his busy night. The LZ looked like Dantes "Hell",the place was barely under "havic" conditions.
The grunts were lined up,waiting on us,taking out our load piecemeal, but hurriedly so. Then they told us what we would carry back. There was a long line of black bags. Each contained a dead solider, some killed the night before, some only a few hours ago. As they loaded the black bags, the crew didnt say a word. They didnt eat, didnt drink, and they didnt laugh or joke,as crews always do in these "down waits". They did smoke, they chained smoked. The only words spoken during the entire time was, clear left and right,at lift off. Up into the blue sky they flew. The only sounds was the wind rushing by and the wop of the blades.Death was on board. Black, cold, depressing, supressing ,death. The black body bags rippled in the wind, lined up across the cabin.Tight bands,in several places, wrapped each one.Still the crew didnt speak, each one, depressed by the cargo of black death.Knowing we may have smoked or joked, smiled at or helped, someone in the black bag. They didnt roll around,or move, they just laid there. They stared at us.They spoke to us in unspoken words. You brought me here to die.Why are you still alive and I am dead? I am so young and was so full of life, now I am dead.Do you hear my mother crying? Do you see the tears in my fathers eyes? The flight continued on in black silence. The air was heavy. For some reason,I cant remember arriving to unload our "cargo".I do remember that flight.

J.W. just wanted to add that your family is in my thoughts as with so many others. Both my parents past many years ago and still think of things I could have said or asked them. My mother had a stroke about two years before her passing and know how hard it is to see them fade away. Now it is still hard seeing freinds & my brother in law mostly who has so many health problems from which the doctors say he is on browered time. It is nice knowing that I have my brothers here now to share with. Guess none of us knows what Gods plan is for us, just know that he has one. For me now it is seeing day by day what that is. Again to all our brothers please take care.

flight, Phil has sent me 3 CDs of the program, "Inside Out". The contents of the CDs can be viewed at "you tube", most of you have seen it. We all know Phil is in a race against time,as the air show season is starting soon and he wants to retain the 129th numbers/US Army on the tail boom,509 on the tail, ect. Washington DC is 600 miles from me,so i simply cannot go knocking on the " Dept of the Army" doors. Is there anyone close enough, and willing to do that? I will send you the CD, its a great tool, fast and simple. (10 minutes). Another road we might take,is trying to get some media attention. Anyone have any "connections" in that area? TV or radio is best,as magazines have about a 3 month lead in period.( I am still going to go back to the American Legion World Headquarters with this)Anyone hear from the General? Anyone live close enough to go knock on his door? Ron Paye (Mr.,WO 4) told me he is going back this summer, to attend one of the airshows. It would be a shame if the 509 wasnt in colors. Our public servants (read that congressmen) havent seemed to interested, but lets continue to persue the road as well. I have the papers ( in email) that tells exactly whom( and where) this needs to go to in the English goverenment. The English goverenment is very warm to the idea, its our side thats screwing things up. Remember also, Phil flies the 509 to the airshows, ect. for childrens chairity donations.( and ,of course, for the love of a huey, we all know that feeling).I/we need help guys. Thanks. Hey Gently, you have any connections at state level that could get our foot in the door or any attention to this matter?

BOOK UPDATE: Just a quick update. Seems like the more I try and do a final proof reading, I find even more stuff to put in. The books up to 314 pages and still growing a bit. Talked with Bill Whelan who is going to do the printing. We are shooting to print around mid-April. That should give us time to get them printed and ready for the VHCMA reunion and to start sending them out. Don't have a price yet. Am also considering including a DVD with photos and movies. Bill has about 2 hrs of movies he is going to send to me and I'll try to use some of that also. If you have any movies you can make copies of, please let me know via email. My address is in the contact section. Again, I think you'll be please with the results. I'm also considering printing 300 instead of 200 as I think there will be that demand (am buying 10 copies myself!). Will keep you updated. Bill

Ken...I'm waiting for the day when one of the foreign suppliers of something of military importance refuses to supply some component necessary to our national defense, because they don't agree whatever cause we're supporting. Until then, we're stuck with the exporting of our jobs. It started long before NAFTA. There was a time when 'made in Japan' meant junk. We're so far past that point, and so much has gone overseas, that there's no use complaining about it. I just hope the politicians will be willing to run up a deficit in order to keep the social security checks coming!! They don't seem to have a problem with deficit spending on all the other programs..........my time in Vietnam was relatively peaceful. no TET 68, no Ia Drang, no Easter offensive. Any trouble we got into was stuff we started, or rather, stuff the Koreans got into. Usually a few gun runs and head for home. I can only recall a couple day long fire missions. For that, I'm thankful. Other than that, it was LZ preps, perimeter probes, dust off support, snoopys...and convoy cover. I won't claim to be totally sane, hell, I wasn't sane when I went over there in the first place :>)) I have learned to be at peace with myself, and I understand that politicians don't really care about common folks who get killed in service to our country. Just as in Vietnam, they'll spend a lot of time looking for a way to blame the other party for losing, in hopes that they can use that to win the next election. If a bunch more folks have to die while they're doing that...well, they ARE volunteers, right?....I doubt that anything I'm writing will cure the nightmares, if I were religeous, I'd say that God spared me for a reason, and it's not for me to question. I happen to believe that it was all pretty much random circumstance, I'm still alive because I am. no more, no less......we went where we were told to go, and we did what we were told to do. hope you get a peaceful night's sleep. take care

Gale,Flight I first thought I had all three trips taken care of, but the stressers got to me a bit. Over the past month there have been a few. Jan & I were having real phone problems in the apartment we had from July to Dec. My Lawyer said they broke the lease as they provided the service. We paid for the whole year, the main guy said he understood why we needed to move out. When we went back about getting the money back he now claims he never talked to me, go figure. I spent all these years thinking of my problems as the Nam Pandora's Box which had to be flat lined. Did pretty good until 911 but the box is open for better or worse. I watched the Trip Video and almost cried. I still wonder where the dreams come from but a couple nights ago I was back there at LZ English, fall of 72 refueling my aircraft where a hose ran out to be burned off. Than just a pile of white dust with the Plantatary Gears piled up from the trans. By the time I woke up I only could think of voices. There were a couple of gun ships flying in and out firing things up and can't remember what all else. Close by there was a small vill that was pretty blown up after the offencive and remember shooting down at it and all the while hearing the intercom along with all the radio transmissions in the AO. I woke up just after seeing an explosion with a cloud of smoke with hearing somebody saying they had a secondary. I knew I had been there and seen it all, but there is no details left of when or why. That was about 3AM and spent the next two hours trying to remember. The only thing that might have come to mind is it was a supply mission and we were just flying through the other mess going on. My 1st wife handed me papers after 13 years together following the 1st Gulf War. I watched several hours of the debate the house had about the War now, and went to sleep, waking up with Jan asking me why I had my hand on her troat during the night. She is asking why I am so angry all the time. I guess after dealing with things on the phone so much, saying can I talk to the person in charge. I KNOW I CAN'T BE ALONE ON THIS. Than maybe talking to three people who I can't understand because they don't speak good English. In part I feel like no one owns anything here anymore. Like my truck was built in Mexico by an American company (Dodge) owned by a German company who wonst to unload it to a French company. I worked for an American company that went out of under because they placed all the eggs into AC Delco which bought a company in Canada so the could get rid of most of the employees and have the production work done in China while still showing that the parts came from Canada???? I think my mind will blow up when a company in China comes in and buys the COLTS. Last of all I got my computer back from the Geek Squad after over a week. They blamed it all on AOL software! Maybe it was written in India.. Guys have a good day and luck finding an American.

Alvis, Donna is doing better, I don't know if I posted it here or not but about 4 months ago she had all the "plumbing" that was put in 3 years ago removed and all of it was rerouted down the other side of her body, she was sent home with 6 open wounds to care for till they healed from the in side out. 2 are still open and are closing very nicely. but she still has good and bad days. today was a good day, we went to the renesaunce festaville (sp).... had a blast till the rain drowned us out. take care all, Later, Don

I talked to Phil on the phone today. I did ask him whom we need to get with ,about the issue ,of the 509 marking.First of all,it HAS to be 509 specific! It cannot be in gereral terms,so any idiot can paint whatever they want on any aircraft. It needs to be from the Dept of the Army,FAA just wont do,nor will any congressman. He is E-mailing me a paper tomorrow thatsa bit more specific, with the persons/dept name we need adress it to and from whom.Hopefully,we will aquire a target.

fred you an mark an most likely ron, are going through what i learned about in the stess unit at the montrose v.a.its called stressers. it common in all vets and be triggered by simple things. an your right the trip to england did just that.our minds do lock away alot of our menories of veitnam. something simple a smell can triger the release of our menories. there are certain dates an incidents that are locked away in our heads and we don't think of them till that date rolls around. for example one of my triggers is in april when we lost bradford racey. before entering the stess unit, the month of april would roll around an and the menories of racesy would creek into my head.not that i didn't think of racey at other times through out the year but during april it was more intence. i would become more depressed than normal an my anexnity level would increase. because of what the stress unit taught me about the nature of the beast.my stressers are still effected by certain date an other things but now i know whats happening an what i'll be going through during these times an handle my stressers better. its like walking down a sibdewalk and someone jumps out from the bushes an yells out boo. scares the sh*t out of you.but by knowing whats lieing in wait for you its easier to handle. your not alone in this. we are all effected with this. being taught the nature of the beast has helped me deal with life on its terms not mine.
fred i hope this can help in some way.wink 3/69- 10/70

Fred, Mark, and all my other brothers: A little over a year ago, the subject of putting everything about the 129th AHC into a book came up here. I violated the cardinal rule of the military - NEVER volunteer!! lol But we aren't getting much younger and a lot of us wanted leave behind a record. Over the last year I have read everything I could find on the 129th. I've read all of your stories and poems (at least 3 times) - and laughed and cried and remembered. I gazed upon over 1,000 photos - and laughed and cried again. I talked to voices on the phone that hadn't been heard in over 37 years. Many times that book had to go "on the shelf" for weeks at a time while my brain and heart did some R&R. It has been a truly moving experience and I thank all of you for giving me the privilage of writing this account. There were many times when I reflected back to that war and asked myself "what was it all worth". And the answers were hard coming. We all know that we (the soldiers) did not lose that war - politicians did. There's an old saying in politics that "war is to important to leave it to Generals". Maybe that's why Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq went the way they did. And the soldiers feel betrayed. But there was always this: despite what the politics were, we fought with honor, with bravery, and with compassion. Many of our commrades fell. Why not us? I was asked this by someone on the phone. All I could say was that it was God's plan - not ours. Perhaps he/she needed some good warriors in Heaven, perhaps he had other plans for us. I'm not deeply religious in the traditional sense, but I have to put my faith in that. That there was another reason I came home and others didn't. But why? Well, I sat at my desk and looked around and saw the photos of my two sons in uniform. Maybe it was to be there to "coach" them. I saw my daughter and her two daughters and I saw my oldest son Matt. Maybe it was to be here to help them through the toughest of times. And I see my wife, Kat's photo. And then I remember the others: Fred's wife Susan, Mark's wife, Ray's wife, and all the other wives that we guys have been lucky enough to put up with us. What a blessing that two people can come together and share this life thru tough times and fun times. Maybe, when those dark moments of so long ago creep in for a visit, we can hang onto to those blessings and turn to them for comfort. We will never forget our fallen comrades just as we will never forget each other. To borrow from the General: We were young once....and soldiers. God bless you all and comfort you during the dark times.

Now,the bad part of the trip.As I said once before, dreams have returned, disturbing, but not the horror ones.I find that ,for some reason,I have been on edge, even brooding about some of the things we put away in that dark place.I think my drinking has increased. Its been harder to fight the depression that sometimes appears.Work has almost no importance to me,except to show up on time,do my work, and draw my check. What I experinced a few weeks ago was wonderful, simply wonderful, and I wouldnt trade it for anything. Very eloquently put Jim, here,here... But sometimes I got question the Iraqi people.....Do they really want a democracy?... In Vietnam, it seemed like most of them were more worried about eating and staying dry. Civics always takes a back seat to necessity in that type of situation. Mark, I can understand you being down for a few days after your trip. I saw the video and the clip with you siting behind the gun. It must have been very moving to realize that was your brother's seat. To just sit there and see things from the view that was routine for him! He earned that seat. Glad you could share it with him. BOOK UPDATE: The book is now up to 288 pages and is likely to be 300+ when done. I want to thank all of you who have contributed to it - it is really YOUR book! Fortunately, Bill Whelan owns a printing company and has agreed to print it for us at a great rate! Bill - you're a life saver! One new addition to the book is the inclusion of a cdrom which contains over 590 photos in both individual files and in a video. I am looking at printing 200 copies to start. Please know that ALL proceeds (after the cost of printing and mailing) go to the 129th Christmas fund. FEBRUARY 28TH IS THE CUT OFF FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS. At that point, I'll do the final formatting and send it off the Bill Whelan for printing. I'm confident that you will all be happy with the final result!

Fred, we have been getting our share of snow, cold, and wind here but I'm south of Lake Ontario. The folks on the east of the lake Mexico, Oswego, Fulton have gotten 11 feet or so in the last week. I've got a few feet on the ground and some big snow piles, but wouldn't wnat to be dealing with 11 feet or more. It was so cold here when we had 25 to 30 mph winds last week that I had a hard time keeping the house warm with the wood stove going full blast. And yet the snowmobiles are going up and down my road like there's a sale on somewhere. Rob

Alvis.....has anyone asked the CAA just who they need a letter from??? ( I know, a preposition is a terrible thing to end a sentence with. :>)) ) My research through the
AOPA has yielded that question. If we could get that question answered, we'd be able to point the poiticians to one agency and maybe be able to put this to bed....Has Phil reinforced the hard points to accept 'Ma Deuce'? As I recall, the recoil on those things made for a lot of broken mounts. Thanks for the photo's, and the lead to u tube.

To take a leaf out your book Fred......Go bulldogs Go!! Thank you to you all for all your efforts they are very much appreciated. We've had a good response to the item about Fred, Ron and Mark's visit. It was broadcast today on the BBC's News 24 and locally in the North West. You will find a copy of it on youtube very soon. Just look for Huey 509 and it will appear along with the other two. It was fed to the ABC offices in London this afternoon and the woman dealing with the intake of it e-mailed me after she had watched it coming in and said that it was fabulous and it had had her in tears. Powerfull stuff. So fingers crossed it will be broadcast on ABC in the near future. She has an idea of which programmes might run with the story but offhand I can't remeber which. so as soon as I know something you will aswell. There is a good chance that they will want to talk to one or all three of you about the trip. Once again I thank you for sharing the experience with us. Take care, Simon.

Thanks guys, the more folks trying, the better the odds someone will get lucky. Today my vists were,in order, Congresswoman Julie Carson (almost threw me out of the office), the "world headquarters of the American legion"..(thanks for stopping by,dont let the door hit you in the behind on the way out) and a VA benefits office at the Federal building. They were the most help, but no help either.iF you cant get a congressman (they have districts) go for a senator ..they are state wide and I believe, carry alittle more weight. Next day off,I will try another congressmans office and will vist the 2 senators offices here. Sugestions were to try DOD and also Dept of the Army. FAA is a civilian dept,so thats out. Everyones says contact someone else, but they dont know who. Fellas,we aint called bulldogs for nothing. We aint finished yet. Wonder if I contacted the news paper if they would have any interest. Oh, I am going to follow up on the American Legion part of this. I am trying to interest them in doing a story on the 509 in their magazine. maybe you ,members can help in that,,,write a letter.

Fred... Just got back from my Congressman's office.. They need more info than I have to give them. Having read the posted statement don't tell me from whom they need the permission. I would bet they are looking for someone higher up the tree than a bunch of guys that just because they were in the 129th say it is OK. I recieved and filled out a permisson sheet that allows the DOD to check me out in reguards to getting more info on this. About all I can see us doing as a bunch of 129th ers is designate a spokes person and somehow authorising him to OK our part of it. I don't know who would be doing the government authorising as I bet they aren't going to take our word for it. It looks like Phil has been doing what he needs to do and now we have to figgure out from who and what we need to follow up from this end. My congressman will be waiting for more info and sounds happy to be able to help out. Later.. Kal...>>>

Flight: Well trying to catch up. Been working 55 to 60 hour weeks. Bill will try and get the book to you this week. And have to get the history for Phil done this weekend. The job has put, me behind on everything. It's good to see some of my 129th Brothers whom I flew with. That would be Truman Mills and Wayne Brown. The are more I need to contact. Glad to see everyone is making plans for Orlando. Can't think of a better way to turn over the President of the VHCMA to Charlie Rains with a recond turn out of the 129th. The Dark Hose of the Cav. Has 100 already attending this year. Always A Brother!!

In regard to the 509's colors, about three weeks ago I sent letters to BOTH of our Colorado senators, and to date have received no response. So much for representation, eh? Guess I should've put a $100 bill in the envelope.

Here is a copy of the text from the letter to my Congressman:
Did you know that 10% of all casualties in the Vietnam War were helicopter crewmembers? Combat correspondent Joe Galloway (portrayed in the movie "We Were Soldiers") called the huey helicopter crews "God's Own Lunatics" as a term of respect and admiration. And, like so many Vietnam returnees, we were spit upon and dishonored by the country that sent us to battle.
I served with the 129th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. I was one of the fortunate ones that came home in one piece at least physically. I went on to have a 27 year career with the San Diego Police Department and now have one son serving in the US Army and another son serving in the US Marine Corps. I have given a lifetime of service to my country and raised my sons to do likewise.
I now have a simple request of my country and yourself as my country's representative.
Phil Connolly of Lancashire, England has purchased and restored one of the Huey helicopters that flew with the 129th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. It has been faithfully restored as it appeared when it flew combat missions in our helicopter company. This month, several of our members were flown to England by the BBC to participate in a documentary film about this aircraft. To say that it was an emotional event for these combat Vietnam Vets would be an understatement. It was truly a step back in time and a great tribute to those of our Company who did not return thirty-nine of them. I have attached a photo of the aircraft.
Now, England's Civil Aviation Authority wants Mr. Connolly to remove the "US Army" markings from the aircraft. Military markings on civilian owned aircraft are not unusual. You have only to look at the markings on planes that belong to the Confederate Air Force (http://www.arizonawingcaf.com) to see civilian planes with military insignias as well as military titles such as "US Navy". These are meant to honor and remember those who flew those aircraft in battle. As you can see by the attached letter, the Royal Air Force has no objection to the markings.
How can you help? Despite a lifetime of service to this country, my voice to Washington would likely fall on deaf ears. So I turn to you, my representative, to provide a letter of support to Mr. Connelly as did England's Royal Air Force.
I realize that in the scope of dealing with a new budget, the Iraq war, immigration, and the other high-profile issues you are handling that this may seem insignificant. But, please realize that it is a matter of pride for all of us who have served this country and to those who gave the last full measure of life for it. I can't imagine that the citizens of England would think that the "US Army" has invaded their country with a single Huey helicopter!
Please feel free to contact me for any additional information or questions. I have also included the contact information for Phil Connelly as well as England's Civil Aviation Authority.

Bill, the CCA ( the counter point of our FAA) says without our permission (some authority in the usa),Phil cannot fly military marking and MUST display civilian marking(numbers) of the tailboom and cargo doors. I have seen these marking.Phil applys a decal of sorts when he flys, then removed them after landing,so it looks like a 129th bird again sitting on our flight line.It truely ugly and just wrecks the whole idea.

I have here a copy of a letter sent to Phil,in reply to, a letter sent from him, about the marking. Its about " MILITARY MARKING ON CIVIL OWNED AIRCRAFT".Its from,Mis Claire Ling, RAF Participation Committee Secetariat,Hwadquartera Strike Command,Royal Air Force High Wycombe,Buckinghamshire HP14 4UE. First page says basically " I am pleased to inform you that the Royal Air Force has no objections to granting your request, subject to the attached conditions being fulfilled".2nd page and now the problem..WE need people of importance to state its fine with us with what Phil has done with the aircraft. 2nd page..A. The application to carry military marking must be submitted by the legal owner of their aircraft. A copy of the certificate of Ownership must be attached to the application form at the time of submission. ( Phil has done this). B.The aircraft must be maintained to a high standard.(509 is in better shape than anything I flew on in Nam) C.The marking shown be historically accurate. No non-authenic marking or logos are to be displayed. D. The aircraft must not be flown in any manner which may cause criticism of the Royal Air Force.E.If the aircraft is sold at any time, the new owner must re-apply for permission to carry military marking.F.UK Residents .. The aircraft may only be flown within the airspace of Great Britain. Non UK Residents.. The aircraft may only be flown within the airspace of the country in which the applicant is a resident when permission is granted, or within the airspace of the country stated at paragraph 12 of the application form. G. if the applicant moves to another country and wishes to retain military marking, permission is not transferable, and the applicant must reapply. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE CONDITIONS WILL NORMALLY RESULT IN THE AUTHORITY TO CARRY MILITA WITHDRAWN. Thats it. What Phil has told us/me is that he needs permission,or no objections, from us and someone in the powers that be,thats its ok for him to fly our colors/marking. The ONLY thing/marking on that bird, that isnt of the 129th,is the names of our KIAs painted on each cargo door.

HI Simon. guys,we still need to find a way for Phil to keep the "US ARMY" marking on 509.Most of you have seen what she looks like now...like she is still on out flight line. It would be a shame if Phil was made to remove the marking. Come on,someone has to know someone that can pull the strings. A simple letter is all he needs...one that says its OK with us and the government for 509 to remain under unit colors. Now is the time to step up to the plate.

Just thought you might be interested that if you can get BBC News 24 on satelite then on their breakfast programme tomorrow am (from 6 am UK time) they will be showing a shortened version of the film about Fred, Ron and Mark's visit to see 509. Keep you eyes open on youtube aswell. The longer version 9 minutes 30 seconds or so (that we have edited for our local output here in the northwest of England), we're arranging to send to ABC for them to broadcast. I have no control over if or when they would transmit it. If I have any more info on that I'll let you know.
We're waiting for the snow to arrive here in Lancashire, not much so far. Bye for now and keep warm. Simon.

Hey Rainer.. Good to see you post!!!.. Hows the pumper doing? Hope you and Dee are well and hope to be seeing you in Orlando!!.. Boy, I remember back in 67 and early 68 B4 we got the new "H" models how loosing rotor RPM was an all the time thing. I believe thats where we got good at nursing those things off the ground. The "H" models came along and it was like a whole new ballgame.. Just pull pitch and away you went. Heck, I came out of Qui Nhon once with a new H model with 17 packs on board... Did have to nurse it up but only to keep from pulling too much torque. The 17 packs were Korean and Vietnamese troops, so pretty light weight.. Funny how those memories come flooding back at times...Looked at the pixs of the 509 restoration work and Geez, I bet he could have bought a brand new Huey a couple times over for what it must have cost to get 509 going again. Pretty impressive!!.. It looked like 'ol 509 wasn't too far from scrapyard when she was "saved", then again I must say that it looked like she was already there. Sure looks good now. Hey, spring has sprung here.. Sunshine all day and it made it out of the single digits with out snowing... Think Orlando!!!... B Cn Ya.. Kal...>>>

I watch BBC News alot up here in Jersey and when I was living in Europe.....I don`t see them as "bias" as I see them being "brutality honest" about reporting the news.

When we were talking to the BBC crew ,the subject of flashbacks came up and their worry it might happen. While the sound of the rotor baldes, wacking the air, echoed thru the mist of time, there wasnt any problems. However, for some strange reason, since i have been back, war dreams have returned. Not "THE" dream, the one that scares the hell out of me,but different war/combat dreams. While not scary, its a bit disturbing as well as a puzzlement. Was it worth it? hell yes.

BOOK UPDATE: The book is rapidly approaching the "Final Draft" stage!!! It will end up at just about 300 pages. I want to thank all who helped review and to all who submitted stories, photos, and history information. I am shooting for mid-February as the "Final" draft date. If you haven't sent me your "Before(Nam) and After(Now)" photos, please do so ASAP!!! If you have any other submissions, please send asap (if they are photos, please indicate names, locations, etc). I am in the process of getting quotes from a wide range of printers. It appears at this point that we will have to charge about $35 per book. I was hoping to keep the cost a little lower, but because we are printing only 100-200 to start with and because of the photos, the costs are a bit higher. It will be a regular "book" like you would buy at a book store - nice binding, full color cover. I think you will be proud of it. As soon as we are ready to distribute, I will let everyone know. We will also bring copies to the VHCMA reunion!!! Bill

Hello Fred, Mark and Ron.
Just a little note to say a HUGE thank you to you all for taking the time to come over to the UK to meet us and 509! We both enjoyed your company. It was a pleasure to meet you all and although it was only for a short while,we feel like we have made a long term friendship! You are all true gentlemen. It was lovely to share the tears and laughter with you! We know the trip was an emotional one for you all, each for different reasons and we can only begin to understand what huey 509 means to you. It has been and will continue to be, an honour to keep 509 flying! You are all very welcome to come over here at any time and it would be a pleasure to meet your families too! Mark, thankyou for singing those beautiful songs on Monday night. There wasn't a dry eye in the house! In fact I don't think any of us have cried so much as we did these last few days! I believe the final salute at Manchester Airport left Phil and Simon blubbering nearly all the way home! We feel very proud and humble to have met you all. Thank you from the heart. Jo and Phil xxx

Fred, I would like to see the pictures you took over there if you would email to me. It's bulldog265atbluefrog.com...thanks. Ray, I'm glad they didn't find anything in your bladder test. I told you that it was worse in your mind than it would actually be. Of course it helps if you're hung like a horse like you. I told my dr. he better take his tie off cuz I was gonna grab it and choke him if it hurt... Just a few more tests to go now. Hang in there Brother. Rob

Mark, Ron and Fred. Good morning from the UK. Glad you all made it home safe and sound. We would just like to say what an incredible pleasure it was to meet you three chaps - of such integrity, decency and goodness. You are such a credit to the 129th! It was an experience we shall never forget. We thank you for sharing with us. We thank you for your kindness to us but most of all we thank you for your gracious company and friendship. I'm in the process of viewing the video footage ready to start editing this Monday (4th). What I have seen so far will impress. The crew on the day haven't stopped talking about it!!! Cheerio for now.
Simon, Nina and Bradley.
