Wow, I thought we were buying a Huey for sure, but as someone else said cooler heads prevail and when it gets down to maintaining one of those beautiful green vibrating out of trim flying thingamabobs, I guess it would cost us a lot of money. I would like to get my hands on one of those M-60's though. Rick if you do get a number concerning the ships at the Rucker Museum or possibly a list, let me know. I knew i should have stopped in this past year when i was droning along Rt 10 on the panhandle on my way to Mobile. It sure was exciting for awhile, and if Plan B is going to work, count me in. Hope everyone has a good New Year. Especially Supperman.

Boy what a ride, that was fun... the excitement building to the peek then reality setting in. Just the thought of having a tail rotor pitch chain for a bracelet would be cool. But a hole UH1B-D Iroquois would be ...WOW!!! IÕm know that a government has a program to ÒGIVEÓ Static hulls to government organizationÕs just for that reason. Forms need to be filled out and the pecking order needs to be established. But some one with the right connections and a lot of patience? All Things are possible If interested let me know . I still have contacts in the Air Force and a few that are in the Army that can do a form search. To find out what needs to be done. Might need a government sponsor. Even a Boy Scout group or ROTC could do. Although they would be at the bottom of the pecking order. There is a form for everything. Nothing ventured nothing gained. I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart, Mark&Dee and the kids and dogs and the large family of 283rd AHC for their time and healing camaraderie. Most will never know, and some will never care what we as a group did. They will also never realize what it took on a day to day basis. What we would do to watch out for our brethren. That is the HEART of the Unit. I also would like to say a special thanks to: Rick Òthe butterflyÓ England, Jim Westang Ron Pain, Gus Gustafson, Gale, Tom Shanahan, JIM OLIVER,Bill Whelan,RAY GAGNER, , Gently Judy, And in the large scale Alex Fernwalt for keeping the wobbly choppers in line.. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! I just caught up from 12-20 thru today and the 431 deal sounds like a good idea(Plan B). Let her still fly if she can! Even tho my wife says I suffer from "CRS" syndrome, you know "Can't Remember Sh--" I do recall that once an a/c reached a certain age the year designation was taken from number, not sure if I ever knew reason but remember flying some with that numbering. Anyway, hence the 0- in 431 number. Tim V. I will be in touch shortly with phone number etc. I sure hope we can get together on your trip to NC. Been way too long. Maybe we could even get Freddie to come over from the state capitol. Again everyone have a happy and prosperous new year.

Afternoon gentlemen. I had done some paint work on an old D or H model huey a few years ago for a static display. At the time, I tried (unsuccessfully) to find out which unit it was assigned to during Vietnam. I recently found some info that leads me to think it was yours (129th) from 66-68. It is tail # 65-12776. It is now a static display for a National Guard Aviation Maintenance facility in Groton, CT. I could probably send a digital photo if anyone is interested.

Flight, I received the following from the Gent in regards to 431>>>>>>>>> she's not flyable -the certification process is quite involved -ferrying is not a good idea as the main rotor blades head and scissors/sleeve /mast are all missing<<<<<<<<<< They also would want 10% down with 1/2 paid in 30 days. So it looks like plan B is the only option. I like the idea of it flying for a good cause. If the Ausies get it maybe we could adopt it. Take up a collection to help them get it flying again, or maybe help them get some fire fighting equipment. Sure was fun playing with this. Kind of like a kid before Christmas. Love and Brotherhood. I am back the dam pc your right Gale. ***************Fred I agree 431 will help the people in Australia and we can you the money in the 129th fund. the price of the ship went up to 39,900 I think the big bone yard down here near Tucson I heard had Hueys for 10,000 if we are still intrested. I do think if the fund continues we need a board and go non-profit org. That way the donations are tax deductable an we can get more money that to help our brothers and sisters in need. Also to do what we want Example a uh-1. This is my input and suggestion. I will be there for what ever we decide.**********

I tend to agree with Fred & Tom. I would be satisfied finding one in a boneyard and haul it to the Pop A Top (if Mark has a place for it) and dress it up as a 129th. There would be no sense in having one that's flyable and then let her set. It might be hard to "organize", as Fred said, since we are scattered all over the country. Also, it may not be fair to some of you guys out west that may never make it to the "TOP". Maybe we can discuss this more at the "TOP" in the spring or at LZ Atlanta. Rick, have you tried re-booting that sucker? These PC's can be a headache! Gale

When i first said I would kick in the $185, I also mentioned parts etc & it seems as opinions come in, it would be very expensive to maintain it & difficult to get parts if not impossible. therefore as cooler heads prevail(plan B) is probably better for all concerned. I know my first thoughts are always to be selfish & get something without thinking??? Later; Jim

Fred, I second the motion on Plan B. As much as it would be great to have 431 back with us again, giving her a chance to keep flying would be a good thing. IÕm retired now sitting here in this museum I call home. IÕd a lot rather be out flying but that isnÕt going to happen. Any Flight Surgeon would take one look and put a big Red ÒXÓ in my logbook. I wonÕt fly again but maybe I can think of 431 saving lives and property down under and be with her a little bit. I got to do some flying in Australia in 1979 and while those blokes fly a little different, they donÕt do bad at all. Gauging by their needs then and now, they could sure use all that help they could get. It would be great to think that as we pass from the scene, a piece of our history continues. hate to bust any bubbles here, but no company or corporation can ,or will, donate funds to anything that doesnt have a tax free number. What that means is,there must be a 129th group set up.as a non profit club, with state approved tax free number so anyone making donations can tax claim .There must be a board of directors, mailing addy ect, ect, ect. One more thought here also.My girlfriend lives in australia. i mentioned this to her and thhe fact an aussie firefighting groups wants it.Her response was..there are 43 wildfires going on in my state alone, right now. How wonderful it would be if that helicopter could come here and continue to save more lives. That,my friends, made me sit back and think. if u guys truely want the ship. fine, i will throw in my bit also, but,if it isnt possiable, what about thinking towards helping out the aussies and let the bird live agian,as it was intended, saving lives. nothing more might be needed than moral support from us and i am sure they would be thrilled to know the history as would aussie nam vets from the chu che area. I like plan A (keeping it here} but plan B aint bad either.Beats the heck out of it sitting in a junk yard somewhere.

Flight, I have remained quiet on the 431 for a few days to see what the interest level is for buying her. Time for my two cents. I have sent Richard an e-mail asking what shape the 431 is in and if we would have time to raise the $$$$$ required. I believe we should do some serious thinking if we want to do this. 1) I think that even if she is now flyable that there is no way we could keep her that way. It was hard enough to keep them up with the vast military supply chain. If we decide to do this it should be as a non-flying museum. We could move her on a flat bed trailer and use her in parades, special events, VHCMA reunion etc. It would be better if she could be kept indoors. We would need more than the asking price. Storage, insurance, etc. 2) If we decide to do this. I will check several places here in Indy to see if we could store her there. a) Air National Guard, b)Stout reserve field, and c)there is a gent who has a military museum here in Indy. He also has the means to transport her. 3) I think we should raise a minimum of $50,000 if we decide to buy her. That would give us a reserve fund for shipping her wherever. It would also allow us to get liability insurance on her. You know people (including us) are going to want to crawl all over her. What air crew member is not going to want to climb on top and check out the rotor head. Who amongst us old farts is not going to try and climb up on the engine deck????? We also need to develop a means of raising on going funds to maintain and transport her in the future 3) We may want to check into forming a non-for profit organization. Any lawyers on here that could advise us?? 4) If we do this I would be willing to set up a Iron Butterfly Trust Fund to handle all $$$ 5) I do not think we should divide the cost of 431 by the no of personnel on the net. Some can not afford $200 but may help in other ways. I suggest we who are interested it this project pledge to raise a specific amount of $$. We can approach friends, VVA and other organizations. There are a lot of guys out there who owe their lives to a Huey and I am sure they would be willing to chip in a few $$ to help. We just need to get the word out. I think we would be surprised to see how many would be interested in this project. 6) If we are serious and the 431 is available we need to form a group that wants to make this happen, come up with a plan and "Go for it." Not just try, "but DO IT." 7) If we do decide to "Go For It", I pledge that I will raise a minimum of $1,000 for The Iron Butterfly Fund. 8) I also will get my cousin, who did the paint job on my scooter to do the nose art and put her back in Viet Nam dress. What say all. Love and Brotherhood Ron Paye PS. I hope every one had a great Christmas and are on short final for the Best Year ever.

Whoooaa Flight, let's not get too excited. As I told Rick, I was half kidding & half serious when I brought this up. I'm sure there would have to be sales tax paid to someone, hauling, insurance, etc. Does anyone know anyone in politics that could possibly help? Maybe get the cost down or get it donated? Rick, I do remember an incident from 1969. Not sure if it was August or not. My AC was WO Jim Sikes. Not sure who the peter pilot was. We were on a resupply misson that day and had just picked up one of those gigantic balls of concertina wire and was on our way to one of the Korean OPÕs. Then we heard on the radio that one of our ships was shot down and Mr. Sikes said we were going over there and to let him know when we close enough to where the Koreans wanted the wire. The problem was he never slowed down very much and when he punched that wire off you should have seen the guys at that OP scrambling to get out of the way. We then became Chalk 1 of the mission to retrieve the ship and crew. This mission went on into the night and I saw more green tracers coming at me than I ever had before. When we had to refuel, Major Cooper was there and he got into the ACÕs seat and the pp was bumped out and Sikes was now the pp. I am not sure if this was the Iron Butterfly or not. I know I was pissed because Major Cooper got a DFC for the mission and he really didnÕt fly the ship for more than 5 minutes. Mr. Sikes convinced me to let it go (probably for the best). Maybe someone else could confirm what ship was down. Rob

Rick, the number on my ship was 6616265. THE JUDGE. It's the same ship Larry was crewing and I was the gunner on with him. I later became the crewchief of 265. I don't remember 431 getting shot down in August of 69, but then again there are a lot of things i don't remember from that year. Rob

hi rick, no chains yet but Ill ask phil -the hellhole seat is free-Ill mail it along here this week to you guys -Ill also look for other trinkets off her might just be some access panels and such but theres some loose parts about -wee have had her almost 8 years now. I fly crewchief and Im also the administrator for the service - phils a member of the vhcma? crewmembers-Im 40 -I support you guys . The nice thing is 431 will fly again wherever she goes we have the paperwork -rihgt now theres a firebomber outfit in australia looking at her. I wish we could donate her off to you guys unfortunatly thats how our service operates is from revenues from our exceess( gas money). We fly free of charge on SAR missions. I also can tell you that your IC box is being used in the primary helicopter we fly another vietnam vet from the 25th of the 25th whioch was shot down in august of 69 -strange /? do you recall the shoot down of 431 in 69? she looked pretty intact when she was hooked home ...-Richard writes:********************I wasn't there then does anybody remember that incident? Rick, that's great that you found your ship. I went to the web site and saw it. I hope you get the picture that you asked for. I wish i knew where mine was. Probably still at Rucker or purchased and dismantled. Last report was that it was at Rucker somewhere. Maybe it's a training model now. Oh well, if you get the picture, bring it with you to Atlanta if you are coming. Hope everyone has a happy New Year. Rob.

Thanks for serving guys -we have been using 431 as a trainer for the last 7 years for our search and rescue teams here in Bangor Maine -she is actually still in the condition the military preserved her in 96 for shipment to Davis Monthan -happily rescued from that fate -The goldbook fills in her history before a navy retype of her overhaul and 74 departure by the 30th trans company. The ship is solid and well loved by her vietnam era mechanic Phil Flagg (crashed in 63-08827-medal of valor recipient). Her head main rotor blades /42 box and compass/clock are on our primary rescue helicopter -I have a picture of this aircraft /the iron butterfly in the bent and battered rotors by signal pubs. -just having been hooked home- keep em flying -Richard Bowie/ Director DEEMI

Hello Flight, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and got some or all of what they were asking/hoping for. I spent most of my day shoveling snow. I would have used my snowblower, but it is quite old and decided it isn't going to start any more. I'm looking at local stores for one today because living a few miles from Lake Ontario, i get blasted with Lake effect snow every year. I'm getting too damn old to be shoveling a 100 foot driveway. Ray Gagner, it was nice talking to you the other day when you had dialed the wrong number and were asking for Mary. As i said, i thought you were kidding with me so i asked if you were looking for Merry Christmas. I love you brother and you know i'll be keeping in touch with you now that we've found each other on this Wonderful site that Larry's little brother set up for everyone. Mark it was great talking to you the other day. I can always tell who i am talking to as soon as you say the first word. I always feel close to Larry when I talk to you and probably always will. I wish i would have had a camera i could have sent to you. I read your last posting about the desk and i thought that was great, and they way it was all done brought tears to my eyes. I wish I could find something like that with my brother's name on it, but doesn't seem too likely. Well, i think i've wasted enough space and will get back to work. Love you all.. Rob

I seen that to Don but on the descrition of item it has 67-17431 an they talk about having the log books which would have the whole number right. Who knows what the Guard did with it. Is their a way of calling the owner. I couldn't find it. I am sure e-bay is not going to give that info out. I copied the pics and descrition. I see no visual parts that are orginal. I have a pic of Larry standing by the Iron Butterfly When he first got there.I am sorry about rambling here, just got excited. I hope everybody had a safe and merry Christmas. We still have New years to get through be careful out there.

OOPS, I just went back and looked at the site again ........ I don't know why the tail has "0" -17431 the discription has the tail # as 67-17431 so it looks like I jumped before I looked. so it is our bird. sorry Mark, I didn't win the powerball last night. if I had we would have one of our own back.

the page that has 431 is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1875312075&category=26428 but I am wondering if it is the correct bird. the tail # on Iron Butterfly was 67-17431 or as it would have been put on the tail 7-17431, this one has 0-17431 which I would take as probably 1970 or 1980 not 1967. "just a thought" Later, Don

.....ALL of the Jacksons want to wish all of this wonderful family of the 129th a glorious happy Holidays and a great New Year, and that includes Larry. I will tell you why I can include LArry's name also in a minute................BUT FIRST......would'nt it be nice to have $36,900 to get the #431 that is for sale on ebay.......WOW.....that would really look good at the Pop-A-Top. I checked our records of our ships on our page and the 431 flew over 1600 hours with the 129th from 4/68-6/69....as a matter of fact, I think that I have heard others on here talk about the 431 in some commo in here.....Larry probably flew next to it on some missions...............WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!........imagine that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........back to this Christmas. I hope all have had a wonderful day with your loved ones. I sure have......along with getting 9 inches of snow last night......I am sure lots of lil' ones in this AO woke up believeing in Santa this year when they saw the snow. I did;-)))).....let me just fill you in on why I, feel like a 4 year old, at the age of 51 this Christmas.................First it was announced to us by our second daughter and our son-in-law that we are expecting a new Grand Child in June....a complete surprise to Dee and I...absolutly wonderful. That will make 3 grandkids then....very excited about that.......... getting back to Larry saying Marry Christmas to you also.... now let me tell you this...........My wife, has giving me one of the , if not, the best gifts I have even received on Christmas. She gave me a piece of Larry.......let me explain...........Dee works as an aid for the multible handicapped in the local county system main streaming students into regular classes. About a month ago, she came home and said that she had taken a child into a class and sat down at a desk. She notice that someone had carved their name in the back of the chair in front of her and her student. After looking at it close, she noticed that the name on the back of the chair was "LARRY JACKSON"..........Dee told me about it and I jokeingly mentioin that that would be neat to have that chair. I also have a couple of buddies who are also teachers in the system and put them on the "MISSION" of getting that desk out of the school for me...........a month went by and I had forgotten about the whole thing....................my wonderful wife had made arrangements through the proper channels, including the superintendent of the school to let her have the desk to give me for Christmas....the day before Christmas the school can into the Pop-A-Top and delivered the desk with Larry's name carved in it. It has to be at least 40 years old because Larry quit school at the age of 16 in 1964. and worked for my dad up until he joined the Army in 1968........so you see, that is why I can say to all of you that "LARRY" also says Marry Chrismas to all of you too. He is here with me on the back of the desk. That desk back could of been sold, stollen, lost, replaced, repaired in the last 40 years, but there it was for me........beleive me my brothers and sisters, Larry, and all the others that we can not see, or touch, anymore from the 129th, are here with us and see and hear what we do and say. They are here...................................the LORD has blessed me with wonderful people in my life. Why??/...I dont know, but I will "EARN" what I have recieved with continued work to keep all of them, and you, alive in the hearts and minds of all forever.........Happy Holidays from Larry...........always a brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sent to me and I'm posting it exactly as I got it. "Scooter" Hi guys, I'm passing this along, a fixed wing friend sent it to me..........den Dennis; Mike Larkin graduated with USAF Pilot Training Class 61-F, one of the last classes to include Aviation Cadets, in March 1961. Mike wrote the original poem about a fighter pilot. Army Helicopter Pilots - One in a Million. - Mike Larkin/Curt Knapp I think I've known a million lads, who say they love the sky; Who'd all be aviators, and not afraid to fly! For Duty, Honor, Country, their courage I admire! But it takes more than courage, son, to get to be a flyer. When you are only twelve years old, of course you want to fly! And tho' you know not what is Death, you're not afraid to die. But of the million, more or less, all must have perfect eyes; So only half a million now, can dream of future skies. Then comes high school, science, math; some choose the easy way: Football, cars, and dating girls; teen pleasures hold their sway. And of the quarter million left, one half go on to schools; The other half will dream and drift, and never learn the rules. Now comes the day of testing, eight hours of sitting Hell; On every subject known to man, four- fifths will not do well. The one in five who pass this test, apply for flying schools, The Application Boards will now eliminate the fools. Then comes two days of nakedness, flight surgeons poke and prod; To pass this flying physical one needs to be a God! And now, five hundred lucky souls will start their Pre-Flight days; Endure demerits, hunger, cold, as upperclassmen haze. One-half survive this mental game, and go to Primary schools, But only half will hack the course, move on to Basic rules. Two hundred fifty now will try to pass those Basic tests; Formation flight soon separates, the " tiger" from the rest. One hundred twenty five will then pin on those pilot wings; The best become hot Cobra jocks; the rest fly other things. Some will die while learning those essential combat skills; Some will die in combat, some will score their "kills". But they have learned a lesson, sometimes lost on you and me; We must always fight for Freedom, because Freedom's never free! He's a knight in shining armor, that the cruel tyrants fear; He's that deadly drop of venom on the tip of Freedom's spear. Engaging him in battle is a course that only fools would choose; He's the world's fiercest warrior, for he has the most to lose. So when you see that helicopter pilot, standing at the bar; Taking out the garbage, or tuning up his car. You'd best walk up and offer him your thanks, extend your hand; He's that rare "one in a million" who protected this sacred land.

Flight, Alan Veilleux, Welcome aboard. Good to have you with us once again. I remember WO Camron. I was in the Cobra Platoon so never really got to know him. Our plt. maint. officer was Bill Jeans. He probably remembers him. Bill checks in here occasionally. Ray, sorry I missed your call. I will be gone this weekend. I will be leaving for Michigan and Wisconsin in the morning. I want to take a minute to wish Everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Super New Year. My wish is for the "Best" for you all. I look forward to meeting many new faces this coming year. A belated Happy Birthday to Fred. First time I've been on since the "ICE STORM THAT ATE NORTH CAROLINA". 48 hours was good. Our power was out until Tuesday afternoon. Once again my opinion that camping out sucks was confirmed. Nine trees down over our only exit road and since it is a private road the county would not touch it. Ten guys from street and their chain saws and several 4x4 pickups did the trick. That was fun since we rarely get to use our 4 wheel drive. My father is still not doing well and my family would appriciate your prayers. Thanks to all and have a safe and happy holiday season.

Well dear friends, you should be proud of yourselves! We collected $400 for our 129th friend and brother as a holiday gift. The money will be used to send he and his wife to the re-union in Atlanta. I'm not going to say who it is, just trust that we did the best we could, and are happy with the decision. Whether this person decides to let himself be known or not is entirely up to him. We certainly understand if he quietly accepts our gift. He will be sent a certificate with the 129th patch on it and a note that states the gift is from all of us, compliments of a gentleman who never writes on the web, but is here all of the time. Our friend and brother is going to be very happy about our gift, so you feel happy too. Thank you again. Always there for our Veterans-Gently

Mark,Ron,Fred.....sounds like a good time at the ole "TOP". Wish I could have been there. I've got it on the calender for next year! This would be good time to think about a mini-reunion at the "TOP" come Spring (pre-Atlanta)....any takers? Rick, have you (or anyone else) made reservations at Atlanta yet? I tried this morn, but, they say there is no listing for it yet. I called the toll # and direct. I told them I'll try again after the 1st of the year. Gale

.............Hellllllooooooooo....my friends..........off for the night.....home, and just ate a fried bologna sandwich........yummy!!!!!!!!!...........future son-in-law works the night shift now. he turned 21 couple of weeks ago.........ats good fer Dee and I. We actually can spend a few minutes noddin' in and out on each other as we set in the chairs with the boob tube on!!!!!!!!!!.......AAAAHHHHHHHHH...Saturday night!!!!!!!!!!!......so much to say............actually this year has been very good to me. I dont mean as a business, thats been OK also. But I mean the things that Have happened in my life this year...............and that includes becoming a brother to all of you...........the Christmas Party with the 129th/173rd was a night to remember. I would have to say that with Fred Alvis, and Ron Paye and the rest of the 173rd and their 6's.....gosh we probably had 40 people there at 6:30 for the supper. The Herd guys had called me earlier in the week to ask if I could get my Mom and Dad up for the supper. Now.......to know my dad.......who is a mountain of a man , as Fred and Ron has so will depicted in their set rep's of the party, well........you know that they say you can move a mountain. I moved a mountain, my dad, because he came to the party....Dee said I could'nt get him to come and was worried about me being so disappointed when he didn't.....I MOVED A MOUNTAIN........Dad and Mom was a lil' nervous at the start, but after we all honored them as "Honorary Gold Star mom and Dad" of the XVII Chapter of the 173rd Air Borne brigade the ole' man settled down a bits. Him and Mom ate some of the supper and before ya know it Dad was grabbin' WWII Marine Corps Dog Tags out to have me go and show all the guys. His Tags only have 6 numbers on it, and he can rattle them off just like I can mine. Then he had me go out to his car and get his 1800 something Colt 45 that he carries and show all the guys................I only ask him to stay for his usual 25 minutes, but he stayed for an hour and a half!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....he had a tear in his eye when he left.................me and my dad.......long story.......I worked for him, and beside him for 41 years. Started pushin' a broom for him when I was 9..........but we never really got along with each other. Ya know how that goes.......was'nt until I left the joint and went out on my own, we have become best of friends and believe it or not, I can put my arms around him and give him a kiss on the cheek!!!!!!!!!.......yeah!!!!!!!!!all brand new to me!!!!!!!!!!!so I am lovin' it. All those years I would leave his side from work and feel so bad about it all, now I visit him once a week and when I leave I tell him I love him and hug him and the feeling in my heart is such a warm one. Kinda like when I am around one of you all!!!!!!!!!!THE PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!.........I got "happy feet" early and I think I either danced or was on the stage doin' back up vocals with the band the whole night long........ask Ron Paye............BY THE WAY.........OUR ONE AND ONLY MR. RON PAYE WAS THE SENIOR RANKING MILATARY PERSANAL IN THE POP-A-TOP THAT NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!.....Thanks for comin' Ron, and you too Fred......BY THE WAY FRED.......you snuck out with out givin' me a hug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..............The Hred also had Santa come in and gave out some gifts. They gave me one of those hand carved HUEYS. I now have 2 of them and both hang in the Pop-A-Top as if they are either going into, or out of a LZ.....they look great......a great time was had by all...........Spence, of the 173rd promised me that none of the Herd would jump from the bar this year acting like they were pulling their rip cords, WELL, guess who was the one to do it first, YEP....SPENCE;-))))))))))......he jump towards me, as if I would catch him. Cripe, the guy is 6'2" and 280.......like I'm gonna catch him......we both hit the floor and his hat went into my mixed drink dump bucket. You know, the "Spider Mix".anyways...........as the night went on, some of my regular, local patrons came in and boy were they treated to a night of entertainment with the Herd and the 129th.......BTW RON.... I had to buy a new bottle of Scotch today.....you got into to that didnt ya;-)))))))))..had my favorite band there that night......ask Ron...they do not hit a sour note all night long....and besides that, they let me get up and sing and play the harmonica with them......nice guys!!!!!!!!!there is no certain AO of the Pop-A-Top that is a Dance Floor.....when we get a rockin' the whole place dances!!!!!!!!!!!!!.........I got home that night, threw the brief case on the table, and almost had to crawl to bed. I was shot......could hadly move the next day....Damb Happy Feet!!!!!!!!!!!!.......AND GUESS WHAT????????????????????...THE HERD CALLED ME MONDAY AND HAVE ALREADY BOOKED THE DATE OF DECEMBER 6TH OF NEXT YEAR,2003, AS THE DATE FOR THE 129TH/173RD CHRISTAMS PARTY FOR NEXT YEAR. ....TRY AND MAKE IT IF YOU CAN.........ASK RON AND FRED!!!!!!!!!!....in the season that it is.........Dee and I, and all the kids, and dogs, and grandkids, wish each and every one of you the best of times for the season and the best year in your life next year..........you all have made my life an all brand new thing.......each day is a wonderful thing to me because of all of you. I either hear from one of you, or get e-mail from one of you and there is not a word invented that can tell you all what that does to me..........I aint got much money, but I am a rich, blessed man because of our relationships!!!!!!!!!!!!!..I have had the oppertunity to meet many of you in person, and to the ones that I have not met yet, I am sure that the ones I have met, carry the hearts as you all do..........does that make sense???????......does to me.................please be careful out there........have a great season.......................always a brother and sister, cant wait for Alanta next summer................Mark and Dee

Brother Allen, Welcome Home..... Allen do you know or ever hear of a guy named David Winslow? He`s from Winlow,Maine, I served with him in Germany after Nam and the 129th. That`s his real last name Winslow from Winslow, Maine. FLIGHT.... went to Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of NC, for the 99th aniverserary of the Wright Brothers first flight. At 10:35 AM yesterday, 99 fixed wing aircraft flew over the celebration!!!!!! Every kind of fix wing aircraft you could imagine, from vintage WW1 to the Stealth !!!! Really Neat!!!!! Wright Brothers were from Dayton, Ohio......not North Carolina....... The Party sounded great at the Pop-A-Top...... kind of ironic, in 1984 I met a fellow named Elton(Glenn) Vincent from Atlanta in a bar in Columbus, Ohio. Glenn had been with the 173rd at English and Uplift and was very aware of Bulldogs and Cobras. I talk to Glenn a few months ago, he`s retired now and living in Lakeland, Florida. But the 173nd and the 129th was "hangin out" long before the "The Top" connection, that`s real cool.......Lookin forward to gettin home to Ohio for Xmas..... and Ohio State puttin a "whuppin on them Canes".

Ron Paye, Sir, thank you for your tale of the 173rd/129th holiday extravaganza. Sounds like it was great! Bigger and better next year! Mark, thank you for your explanation of all of the items on the POW/MIA Missing Man Table. That ceremony is one, that when done right, and it sounds like it was, brings tears to the eyes of all in attendance. I've been organizing the ceremony for several years and I weep softly every time we do it. We miss our friends and brothers, and the POW/MIA Table Ceremony reminds "them" of that. It's the least we can do for those who gave all. Thank you again, Mark. On another note, Bernie....I saw your memorial to Claud Strother! That was wonderful of you. Tears welled in my eyes. Always, Gently

Thank a Veteran, USA - Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at 06:50:06 (MST)
Flight, I had a busy day, but I must take time to try and tell about the wonderful Christmas party at the Pop-a-Top. Fred, you did a marvelous job of expressing your feelings and thoughts of Saturday night. The Party. WOW-MOM-WOW!!!!! The 173rd had a magnificent party Saturday. You all missed a good one. It will become an annual event and everyone must try and make it next year..... >>>>>To start out the 173 had a special Gold Star presentation for Marks mom and dad. To say it was moving is a major understatement. Fred! you did a great job describing Marks dad. I can see him now, leaning on his cane. And! Yes I can still see the shining in his eye and the grin on his face. He was proud. He was a Combat Veteran, being honored by other combat veterans.Proud, proud, proud. All of our hearts go out to any parent who lost a child. We know it could have been "our" parents. That was special>>>>>> The Missing man table....... We had a flight helmet to honor air crews and a grunt helmet to honor grunts on the small POW/MIA table. Mark did a very moving and difficult explanation of what all the items on the table stood for. I don't think there was a dry eye in the place. Total silence. You could have heard a pin drop. Mark! Hand salute. >>>>>>>>We then were treated to a fabulous meal. All you could eat, and it was excellent>>>>>>>The band...... Mark had a really great Blue's band. They could play any where any place. They had the walls pulsating. I think people came in just to see what the heck was causing all the vibrations in town. The stop lights had to be shaking. They really had the place rocking. Mark and his future son-in-law even treated us by helping the band out with a few numbers. Mark was ""in the grove"" Singing, playing the drums. He was all over the stage. You all should have seen him. Get down, get down Mark. >>>>>> I wish we had a video of Spence dancing on the bar. The only thing funnier was the expressions on the faces of all the civilians watching. It was great. Their mouths open in disbelief and trying to laugh at the same time. Great, great funny moment. To anyone who has not met Spence. You are missing a great one. He is truly one of a kind. A wonderful man. Definitely the life of any party. Every thing was super, great, outstanding. But the thing I will not be able to do justice was the way the 173rd tried to make me feel welcome. I was not 129th and they 173rd. We were one. They really, really, really went out of their way to make me feel like they wanted me there. It was "Love and Brotherhood" pure and simple. I felt as at home with them as I do with the 129th at Kokomo. Family. One thing that always has me in awe, and brings me intense feelings of pride, is the respect we have for one another. Here I am setting at the bar and Spence is telling the civilians next to me how great "air crews" were and how we had such big balls. How we would fly into any LZ, no matter how hot, with nothing but plex glass to stop the bullets. Not to take anything away from you guy's but talk about big balls...if I'm not mistaken...Spence was awarded the Silver Star and here he is talking about how brave air crews were. Talk to air crews and we say its the "Grunts" that had the big ones. We would drop them off and then we were outa there. The Grunts were there for the duration, be it days or weeks. Down in the mud and the blood, slugging it out, eye to eye. Being an old grunt in the Corps I had a special place in my heart for the guys on the ground. They didn't call them "TROOPERS" for nothing. Spence, you da man, I love you brother. In closing...So much more I would like to say but don't know how to put all the emotions into words. Spence, I thank you and the "Herd" for the great time. Mark, Thanks for the Pop-a-Top, great band , and being Mark Jackson, one of the nicest men I have ever met. To the 173rd, I thank you for welcoming me into your special group and making me feel that I belonged. I sincerely look forward to the day we can be together again. I hope it is before Kokomo. Fred, it was good seeing you again. I have a small token from the 173rd for you. Flight, you all have to make it to next years Christmas party. You missed a really great one. This weekend was really what Christmas is all about. Love and Brotherhood. Ron Paye

hello group, I will let ron payne tell of the xmas party,he writes much better than i. mark, was so very nice to meet ur parents, wonder people. The tears runing down ur moms face during the gold star ceremony spoke of the pain, loniness and hurt we have all felt in the insueing years, but to watch a mother..she indeed gave more than all of us, for she gave her son.Your father, so proud, dignified.bent over by years of toil, thick hands, harden by years of hard work holding on to the cane.one could see the pride in his eyes,of Larry, and of you, Mark, my friend. Semper fi Mr.Jackson. semper fi Mark. Airborne, our 173rd brothers. The galss is raised in proud salute to u all and to those who are with us in sprit and memorey. No one sat at the mia table, but yet,the table was crowed with our thouths to those who were at that table.May god bless all,all have a joyous xmas,be at piece my brothers.

ORDERING MILITARY RECORDS: Does everyone know about this? There's now an online way to speed up ordering copies of DD-214s, decorations, making corrections to military records, etc. After filling out and sending the online form, you then need to mail or fax in a signature form, to confirm it (the signature form is the last page of the process). The web site is at: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/

And to those who promised, or who have been thinking about a donation, the pail is not covered, there's still more room...so, come on! It is through giving and helping another Veteran that we are healed. I know you will all come through. Make my listing your checks on my deposit slip a long and painful endeavor. Always there for you-Gently

Some of you may have gotten an email with this poem in it, but for those of you who deserve the recognition that it brings, I thought I'd share it. Maybe some of you didn't "choose" to go to war, but the fact remains that you were there for us, willing to fight for us, enabling us to still be free. God bless...... It reads: T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, AND ON THE WALL PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBERING THOUGHT CAME TO MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT SO DARK AND SO DREARY, THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, NOW I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ: CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND SOON DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD EVENING'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. Sue

December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day........Larry Bird`s Brithday.....and Fred Skaggs 52nd Brithday...Man all hell broke loose down here in Raleigh...Just got our power back after 48 hours without. Ice storm of the century down here. My back yard looks like a bomb hit it, I had (8) 100 feet tall pine trees that are only 65 feet tall now. Lost the 2 trees in the front yard. One of the trees in the back yard, the tip top, hit the ground and inbedded about tree feet straight upside down. Nothing got hit but our brick patio, not much damaged there. The neighbors tree crashed on my chain link , about 20 feet of fence gone. Kim and I are OK and my truck didn`t get hit.....Good Lord was with us. I`ve had enough excitement the last couple of days, so I`ll spend my brithday.....Sober.....for the first time in about 35 years. Besides my arthritis meds will make me sick if I drink with them.

Send your donation to me at: 2228 N. 115th Street, Wauwatosa, WI 53226 and your suggestions to my email address. So far I have $25.00, though there is more promised. I'm not going to ask for your help and contributions too many more times(maybe just once more). I'm going to assume that those of you who can, will. And please make suggestions even if you are unable to financially contribute. The money can be used however "the chosen" wants/needs to use it, though making sure they join us in Atlanta would be a great idea. Please ponder the possibilities your gift could do. In a train carriage there was Bill Clinton, George Bush, Janet Reno and Bo Derek. After several minutes of the trip, the train passes through a dark tunnel and the unmistakable sound of a slap is heard. When they leave the tunnel, Clinton has a big red slap mark on his cheek. (1) Bo Derek thought - "That sleaze ball Clinton wanted to touch me and by mistake, he must have put his hand on Janet Reno, who in turn must have slapped his face." (2) Janet Reno thought - "That dirty Bill Clinton laid his hands on Bo Derek and she smacked him." (3) Bill Clinton thought - "George put his hand on Bo Derek and by mistake she slapped me." (4) George Bush thought - "I hope there's another tunnel soon so I can smack Clinton again."

Gently....I called Max..... A Brother..... you`re a Sister, not a referee....Brother Max....no nukes..... The guy that told me about "the flag" is a Merchant Marine Captain.... Bruce Stephenson.....All-State Ohio football player I grew with, Bruce got a full-ride scholarship to the Merchant Marine Academy, he didn`t see it as a distress signal. I lived in St.Germain (suburb of Paris) and my wife works for Schlumberger ( french oil company), got to know the mind-set of the culture. The " older frenchmen" that you refer to, usually vote communist party in the elections.

Fred: Well, since flying a flag upside down is an international military distress signal, maybe they're trying to tell us something -- again...(grin) I'm just saying let's not lump all Frenchmen together as arrogant, incompetent, s**theads -- let's at least weed out the *good* ones before we nuke 'em...

Do you have any expat friends that live there and talk or e-mail them daily? Would it bother you to see a "american flag" flying upside down in a country, that the United States has "bailed out" more than once? Just Wondering!!!!!!!!!

While we're *French bashing* (and, true, there's plenty to bash) let's keep in mind that the during WWII the French underground was the most active of any of the occupied countries, and many, many American and English *air crewmembers* owe their lives to the risks the underground took to hide downed crewmen. Quite a few of the underground, and sometimes even their families, were executed when caught helping the Allies, and some of those courageous underground members are still alive today, and deserving of our gratitude.

Rick, just to back up what you are saying.......my Dutch Friend Hans, his father was 15 years old, during the occupation of Holland. He worked with the Dutch underground during the war. But during the war, he got down on the French/Belgium border and was captured by the French!!!!!!!! and turned over to the Nazi`s, the Dutch HATE the French. They are rotten SOB`s, if Churchhill and FDR had their way, DeGaulle would have never be a part of the anything. But to this day, Han`s father would say, "The French deserve everything the Nazi`s did to them". That was a strong enough statement for me to take notice. Even in today`s world, most of France`s major companies, at the top is a American running things. As far as technical stuff they hire americans and Swedes and India people to run the show. As far as the medical stuff, yes they found the AIDS virus, but it was brought in to France, in the ass-end of a Frenchmen!!!!!!!!!

I love the hell out of this one.********* From a Marine in Bosnia. (Note the signature) A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel (Bosnia): A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war. He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the support of France. I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface at some point in the near future anyway. That is why France is a third-rate military power with a socialist economy and a bunch of faggots for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever it had to do, and France's support was only for show anyway. Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden, as evidenced by the fact that the French officer was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around. He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and beat his ass in front of the entire Multi-National Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff. With friends like these, who needs enemies? Mary Beth Johnson Lt Col, USMC
